USOEC Boxing The U.S. Olympic Education Center is home to one of the premier boxing teams in the nation. Established by USA Boxing in 1987, the USOEC team has produced Olympic, world and national champions. In fact, USOEC boxers accounted for a third of the 2000 U.S. Olympic boxing team and half of the boxing medals won at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. However, that’s just part of the story. Located on the campus of Northern Michigan University, USOEC resident athletes live and train in Marquette, Mich., while continuing their education. "The U.S. Olympic Education Center is one of the cornerstones of USA Boxing’s success, not only in the ring, but also in the classroom," said USA Boxing Executive Director Paul Montville. "In addition to the many champions that have come through the USOEC, there have been just as many champions that have earned high school diplomas and college degrees." Under the direction of Coordinator Edward Yoon and 1996 Olympic Head Coach Al Mitchell, the USOEC resident boxing program is a demanding and rewarding program. To be a USOEC boxer, an athlete must be approved by the USA Boxing, the U.S. Olympic Committee and NMU, and must show satisfactory progress, both academically and competitively, to remain in the program.

Message Board Winter Olympic Sports (Snow) There's nothing quite like a really nasty winter storm that shuts down pretty much everything in the city. There are things that are better, but there's nothing quite like it. It's especially good when everything is shut down before noon and you don't work until 2 pm. What a perfect opportunity to kick back and watch the Olympics. Now, although there are only 14 sports at the winter Olympics, I'm pretty sure that I don't want to rate all of them at one time. So I'm splitting the sports up, going first with snow sports. I'll leave the ice sports and track sports to another article or two. A note here, I'm not rating these sports on difficulty or popularity, I'm going with how they are to watch. If you should happen to compete in any of these sports, and I happen to slam it, well, get over it. Snowboarding : I've never been terribly interested in snowboarding, but when I watched it today, I was impressed with how cool it was to watch. Boarders zipping down the halfpipe and getting some insane air while doing tricks all the while. Plus, it's fast without being overly repetitive. Some of the tricks are very impressive, and it looks like a lot of fun, unlike some other sports. That's a

Winter Olympic Sports Organizations To Help Raise Funds For NYC LAKE PLACID, N.Y.-The United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, U.S. Biathlon Association and U.S. Speedskating have joined efforts to raise funds for relief efforts in New York City. Named the Winter Sport Organizations Relief Fund for New York City, the goal is to raise $250 thousand dollars to aid those affected by this tragedy.
"This is the least that we can do for our country," said Steve Sands, executive director of the U.S. Biathlon. "It is an effort that we can all feel good about," Sands said.
Executive Director of the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation Matt Roy said, "After all the assistance that New York State has given amateur sports, the USBSF, U.S. Biathlon and U.S. Speedskating, we are pleased to help in their extreme time of need."
"U.S. Speedskating is pleased to be a part of these tremendous efforts," said Katie Marquard, executive director of U.S. Speedskating. "We believe that sports bring people together and these efforts will continue to bring us together. We are receiving many letters of moral support from other speedskating federations from around the world," Marquard said.
USBSF is communicating with other winter sports organizations and are hoping that they will join USBSF, U.S. Biathlon and U.S. Speedskating in these efforts. USBSF is also planning to ask summer sports organizations, Pan-American Sports Federations, the United States Olympic Committee and affiliated sport organizations to help in relief efforts for NYC.

Bigger than the Super Bowl
The winter biathlon. t the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway, what event drew the largest crowd? Ski-jumping? Downhill or giant slalom? No: the biathlon.
More than 500,000 wildly cheering spectators turned out during the five days of competition, filling the 80,000-seat stadium and spilling over into the woods. Cowbells, I'm told, are the most popular way to cheer on biathletes. In case you're not sure just what sport I'm talking about, the biathlon is a cross-country race where contestants periodically stop to fire .22 rifles at targets 50 meters distant. Winter biathletes use cross-country skis to traverse the course, while the summer competitors are on foot, but the sport is essentially the same. The winner is determined by the fastest time. Accuracy in shooting definitely counts (it's factored in by penalties for misses). In the Winter Olympics, for each miss of a target the biathele must ski an extra 150-yard penalty lap before returning to the course. The biathlon is an intense sport requiring extraordinary skills. After several kilometers of flat-out skiing, shooters unshoulder their bolt-action .22 rifles without optical sights, each of which hold five shots, and take one of two positions to fire. From the standing position, the targets are 3"-diameter metal discs. The prone-position targets are about the size of a half-dollar.

