A recent Harvard graduate, she had spent several months in Borneo tracking orangutans. It was hot, sticky, and she was fighting boredom as she watched one of the rare orange-furred apes stuff herself with fruit in the rainforest canopy above. Then she heard heavy breathing from a dead tree trunk, and looked down in surprise. "At first, I thought the noise was bees," she says. That's when a furry black missile landed on her backpack and "knocked me to the ground as I turned to run," Ms. Johnson says. "It gashed my leg with its claws, and after I shouted and kicked, it took off. "I'm really lucky," she says, rolling back her pant leg to show a still-red scar more than 16-months after the January 2000 attack. Johnson, an assistant on a long-term orangutan study, ruefully laughs at her encounter with a sun bear, the muppetlike smallest member of the ursine family. Yet the attack, in Gunung Palung National Park, was the start of a disturbing trend: There have been four more since then, after 16 years without a single incident.

The gestation period for six births at the East Berlin Zoo was reported to be 95 to 96 days, suggesting t here was no delayed implantation. Conversely, three pregnancies at the zoo in Fort Worth, Texas, lasted 174 to 240 days, suggesting delayed implantation. Litters consisted of either one or two cubs, weighing about 325 grams (10 ounces) each. Cubs are reported to remain with their mothers until they are fully grown.

Unlike hundreds of other MSU students, the finance junior isn't tanning to avoid future sunburn, she's doing it to look good. "I'm not doing it so I won't get burned. I'm doing it so I'll look tan and can wear shorts," Milz said. But what many students aren't aware of is the future risks associated with artificial tanning. James Herman, medical director at Sparrow Health System's Regional Cancer Center, said 400,000 cases of cancer are reported every year in the United States "Farmers, sailors and sun-worshipers are more prone to having skin cancer. (But) the bottom line is that you should not be tanning for the purposes of tanning," Herman said. As an alternative to tanning, he said students should look into cosmetics. Self-tanners will bronze skin and these products - along with sun block - do the same thing as tanning booths without the risk of cancer. In the meantime, local tanning parlors are witnessing a rise in bookings as students rush to achieve a golden sheen before spring break.

It is found in the lowland tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Its coat is made of short, sleek, black hairs. It bears a golden- or white-colored crescent shape on its chest and the same coloring also around its eyes. Sun bears are omnivorous: They eat everything from the tips of palm trees to birds, termites, and bees' nests. Because sun bears are rare in the wild, little information is available about their behavior or their current numbers in the wild. Sun bears originally inhabited Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India. They are now believed extinct in India and possibly in Bangladesh. Habitat loss is the primary threat to the sun bear. A burgeoning human population in southeast China, for example, results in the destruction and fragmentation of previously wild areas. No population estimate has been determined for the sun bear, but scientists are certain that its numbers are steadily declining due to habitat loss and poaching. Sun bears are also threatened by a growing trade in bears and bear parts. Sun bears are killed for food and fur and trapped for sale as pets. They are also increasingly killed for their gall bladders, an important ingredient in traditional Asian medicines. The species is protected under Appendix I of CITES.
