rkeolog från Vilnius, Litauen, född 1963. Avslutade sin akademiska grundutbildning 1990 vid Vilnius universitet med diplomarbetet "Crafts in Mediaeval Lithuania. Bone and Antler Works in the Kernave Hillfort, 13th - 14th century".
H an medverkar även i två andra projekt, förutom "Kulturkrock eller kompromiss?". Dessa är "Environmental and cultural history in the Baltic region" som leds av professor U. Miller vid Stockholms universitet. Och projektet "The culture of the inhabitants of Lithuania in the 11th - 17th centuries AD" lett av Dr G. Zabiella vid Insitutet för Litauens historia.

Dendrochronology
by Peter Ian Kuniholm This article was one of several companion reports that appeared together in the American Journal of Archaeology under the title "Science in Archaeology: A Review" ( AJA ). These reports were designed to bring Classical archaeologists up to speed on the latest developments in the various disciplines of archaeometry.
Abstract
Over 6000 years of tree-ring chronologies covering much of the period back to about 7500 B.C. have been developed over the past 20 years for the Aegean, the Balkans, and the Near East. The goal is to have an unbroken chronology from the present to the Neolithic against which archaeologists, art historians, and anthropologists may date finds of wood or charcoal with a theoretically possible precision of one year.
Method
] Wood or charcoal samples taken from standing buildings or excavated from archaeological sites can be crossdated with each other and with wood from living trees to extend the tree-ring chronology beyond the date of the oldest ring of the oldest living tree in the region. Dendrochronology is the only archaeometric technique where determination of absolute dates accurate to the year is either theoretically or practically possible. For a thorough treatment of recent progress in dendrochronological and dendroclimatological work world-wide see F. H. Schweingruber, Tree Rings: Basics and Applications of Dendrochronology (Dordrecht and Boston 1988).

the cultural development of the baltic region in general, and the south baltic inparticular comparatively large resources for environmental archaeology.
http://internetserver.kalmarlansmuseum.se/arkeologi/summaries_in_english.htm
Summary in English By Gert Magnusson Ph D Construction of the new E22 highway between Hossmo and Söderåkra will affect a number of ancient monuments. The county administrative board has authorised the excavation of around 30 of these remains. The effect of this decision is that The County Museum of Kalmar is presently involved in the most extensive archaeological fieldwork conducted in the county since the construction of the Öland Bridge in the early 1970s The museum has produced a comprehensive project program: A road through time and space . For each ancient monument a plan of investigation has been written, describing how it is to be excavated. The project program consists of seven subprograms: The Mesolithic, The Neolithic, The Bronze Age, The Early Iron Age, The Late Iron Age and Middle Ages, Settlement Structure and Iron Production. In addition, there are three support programs: Human Geography, the Natural Landscape and DNA-studies. Important for the understanding of the cultural development are various "institutions" that can be uncovered and shown in relation to the societies in which they existed, and how they interacted with each other. Examples of these institutions are the church, a medieval manor in Hossmo, simple Iron Age dwellings or the organisation of a district in terms of settlement structure or burial grounds. Various legal rights, identifiable by physical remains in the landscape, are naturally included, such as mill embankments, fishing constructions, fields etc. With an archaeological emphasis and a cultural-historical viewpoint, we make use of the variables landscape, production, settlement and social organisation in a long-term perspective.

Thor Heyerdahl, the late Norwegian explorer of Kon-Tiki, Ra and Tigris fame and perhaps the best-known Norwegian of the second half of the twentieth century, was the founder of the Joint Azov Archaeological Excavation project that started in 2001. That year, he assembled a team of Russian archaeologists and specialists from the Institute of Archaeology at the State University of Rostov-on-Don and the Azov Regional Museum under the leadership of Professor Sergey Lukiashko. Dr. Heyerdahl also brought a team of Western archaeologists from Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, led by Dr. J Bjørnar Storfjell.
Early in the planning stages for the second season of excavation, Dr. Heyerdahl had applied for a grant from the Open Russia Foundation to fund the co-operative research project. Thanks to their generous grant to the Thor Heyerdahl Research Centre, the Open Russia Foundation enabled the archaeological team to continue their investigation into the cultural history of this small city whose name appeared to be mentioned in Old Norse sagas. Many burial mounds have been excavated in Southern Russia, but only a very limited number of settlement sites. As a result of receiving funding for this project, a group of archaeologists and other specialists was able to assemble on 21 May 2002 in the far south of Russia, on the left bank of the River Don less than ten kilometres from the Azov Sea for the second time in two years.

EAA98 - Session on Aerial Archaeology
Göteborg, Thursday, 24 September 1998, 1430 - 1900 by Robert Bewley
The European Association of Archaeologists is a new but growing body of archaeologists whose interests cover the academic and professional side of European archaeology. The conference aims to bring these two important elements of the discipline together.
Robert Bewley (RCHME)was asked by the conference organisers to run a session on aerial archaeology. At the EAA conference in Latvia in 1996 there had been a general session on reports of aerial surveys in Europe so for 1998 a specific theme, 'Heritage Management', was chosen.
The abstracts which follow did, in the main, keep to this theme. The topic was chosen because of the number of senior ("suited") archaeologists present at the conference and who are in a position to promote more aerial survey in Europe.
Aerial archaeology has been expanding at a steady rate since 1945 but the last decade has seen an exponential rise in the quantity, quality and range of reconnaissance, mapping and interpretation.
As a sub-discipline of archaeology it needs to explore the philosophical and ideological concepts which underpin its approach.

Grand Prix for Disturbing Documentary from Cambodia
Tyres are working their way through metres deep clay. The jungle seems to be everywhere but on the small dirt road. The whole scene is in pitch-darkness as if the jungle tries to cover up its treasures.
After many hours the expedition arrives at century-old ruins of a former Khmer palace near the border between Thailand and Cambodia. The magnificent artefacts and treasures, however, are lost for good: Either destroyed by fighters of the Khmer Rouge ("Red Khmer") or looted by thieves who sell them to scrupulous collectors. The walls are collapsed and statues can be found decapitated.
French director Pierre Stine links Cambodia's past and present in his deeply distressing documentary For this achievement he was given the CINARCHEA 2002 Grand Prix by the unanimous decision of the jury.
CINARCHEA Jury President, Dr. Erwin Keefer ( ) said that "The authentic pictures of a tough archaeologist who is shocked and burst into tears due to the severe damage tell us more about our relationship and dealing with traces from the past than any other report produced in a studio."
"Amore Morte" - poetical archaeology
Also with an unanimous vote the Italian director Adolfo Conti was awarded the Special Prize of the Jury . With his poetical, highly artistic and yet very easy and melancholic film Conti brings to life the history of Pompeii. "Amore Morte" is told by the words of Plinius the younger and the wonderful frescos of the local brothel.

My thesis deals with the early history of the Finnish mammalian fauna, and is based on subfossil bone remains found in Finland. The material consists mainly of so called refuse faunas, that is animal remains found at Stone Age dwelling sites in connection with archaeological excavations. The project includes also radiocarbon dating of nonarchaeological bone remains, like teeth and bones of mammoths.
Excavations in the so called Wolf Cave in Karijoki on the Finnish west coast may reveal interesting new data about the faunal history in Finland. The filling of the cave is believed to derive from a time before the last glacial period.
