UC Researcher Goes Back to High School to Write New Book Date: July 23, 2001 By: Dawn Fuller Phone: (513) 556-1823 Archive: Research News A Cincinnati high school is the setting of a new book that examines how students can not only embrace their differences but also flourish in a diverse environment. The book, Adolescents and Inclusion - Transforming Secondary Schools , is co-edited by Anne Bauer, University of Cincinnati professor of teacher education, and Glenda Myree Brown, a UC adjunct professor of education. The book is the result of a two-year study conducted at Purcell Marian High School, a Catholic school that serves a general population in Cincinnati. The book features several academic success stories and the voices of 19 Purcell Marian teachers who participated in the research project. The student population is about 50 percent Euro-American and 50 percent African American. Bauer's research project focused on the triumphs of high school students at risk or who have disabilities. Those groups make up about 20 percent of the student population. She pointed out something the able-bodied may not consider...the effort it takes to navigate a high school when the student is using a wheelchair. "In a typical high school, classes run 50 minutes. For students, that involves seven moves a day. Purcell Marian went to block scheduling, so each student has only four classes a day. That reduced the number of class changes by half."

I'm Martin Gould, the Senior Research Specialist for the National Council on Disability (NCD). NCD is an independent federal agency making recommendations to the President and Congress on issues affecting Americans with disabilities. NCD is charged by Congress with monitoring federal statutes and programs pertaining to people with disabilities, and assessing their effectiveness in meeting their needs. NCD's mission is to provide a voice in the Federal government and to Congress for all people with disabilities in the development of policies and delivery of programs that affect their lives. One of those areas involves public education. Federal Special Education In 1975, when Congress enacted the federal special education lawnow known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEAit found that the educational needs of more than 8,000,000 children with disabilities were not being met.

While it is often a welcome time for many parents after a long summer of having the kids in the house all day, other parents become a little sad at the thought of their kids going to school, especially if it is for the first time, or anxious when they consider what challenges their children will be facing. News and Events Laptops Initiative for students with dyslexia or other reading/writing difficulties The Laptops Initiative is a nationwide ICT in education initiative aimed at supporting post-primary students with dyslexia or other reading /writing difficulties in mainstream education. Thirty-one schools from around the country are participating in this initiative, which is intended to support existing provision by schools for students with learning difficulties. Announcing the initiative in December 2000, the then Minister for Education and Science, Dr. Michael Woods, outlined the difficulties facing these students: "Students with dyslexia or other reading or writing difficulties often fall behind their peers in school achievement and develop feelings of frustration, low self-esteem and poor motivation. They may also be reluctant to read and write due to a sense of embarrassment." The Department of Education and Science provided funding of £2 million for the initiative in December 2000. A grant of £2700 per student participating in the initiative was paid to the schools for the purchase of laptop computers as well as associated software for those second year students identified as eligible for the project, in order that they may have a laptop for school and home use. Each school was also given £3000 in grant aid to purchase back-up equipment for the teachers involved in the initiative.
