OTHER BUILDINGS IN TIXALL TIXALL MEWS - Grade II:- The early 19th century stables for the Georgian Hall at Tixall, built by Thomas Clifford. They are built of local sandstone with mullioned windows and a slate roof. In 1833 they were described as lately built of stone at great expense, forming a crescent behind, and at a short and convenient distance from the house. The centre is two storeyed, embattled and with a Gothic portico. It originally served as the coach house for 10 carriages and has vaulted cellars. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The center piece of farm operations, the barn evolved out of a need for animal shelter, grain and feed storage, and machinery protection. The Barns exhibit highlights architectural styles and different functions of barns in North Dakota. Though time and weather have reduced their numbers, North Dakota's barns offer lofty profiles that are testaments to pioneer fortitude, ethnic settlement, national trends, and agricultural reform. During the settlement period of single crop farming, barn architecture was dominated by the large implement sheds and massive barns that housed the animals and equipment necessary to harvest wheat. As the state's agricultural base began to diversify after the turn of the century, a number of new barn types emerged to address the particular needs of animals and crops. The introduction of dimension or pre-cut lumber revolutionized the building industry. The increase in rail lines into sparsely wooded states like North Dakota made pre-cut lumber an attractive building material.

(Jan. 8, 2003) – Obsolete pesticides left and forgotten in unused barns and other farm buildings can pose a danger to cattle and other livestock. If some of these old chemical products are ingested, cattle can get sick or even die. “We’ve had instances this year in Kentucky where cattle have died after finding an old bag of pesticide or a spill, and then eating the contents or licking the soil,” said Roy Smith, veterinary toxicologist for the University of Kentucky Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center. The odor or taste of some products can be attractive to animals. Ingestion of just a small amount could, depending on the toxin, have a significant effect on the animal. Smith said this could lead to a substantial economic loss for the farmer. “Even if the animal just gets sick, there are certain toxins that would prevent it from being sold for several months,” Smith said. “For example, if you get a chlorinated hydrocarbon in an animal there are laws about the levels you can have in it. So if you’ve got an animal at market weight and then have to go on feeding it for another six months, that’s a fairly expensive proposition.”

"During the Progressive era, college agricultural experiment stations across the country promulgated scientific agriculture, or 'book farming,'" explains Peggy Beedle, a landscape historian and author of the publication. "In Wisconsin, this movement focused on the development of an efficient method of storing winter fodder for the burgeoning dairy industry. Silos were the result," Beedle continued. Silos allowed farmers to engage in year-round dairying, laying the groundwork for the state's thriving dairy industry. "Wisconsin has more silos than any other state, and they can rightly be viewed as symbols of the dairy industry's development," Beedle added. "These structures chronicle the geographic range of Wisconsin dairying and graphically illustrate the changes in farm buildings over the years, serving as markers of the state's cultural heritage," she said. President's Barn Cattle Barns Horse Barns Judging Pavilions ... Dairy Barns First Cattle Barn, 1860-1928. The original Iowa State barn was built in 1860, along with the Farm House, as the first two buildings on the new campus following establishment of the College and Model Farm site. These structures were razed in the Fall of 1928 or Spring of 1929. A new cattle barn (described below as the Beef Barn) had been constructed in 1924-25. Cattle Barn (Beef Barn), 1924-1980s. The building came to be known as the Beef Barn but was designated in University documents only as Cattle Barn. The cattle barns in use at the time were known as Old and New Cattle Barns both of which were razed about three years after this barn was completed. Previous cattle barns housed both beef and dairy cattle; however, the new Dairy Barn was completed on Mortensen Road in 1908 and the dairy animals relocated at that time. Records do not reveal whether the barn ever served as a site for dairy production. However, the west wing did contain a number of stanchions of a type that could be used for milking. These stalls and stanchions were used for many years for Holstein nurse cows for steers being fitted in the Beef Barn for exhibition at the International Livestock Show in Chicago. Three International grand champion steers were developed in the facility. The Cattle Barn was generally known over the years as the Beef Barn. George Edwards, long-time herdsman, and students developed three International Grand Champion steers here.

Alga (Algie) Shivers: a Builder of Round Barns Home In 1880, Thomas married Millie Revels. Alga recalled to a reporter for the Ocooch Mountain News (October 1977) the background of his mother: "Her daddy was a full blooded Irishman and her mother an Indian." Thomas and Millie had six children: two daughters, Cora and Middie, and four sons, Herbert, Alga, Edward, and Marvin. By 1900, Thomas had purchased the 60 acres from his Uncle Edmund and an adjacent 200-acre farm in the Town of Forest from Samuel Bass. Thomas was an innovative farmer, who, because of his interest in new technology, was the first in his area to purchase a tractor (in 1917), to install a hot and cold water system in his house (in 1919), and to use an electric generator system (in 1920). Thomas actively directed the operation of his farm until his retirement in 1945 at the age of 88 years. On the occasion of his death in 1959 at age of 101, the Hillsboro Sentry Enterprise wrote:"…the community mourns the loss of an esteemed pioneer whose leadership and kindly assistance had brought new confidence, new opportunity to many people…Those who knew him best will always remember his pleasant personality, his devotion to his family, his loyalty in friendship, and his excellence as a neighbor." Alga (Algie) Shivers took over the family farm along County P east of Valley from his father. Alga was born in 1889 and grew up on his parents’ farm. He attended George R. Smith College in Sedalia, Missouri where he studied carpentry among other subjects, and played second base on their baseball team. While in college, he was called into the army to fight in World War I. His step-granddaughter, Genevieve Roberts Reko, recalls that he was stationed in France where he drove a motorcycle and hauled the generals and the officers around. "He told us that a couple of times the motorcycle was shot out from under him," she added.
