Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History by Robert Kaplan Quality Paperback From the assassination that triggered World War I to the ethnic warfare now sweeping Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia, the Balkans have been the crucible of the twentieth century, the place where terrorism and genocide first became tools of policy. This enthralling and often chilling political travelogue fully deciphers the Balkans' ancient passions and intractable hatreds for outsiders. For as Kaplan travels among the vibrantly-adorned churches and soul-destroying slums of the former Yugoslavia, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece, he allows us to see the region's history as a time warp in which Slobodan Milosevic becomes the reincarnation of a fourteenth-century Serbian martyr; Nicolae Ceaucescu is called "Drac," or "the Devil"; and the one-time Soviet Union turns out to be a continuation of the Ottoman Empire.
by Misha Glenny Quality Paperback The history of the Balkan states, like that of so much of the world, has for centuries been marked by ethnocidal fracases, savage wars of conquest and periods of eerie calm. The mountainous region's shifting alliances and divisions have long puzzled outside observers, writes journalist Misha Glenny, the author of

The Balkans and Turkey By 1520 the Ottoman Empire, founded c.1300 by Sultan Osman I, controlled large portions of Asia, the Middle East, and most of southeast Europe. Austria and Russia attacked the northern fringes throughout the period, and the empire slowly collapsed in the 19th century as the Balkan nations emerged. About: Eastern European History

Guide Picks - Top 10 Books: The Balkans Few people understand Balkan history, despite the region being a mainstay of our news for the last decade; this is understandable, for the topic is a complicated one, combining issues of religion, politics and ethnicity. The following selection mixes general histories of the Balkans with studies concentrating on particular regions. The Balkans by Mark Mazower
Slim, cheap, but incredibly useful, this book is the perfect introduction to Balkan history. Mazower takes a broad sweep, discussing the geographical, political, religious and ethnic forces that have been active in the region, while destroying many 'western' preconceptions. The book also delves into some broader discussions, such as continuity with the Byzantine world. The Balkans 1804 - 1999: Nationalism, War and the Great powers by Misha Glenny

Introduction
The territory of the Balkan peninsula, which the Serbs - a Slavic tribe - were to settle and in it create their states, was inhabited from time immemorial. Scientists believe that today's Western and Central European countries were inhabited already in the first period of the Pleistocene (Diluvial, Ice Age), and the man appeared in the Balkans in the period of the last glaciation (Alp glaciation - Wuerm) During those cold climates, 40.000 years ago, perpetual ice descended on 1.500 meters above sea-level. The first communities at the time inhabited caves. Research on these caves, in particular the one under the Jerinini hill in the villages of Gradac and Risovace on Vencac, allows us to recreate their lifestyle. The communities had 10-15 members each, from one to three biological families, who lived chiefly off hunting and fruit gathering. The man, already a Homo sapiens, shaped stone and bones into implements and weapons. He first hunted large herbivores (huge deer, wild horses, and cattle), but when climatic conditions changed (when the prearctic climate prevailed) he hunted mammoths, rhinoceroses, lions and hyenas. Owing to an extremely cold spell, (glaciation Wuerm 3) around 25.000 years B.C., caves were abandoned and human life ceased. The first chapter in the history in human life in communities on the territory of Serbia is thus closed.

    Eagles of the Balkans
    Part 1
by Melissa Snell They were called the Illyrians, a multi-tribe race of peoples who settled in the Balkan Peninsula centuries before succumbing to Roman conquest. As part of the Empire, Illyrians occupied the province of Illyricum, where art, culture, and philosophy flourished, and where they retained their ethnic identity while at the same time rising to positions of prominence, even that of Emperor. When the Empire was divided in 395 AD, the Illyrians came under the jurisdiction of the Eastern portion (the Byzantine Empire); yet their religious affiliation was with the Church of Rome. They continued to distinguish themselves in government, achieving once again the highest seat of power: the emperors Anastasius I, Justin I, and Justinian I were all Illyrians. During the early years of Byzantine rule, the one-time province of Illyricum suffered raids from Huns, Ostrogoths, and Visigoths. In the sixth century, invasions by the Slavs began, and much of the area was assimilated by the invaders, which included Bohemians, Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs. However, the southern Illyrians managed to hold onto their racial identity and their language.

The Balkans Since 1815 1815 to 1839: After the Congress of Vienna
The Ottoman Empire, having emerged from the Middle Ages predominant in the Balkans, controlled Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina at its northern fringes.
1914: Eve of the First World War
The Turks were driven from most of the Balkans in the 19th century and were replaced by rivalrous European powers. With Russian patronage, an independent Serbia was born alongside an Austrian-controlled Bosnia, where a Serbian nationalist ignited World War I by assassinating the Austrian crown prince.
    Between the Two World Wars
The Versailles conference created a unified kingdom of the south Slavs Yugoslavia. It encompassed Serbs, Croatians and Slovenians, with the capital in Belgrade and the lion1s share of influence held by Serbs. Bosnia's Muslims were not recognized as a distinct group.
Nov. 1942: Height of Axis Occupation
The Axis powers occupied Yugoslavia, creating a puppet state in Croatia ruled by local fascists who fought and butchered Serbs, Jews and Gypsies. Yugoslav Communist partisans led by Tito, as well as Serbian royalists known as Chetniks, fought the Nazis, and Tito emerged in control.
1945 to 1990: Cold War Stability
Under Tito, Yugoslavia held together as a federation of six autonomous republics, although Serbs retained great influence, notably in the military. As Communism collapsed, Serbia's President, Slobodan Milosevic, hastened Yugoslavia's disintegration with a blatantly nationalistic appeal to Serbs.
