An Outline of Biblical History
The Bible is organized historically for the most part, and biblical history follows a fairly simple outline. Without an appreciation of this, however, it can appear confusing. What follows is a crash course in basic biblical literacy. Top While reading the following general outline of Biblical history, this timeline and this map may be useful. They are Flash files, so right-click and 'Zoom In' to explore. The Bible comes in two parts, called the Old Testament, and the New Testament. A 'testament' just means a very serious agreement (a ' covenant '). As these names suggest there are two major covenants presented in the Bible: first one for Israel, then another for all of humanity — but we'll come back to this in a minute.

At right, the grave of Thomas Meredith , founder of the Biblical Recorder, who is buried in Raleigh.
History of the Biblical Recorder
For more than a century and a half, the Biblical Recorder has recorded Baptist life in North Carolina and around the world. The paper traces its heritage to 1833, when Thomas Meredith founded the state Baptist paper in North Carolina. Meredith, a preacher, writer and denominational statesman, first started printing the paper under the name Baptist Interpreter. The Baptist State Convention, which was founded only a few years earlier, gave its stamp of approval to the publication in 1832. Meredith introduced the Biblical Recorder and Journal of Passing Events in January 1834. A year later, the name was shortened to the Biblical Recorder. Meredith edited the paper from New Bern, where he was pastor of First Baptist Church. In 1838, Meredith and the paper moved to Raleigh, where its offices are still located. Since that time, the paper has been edited in homes, church offices, rented quarters, printing plants and the Baptist Building. The Recorder was owned by individuals, other companies or a group of people who formed a stock company until the Baptist State Convention purchased it in 1938.

The Facts and Fancies of a Biblical Garden
by: Drayton Hastie
According to Genesis, on the first two days God created the earth and its waters, plants on the third day, and then his garden at Eden. Though we are told that he grew "every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food," the exact identities of some of those plants have, over time, become uncertain. Further complicating is that neither those who originally recorded the Bible nor those who subsequently translated it into their native tongues were necessarily interested in horticulture. It has been largely over the past century that horticulturists, who happened also to be Biblical students, began exploring the subject. Question still exists as to variety, species, and even genera of some plants of the scriptures. Thus, some matters may forever be argued, such as whether Eve's "apple" was in fact an apricot; whether the "Rose of Sharon" was neither a rose nor our present Rose of Sharon; whether the "lilies of the field" were narcissus, hyacinths, crocus, anemones, lilies, or a combination; whether the tree from which Judas hung himself was actually the Judas tree, etc. Nonetheless, we do now know items of interest, such as that manna came from drippings of the tamerisk tree, that the "locusts" eaten by John the Baptist were not insects, but pods from the carob tree, that the "bitter herbs" which sustained the Israelites during their 40-year outing were pretty much what we see at our salad bars today, that frankincense and myrrh were horticultural perfumes, that the Holy Land of those days, prior to centuries of man's depredations, was horticulturally a Garden of Eden, and that a great majority of all Biblical plants are now positively identified.
