Starting in the 9th century, Scandinavians (known in Russian sources as "Rus" and "Varangians") penetrated the lands east of the Baltic, going as far as Constantinople (the Greek-speaking capital of the Byzantine Empire) and beyond. The Aifur ship is named after these rapids. Photo: ATA Archives Archaeology by Experiment. The Ship. The Aifur is 9 metres long, 2,2 m wide and its hull weighs approx. 800 kgs. Its construction combines features from different Viking Age boats found in the Baltic region. It carried a 19 sq. m sail. The ship was manned by a sequence of crews, each consisting of about nine people. The Voyage. In 1994, the Aifur crossed the Baltic Sea and sailed up the rivers Neva and Volkhov to Novgorod. Distance covered was 1382 km. The effective time was 307 hours, of which sailing time 192 1/2 hours and rowing time, incl. manual towing, 114 1/2 hours. In 1996, the ship continued from Novgorod. The river Lovat from Kholm upstream was not navigable due to a very low water level, and the portage over the first watershed therefore became far too long to be practicable - horses were not available. However, the crew continued on the rivers Usvyatya, Dvina and Kasplya, crossing the second watershed by putting the vessel on simple wheels, made on site. Including Novgorod to Svetlylahirske on the Dnepr, the distance covered was 1568 km. The effective time was 415 1/2 hours, of which sailing time 113 1/2 hours, rowing, incl. manual towing, 264 hours and manual towing over land, 38 hours. (The stages from Sopki to Usvyaty and from Svetlylahirske to Kherson were covered partly by non-authentic means and are excluded).

Welcome to our Euro Summer School on "The Baltic Sea Region 2010. Theories, Methods and Practicalities" Since the end of theEast-West-Conflict the Baltic Sea region has reappeared at our doorstep. We are dealing with a 'return' of the north-western states of the former Eastern Block to Europe, with the political and cultural design of a transition period, with a process of 'catching up'. Which efforts shall e make to build the necessary ridges for Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to smoothen the political, cultural and above all mental returb from East to West? The conference serie proposes a round package ofhigh-level scientific discourse, wide training impact of Young Researches and an elaborated multidisciplinary approach. The Winter School on Loss, Decline and Doom in the Baltic Sea Area was the first in a planned series of seminars on the Baltic Sea region. It served the aim of bringing together young scholars from various fields in order to create interdisciplinary discussions on the subject. As a follow-up to the Winter School the Summer School will take place in May-July 2003. The Workshops The SummerSchool consists of two parts. The Euro Summer School will commence with a 'Virtual Graduate Colloqium' in May/June 2003 and taking place once a week, where Young Researches can present their own research and point at their problems. This work aims to create a GIS data storage device to contain the results of topographic and historical investigations carried out at various levels in the district and area divisions in the region. The storage devices are formed by both base cartography (IGM quadrants to 25,00 raster, sections, CTR elements and sheets in raster and vector format) and thematic cartography (from "Map Oriented" archives belonging to the Tuscan Region and "Data Set" from the Siena district). Call for Papers Loss, Decline and Doom in the Baltic Sea Area Winter School (Greifswald 7.–12.02.2003) NEW! See website for the Winter School at www.baltic-sea-seminars.org The Eastern parts of Northern Europe, especially the Baltic Sea area, were regarded as a European periphery during the Cold War. However, as the EU enlarges eastwards, the region is regaining its importance as a mediator between East and West and the Baltic Sea is again perceived as a European inland sea. A constant self-reflection in the countries of the region is a consequence of the transformation of the states into a dynamic region of growing importance. Fear of loss and perceptions of decline accompany these societal and political changes. However, from the viewpoint of the “winners”, this transformation is described as a pure success story. The analysis of such fears and visions of doom opens not only a new perspective on the subjects affected by these changes. From the point of view of the cultural, social, political, and legal sciences this long neglected perspective provides also a new focus on the apparently lost, and on the long lasting effects it has on memories and myths, but also on certain concepts of future. Two weeks calendar Citizens Charter Ole Norrback, Finland's ambassador in Oslo, is to chair a committee studying citizen's rights in the Nordic countries. The "Wise Men's Report" that presented ideas for the future of Nordic co-operation defined equality between citizens of all the Nordic countries as a central objective for Nordic co-operation. The group behind the "Wise Men's report" suggested that the Nordic countries should study the potential for a citizens charter. The first step was taken at the meeting of the Nordic ministers of co-operation in Brussels on 6 March. The ministers asked Ole Norrback to chair a committee of eight representatives - one from each of the Nordic states and autonomous areas - to work on a Nordic citizens charter. Status of Baltic co-operation The status of Baltic co-operation is one of the items on the agenda for the meeting between Baltic MPs on the standing committee for co-operation and Joschka Fischer in his role as chairman of the Baltic Council meeting in Berlin on 14 March.

Home News Calendar Working Groups ... Networks Working Group: Under water Heritage Background and justification The maritime heritage is truly an international heritage. It represents the exchange of goods, ideas and culture around the Baltic Sea as well as the link between the region and the rest of the world. The Baltic Sea has been navigated as long as humanity has been present, and for thousands of years the sea has claimed its toll of men and boats. Unlike other areas, the low salinity of the Baltic Sea creates very good conservation conditions. The absence of shipworms and large areas of oxygen-free bottom layers has kept the organic material intact. This has made the Baltic Sea one of the world’s richest areas for shipwrecks. Another important aspect is that parts of the Baltic Sea was dry land during Palaeolithic and Mesolithic times and was then inhabited. Many remains of these habitations are preserved in the sediments of the seabed in the southwestern part of Baltic Sea. These underwater settlement sites are unique in an international context. They represent a specific Baltic heritage which has rich evidence of the Mesolithic culture shedding new light on this period of human culture. Obviously these scientific treasures calls for a strong protection. Today though, most Baltic Sea states have very narrow protective maritime zones for cultural heritage. Only Denmark has declared a 24 nautical miles zone in accordance with Article 303 in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Outside these zones large areas of the Baltic Sea are accessible to divers – archaeologists as well as looters – which calls for concerted actions to protect the underwater heritage.