Northern Europeans skied to hunt for food and, later, skied with weapons to defend their countries. The word "biathlon" stems from the Greek word for two contests. Today it is interpreted as a joining of two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. In 1960, Biathlon joined the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM). But in 1993, an agreement was made to retain the Union as an umbrella body under which the UIPM and the IBU could act autonomously. It took effect in 1998, but the two sports maintain relations in various projects. Biathlon consists of eight events in the Olympic program. Men and women compete in a sprint, pursuit, individual and relay. Although all biathlon disciplines combine skiing and marksmanship, the sport features several distinct events. Sprint
During the sprint, women race 7.5km and men race 10km. Competitors stop twice and must hit all five targets with five bullets. For each target missed, athletes take a lap around the 150m penalty loop. The top 60 finishers of this competition qualify for the pursuit.

BIATHLON HISTORY
Biathlon - modern winter sport - represents ski racing with guns on the stated distances and shooting on targets from lying and standing positions at firing borderline.
Specific feature of biathlon consists in complex combination of kinds of sports different in physiological effect on an organism - ski racing and shooting - in one competition
Biathlon appeared as a result of competitions connected with ski racing and shooting held for many years in our country and abroad.
The first competitions in skiing with shooting were held in 1767 in Norway. Among three numbers of the program 2 prizes were intended to skiers, who during the descent from a decline of an average slope will get in the definite target from a gun in the distance of 40-50 steps.
In spite of so early origination biathlon was not spread in other countries. Biathlon development in a modern kind began only in the beginning of XX century.
In 20s-30s militarized skiing competitions were widely spread in the Red Army. Sportsmen went a distance of 50 km overcoming different obstacles.
Later on militarized ski races with guns were changed, becoming closer to sports competitions. So, patrols races appeared, consisting of command race on 30 km with guns and shooting at finish.

    • The early Olympic Games were celebrated as a religious festival from 776 B.C. until 393 A.D., when the games were banned for being a pagan festival (the Olympics celebrated the Greek god Zeus). In 1894, a French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin, proposed a revival of the ancient tradition, and thus the modern-day Olympic Summer Games were born. Host Greece won the most medals (47) at the first Olympic Summer Games in 1896 The first Winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix, France in 1924. Norway has won the most medals (239) at the Winter Games. The United States has won more medals (2,019) at the Summer Games than any other country. every national flag in the world includes one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red. Up until 1986 the Olympics were held every four years. Since then, the Winter and Summer games have alternated every two years. The first Olympics covered by U.S. television was the 1960 Summer Games in Rome by CBS. No country in the Southern Hemisphere has ever hosted a Winter Games.

    • Biathlon is one of the oldest Olympic sports. It can trace its origins to 3000 BC when early hunters used skis to travel across snow and ice. The modern birth of biathlon has military ties because northern European soldiers used cross-country skis to patrol borders. The first-ever biathlon competitions were organized by Norwegian military units. Biathlon appeared as an Olympic demonstration sport four times, but debuted as a full-medal sport in 1960. Women's biathlon was added in 1992.
    Timeline
~3000 BC Early hunters used cross-country skis to travel across snow and ice while hunting with bow and arrow. 1700 AD Cross-country soldiers were used in the Great Scandinavian War that lasted until 1718. The first recorded biathlon race was organized by Norwegian soldiers. The first rifle and ski club was founded to assist in the development of military ski patrols. Biathlon was held as a demonstration sport under the name "military patrol" at the Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, France. The renamed event "biathlon" first appeared as an official International Olympic Committee sport.
