TraveLearn Cybertravel News Belize - Volume 35 Belize Trivia
Scientists believe that at one time the Maya, the first settlers in what is now called Belize, numbered about a million. The earliest known community in the Maya world was at Cuello, in Belize’s Orange Walk District, dating to 2000 B.C. Like Costa Rica where more than 95% of the population is literate, Belizeans have put a top priority on education. Schools are available throughout the country, and today more than 90% of Belizeans are literate. School is mandatory for Belizean children up to the age of 14. Avid readers from the U.S. and Canada are in luck in Belize. Because the official language is English, you’ll seldom have a hard time finding English-language books; however, don’t expect a huge selection of best-sellers. Belize Book Selections
Yesterday and Today - These book selections reflect TraveLearn's tour philosophy of exploring, explaining, and teaching - not only about ancient traditions and cultures, but also providing insights into contemporary local customs and the current social and political situations in various destinations. Belize Yesterday and Today A Forest of Kings: The Untold Story of the Ancient Maya , by Linda Schele, David Freidel (contributor), 1992 and available through amazon.com. The authors bring the Maya to life through their work reading and translating the ancient pictographs of this ancient people. They piece together stories from artifacts, stelae, and buildings from a number of Mayan sites, including Uaxactun, Tikal, and Chichen Itza. There are detailed explanations of Mayan cosmology and an explanation of the calendar reputed to be the most accurate ever invented. Interesting and at times speculative, this book is rich with the flavor and color of the Mayan aristocracy of times gone by. A must read for anyone interested in the Maya and planning a trip to Belize.

TraveLearn Cybertravel News Belize - Volume 19 Belize Trivia
Belize, a sliver of land between Mexico and Guatemala and no bigger than the state of Massachusetts, doesn't take up much space but it has a range of scenery, wildlife, cultural traditions, and archaeological remains that would do justice to an entire continent. The largest flying bird, the jabiru stork, in the Western Hemisphere can be found in Belize. It reaches human proportions, growing as tall as five feet with an astounding wing span of up to ten feet. Unfortunately, it is greatly endangered, with fewer than 300 birds thought to still be alive. Peaceful, democratic, English-speaking Belize seems in many ways not to belong in Central America at all. Indeed, it is more a Caribbean nation than a Latin one; however like most Central American countries it has a rich blend of cultures and races that include, in a very tiny population, Maya, Mestiza, African, European, and, most recently, Chinese and others. Click Here GEOGRAPHY The cayes (pronouced keys), the offshore atolls, and the barrier reef are the main attraction to Belize. The barrier reef, which is 185 miles long, is the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. The cayes are islands and/or mangroves, that are located between the mainland and the barrier reef, on the barrier reef, and on or within the barrier reef perimeters of the offshore atolls. Although the mangrove cayes are normally uninhabitable by humans, they do provide a superior habitat for birds and marine life. Many birds, fish, shellfish, and marine organisms begin their lives within the protection of the mangrove. On the other hand, the island cayes, which are distinguishable by their palm trees, have provided the foundation for the development of many fine resorts to serve the water sports enthusiasts and the marine naturalists. the cayes and atolls provide superior opportunity for SCUBA diving, snorkeling, fishing, boating, sailing, sailboarding, and sea kayaking, as well as habitat for both nesting birds and turtles. The northern half of the mainland of Belize is a plain that was once the bed of a sea. The land is covered with a thin layer of soil, that supports scrub vegetation and dense hardwood tropical forest. The coastal area is neither land nor sea, but a sodden, swampy transition between the two. It consists of mangrove and grasses, and it is bordered by tussock grasses, cypress, and sycamore where the land separates the water.

Belize has recognized its pristine forests, rivers, and oceans as valuable assets, and has placed 35% of its land under protection. With a wealth of biodiversity within a small area, Volunteers inevitably find the natural beauty of Belize a positive aspect of their service. The longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, along with numerous small islands, stretch along the coast, providing a home for species of fish, coral and other marine life. Within Belize are a plethora of environments-including mangroves, tropical forest, pine forest, rivers, and caves. From the mountains to the coast, in Belize one will find a fascinating array of native animals, and the country is a prime destination for birdwatchers.
    Economy and Government
Belize is a stable, democratic country. There are two major political parties, which have traded power back and forth over the years. The Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet are elected officials who are surprisingly accessible to the people. In fact, it is not uncommon to meet government leaders in their local towns going about activities.
Belize has a relatively high average yearly income, however, that is coupled with a very high cost of living. Because there is little domestic manufacturing, most of the products sold in Belize are imported. Belize's main exports are agricultural-citrus, sugar, and bananas-making them highly susceptible to market fluctuations.
