NATURE's "The Polar Bears of Churchill with Ewan McGregor" finds the actor in a remote Canadian outpost on Hudson Bay, where he investigates the annual invasion of hungry polar bears that threaten to raise havoc in their haste to get out on the newly frozen ice and hunt for seals.
Churchill, in the Canadian province of Manitoba, occupies a spit of land that provides the fastest access onto the ice, and the bears are in no mood for any detours once the waters of Hudson Bay begin to freeze. So they congregate near the town and prowl the landscape for appetizers before the main course becomes accessible. Ewan McGregor puts himself in the middle of the action as town and wildlife authorities skillfully cope with both the would-be marauders of the furry variety, and the throngs of tourists who descend upon the town to see the bears, often at considerable risk to themselves.
Along with McGregor, viewers get a close-up look at how polar bears that wander into town are sedated, carted off to polar bear "jail," and eventually hoisted by helicopter onto the frozen bay. It's a dramatic reversal from years ago, when bears invading human space often were shot, sometimes after lethal encounters with people.

Photo courtsey Roger Birkel, The Baltimore Zoo. Polar Bear Scientific Name: Ursus maritimus Home: All around the North Pole on sea ice, islands, and coasts Description: White-furred, long-legged, huge, one-ton bear Polar bears are the biggest carnivores on land! They're twice as big as a tiger, and the ultimate polar predators. Hunting alone for anything from seals to large fish, or scavenging for dead whale or walrus, the polar bear uses a sense of smell 100 times better than ours. A clever polar bear technique for catching a seal requires long hours by a break in the ice, waiting for the seal to come up for air so he can grab it. Polar bears can run at speeds close to 40 mph . Some polar bears never step on land, though, and move from one ice floe to another. Even though they are amazing swimmers, with water-repellent coats and partially webbed paws, the bears prefer to use chunks of ice as rafts to get around! The cold, windy, and ice-covered terrain of the Arctic is a polar bear paradise! Polar bears hiss like cats when they're mad!

Dominant males may succeed in breeding with several females in a season. Polar bears may have many different mates over their lifetime. But sometimes they have to fight for them. The basics Scientific Classification Order: Carnivora. This includes bears, dogs, cats, raccoons, otters, weasels, and their relatives. Family: Ursidae, which is divided into three subfamilies, Ursinae (black bears, brown bears, polar bears, sloth bears, and sun bears), Tremarctinae (spectacled bears), and Ailuropodinae (giant pandas). Population The world polar bear population is estimated to be between 21,000 and 28,000 individuals. Due to governmental regulations on hunting, the population has increased from an estimated 10,000 polar bears in 1968. The ratio of males to females is approximately one to one. How big are they? Polar bears are the largest land carnivore. Male polar bears (boars) grow two to three times the size of female polar bears (sows). Boars weigh about 772-1,433 pounds and are 8.2-9.8 feet long.

    POLAR BEAR
    Ursus maritimus
The polar bear is found throughout the circumpolar Arctic. Polar bears inhabit Arctic sea ice, water, islands, and continental coastlines. Polar bears are among the largest land carnivores. Adult male polar bears, called boars, weigh from 350 to 650 kg (772-1,433 lb.) and are about 2.5 to 3 m (8.2-9.8 ft.) long. Adult female bears, called sows, weigh from 150 to 250 kg (331-551 lb.) and are 2 to 2.5 m (6.6-8.2 ft.) long. Adult polar bears need an average of 2 kg (4.4 lb.) of fat per day to maintain their weight. Their diet includes seals, walruses, whales, fish, and vegetation. Polar bears are strong swimmers, paddling dog-style with their front paws while holding their hind feet and legs flat like rudders. Scientists have tracked polar bears swimming continuously for 100 km (62 mi.). Polar bear cubs are born in a den from November through January. At birth, cubs weigh about 454 to 680 g (16-24 oz.) and are about 30 cm (12 in.) long. They are born helpless with their eyes closed, and appear hairless because of their very fine fur. Cubs open their eyes within the first month, and begin walking at two months. Cubs emerge from the den when they are four to six months old. By eight months, they weigh more than 45 kg (99 lb.). Polar bears at zoological parks provide opportunities for the public to learn about these animals and how human activities may impact their survival. Scientists and specialists study polar bear biology, including polar bear reproduction, birth and care of young, and communication.

