Sun bears get their name from:
their diurnal (day-time active) nature, unusual to the bear family
their tropical and sub-tropical habitat in southeast Asia
the whitish or orange crescent-shaped markings on their chest fur, reminiscent of a rising sun
their endearing ('sunny') dispositions
Honolulu Zoo's Malayan Sun Bear page

What makes this zoo's sun bear page a little more interesting than most is that it has a good picture gallery, showing the zoo's sun bears taking part in their enrichment program. In addition to the gallery, though, there are also the staple stats found on other pages, such as physical characteristics, behaviour, and diet. And there's even a bio on Ken and Jun, the two bears at the zoo.

Getting 10 sun bears from Malaysian Borneo to various zoos in the United States may have been a huge amount of work on the part of researchers, but it seems that the bears are having few problems adjusting to life in America. Too smart to go back to the wild Sun bears that have spent their early years around humans as pets have a pretty difficult time transitioning back to a life in the wild. They've become used to "the good life" and find that nature can even be fatal.

As part of a massive product launch, Sun has unveiled new storage systems designed by Dot Hill The partnership between storage specialist Dot Hill and Sun Microsystems moved another step forward this week with the release of two new storage systems from Sun. Sun released its StorEdge 3510 FC and 3310 NAS storage systems during a massive product launch on Monday. The systems sport the Sun logo but were actually designed by Dot Hill as part of an agreement that began in 2002. The first fruit of the partnership was the StorEdge 3310 SCSI, a product that lacks the Ethernet network connection abilities of the 3310 NAS. The 3510 is the same size as the 3310 a 3.5-inch-thick rack-mountable system but can connect to special-purpose storage networks using the Fibre Channel technology. The system has eight Fibre Channel ports. Under the partnership Sun also will sell a 1.75-inch-thick system later this year, said Dot Hill spokeswoman Helene Dashefsky. Sun also uses some of Dot Hill's management software. Sun has a long history of partnering with other companies in the storage market, but its products haven't always fared well. In addition to the partnership with Dot Hill for lower-end storage systems, Sun relies on a deal with Hitachi Data Systems for its top-end products.

Scientific name: Helarctos malayanus Photo credited to The Bear Den Habitat : All elevations of dense tropical and subtropical forests
Height : Adult length: 3.5-4.5 feet (1.1-1.4 m) Adult height: 28 inches (72 cm)
Weight:
Males 60-143 pounds (27-65 kg)
Males are 10-20% heavier than females Life Span : Life span in the wild is unknown; up to 28 years in zoos
Diet: In the wild: Sun bears eat predominantly fruit, honey, insects and their larvae, small rodents, lizards, birds, earthworms, green vegetation and roots. Sun bears also relish the growing tips of coconut palms grown on plantations. This kills the palms and leads to sun bears being shot by plantation owners. At the zoo: Omnivore biscuits, a variety of fruits, vegetables, insects and honey (ocassionally fish). Photo credited to the Oregon Zoo Reproduction: Little is known about the breeding activity of sun bears. They have been observed breeding at all times during the year, which suggests they have no regular breeding season. Females first mate at about 3 years of age. The mating period lasts from two days to a week, during which time a mating pair will engage in behavior such as hugging, mock fighting and head bobbing. The sun bear gestation period is approximately 95 days. Sun bears have been observed giving birth to one or two cubs in both ground and tree nests. Average birth weight is 10.5-12 ounces (300-400 g).

Local peoples refer to it as the "dog bear" They can weigh between 60 and 145 pounds with the males being slightly larger. The claws are long, curved and very pointed. Range: They are found in southeast Asia; India, Burma, southern China, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Habitat: Sun bears prefer lowland tropical rain forests. They are quite arboreal and are believed to sleep in trees. Gone Fishin'
The bears we know today actually have as their ancestors bears that have been evolving for some 40 million years. Fossils of the earliest "true bear", Ursavus elemensis, have been found from the Mioncene Epoch in what was then sub-tropical Europe, and show a small dog-size animal with characteristics that show a blending of dog and bear traits. It is believed that all modern bears stem from Ursavus elemensis. Two important primitive bears that should be mentioned are Arctodus simus, the giant short faced bear, and Ursus speleaus, the European cave bear. The giant short faced bear is the largest land carnivore that ever lived. It had extremely long legs, sharp claws and a reach of over 14 feet tall. It is believed that this ancient giant is related to today's small-sized spectacled bear. The cave bear, while feared and worshipped by Neanderthal culture, was actually a herbivore by nature. Cave bears survived two ice ages but were eventually became extinct, leaving a wealth of fossils that helped excite the early paleontologists of the 19th century. From the ancient cave bears evolved the brown bear, Ursus arctos, the American black bear, Ursus americanus and the Asiatic black bear, Selenarctos thibetanus. And from the brown bear evolved the newest species of bear (only 20,000 years old) the polar bear, Ursus maritimus.

Also known as "honey bears," these bears live in southeast Asian tropical rain forests and eat fruit, honey, insects, and small vertebrates. Sun bears are named for the crescent-shaped marking of orange-yellow fur on their chests, which according to legend represents the rising sun. Although smaller than other bears, sun bears are among the most dangerous animals in the Asian jungles. However, due to poaching and hunting, they are also the most endangered of all bear species. Comments about the Sun bear of the Fort Worth Zoo Personal Observations The skin of the bear is covered with a black coat made of sleek, short hair. It has a white or yellowish patch on its chest shaped like half moon and a muzzle that is yellowed and shorter than that of the black bear. In fact the claws of the Malayan sun bear is approximately six inches and are curved with hairless soles that serves as an adaptive measure to help the bear in climbing trees. At the Zoo, the bear was very friendly and playful. Don't be deceived by this reaction of the sun bear and think that they are not dangerous. From upon visiting the Zoo, I was told that these animals, in the wild are very dangerous and indeed fearful.

PHOENIXChange tends to come slowly in the NFL. That's why Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Rich McKay, the co-chairman of the league's competition committee, doubts a proposed change to overtime will be passed at the league's annual meetings, which begin Monday in Phoenix. But McKay said he thinks there soon will come a day when success in overtime has less to do with flipping a coin, and he said the vote on a proposal to ensure both teams have the ball in overtime is "going to be close.''

Talya Arbisser Working overtime. Junior Briana Jentner and the women’s hockey team split a pair of games in Maine this weekend. The icers needed overtime to decide both games.
    By JONATHAN AUERBACH
The women's hockey team notched its second win of the season this weekend, as it split with Maine in Orono. The Red (2-14-1, 0-7-1 ECAC) dropped Friday's contest 2-1 in overtime, as Maine scored the game-tying goal with 14 seconds left. The Black Bears (7-11-4, 1-5-2 Hockey East) gave up the lead on Saturday, as the icers lit the lamp with 14 seconds left in the game, and came away with the 3-2 win in the extra frame.
"I thought we had a good growing weekend. The first game, we had a lot of chances to put them away, but we didn't early, and they came back and capitalized late in the game, and then took the game from us in overtime," commented head coach Melody Davidson.
Senior Sanya Sandahl started in goal for the Red, and held Maine scoreless until the last seconds of the game. Senior Lindsay Murao had a great scoring opportunity in the first on a 2-on-1, but hit the crossbar on an open shot.