    The Shrinking Polar Bears
Our story concerns an animal that is closely associated with this country, pride of the north; the polar bear. Now they certainly capture the imagination of many people around the world. We look at what science has to say about one set of polar bears, those living near Churchill, Manitoba, on and off the shores of Hudson Bay. Scientist Ian Stirling believes they are sending a signal from the eco-system. And as he studies their declining weight and falling birth rate, he worries something may be very wrong. The Magazine's Eve Savory takes us to "The Shrinking Bears" of Hudson Bay. They call helicopter pilot Steve Miller the "Eagle" for his acute vision. His passenger, Ian Stirling, calls Miller's ability to anticipate bear behavior, "Eagle magic". Stirling is one of the world's top authorities on polar bears. Steve Miller For 18 years "the Eagle" has maneuvered Ian Stirling and his tranquillizing dart rifle to a perfect shooting position four to five metres above the ground. "I think we're going to have to jabpole the first two with a little bit in the neck," Stirling says. "Oh yeah, the third one is down as well, that's good"

    Description
Only recently in evolutionary time have bears adapted to life on arctic seas, but these great creatures have mastered the water and ice environment superbly. Over time they evolved a luxuriant white coat and layer of blubber for camouflage and warmth. Oversize feet serve as paddles for extensive swimming and spread their weight, helping this largest of modern carnivores (excepting Orcas ) to traverse ice too thin to support a person.
    Evolution
During the Ice Age, seals adapted to life in icy northern seas. Their need to breathe and reproduce at the surface put a rich year-around food resource within reach of a population of brown bears that began to live more and more out on the ice. Natural selection favored those bears best able to catch seals, and they became more thoroughly carnivorous than other bears. By 100,000 years ago they had evolved into something like the polar bear of today. Although polar and brown bears now look and act rather differently, their genetic closeness is demonstrated by matings in zoos that produce fertile offspring.

Temperature controls every physical and chemical aspect of ice, including the availability of light. The most notable effect of decreasing temperature, as winter progresses and the ice solidifies, is the reduction of pore space within the ice, and the concurrent increase in the salinity of the brine. Sea ice serves as habitat for an ice-specific food web ( sympagic foodweb ] that includes bacteria, viruses

Fax: 202-682-1331 STATUS: Not federally listed as endangered or threatened. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Polar Bear Specialist Group lists most populations as "stable." DESCRIPTION: The polar bear rivals the Kodiak bear as the largest four-footed carnivore on Earth and can live up to 25 years. Although the polar bear’s coat appears white, each individual hair is actually a clear hollow tube that channels the sun’s energy directly to the bear’s skin and helps it stay warm. The polar bear’s entire body is furred, even the bottom of its paws. That helps prevent bears from slipping on the ice. The polar bear is classified as a marine mammal. Its feet are partially webbed for swimming, and its fur is water-repellent. A formidable predator, it has extremely sharp claws. SIZE: Males are 8 to 11 feet long and weigh 500 to 1,100 pounds but can reach as much as 1,500 pounds. Females are smaller, measuring 6 to 8 feet long, and weigh from 350 to 600 pounds, occasionally reaching 700 pounds. POPULATION: Worldwide there are thought to be 22,000-27,000 polar bears in 19 separate populations. They can be found in the United States, Canada, Russia, Greenland and on the Arctic islands of Norway. There are estimated to be about 3,000 to 5,000 polar bears in Alaska.

The Polar Bear is from the Arctic area of the world... very cold! The blubber on his body helps to keep him warm. His white hair color, is actually transparent. The color helps him to blend in with the snow, making him hard to see. The polar bear's skin is dark and draws in the heat from the sun. The polar bear usually walks hundreds of miles every day... this is one reason why you see them pace while in the zoo. For this reason, some say it is not good to keep the polar bears in captivity. One of the favorite meals of the polar bear is seals (pictured below). They will sit near an air hole, and wait until the seal comes up for air. They have also been seen eating Beluga white whales (pictured below). The polar bear's front paws are webbed, making them strong swimmers. They have been known to swim for 60 miles without stopping to rest.
