Eyes and Vision Back-To-School Eye Exams Audio File Children should have an eye exam by age 3, followed by an annual eye exam before going back to school through age 18. Vision problems that are not detected and treated may lead to permanent damage not only to eyesight but also to performance in school, desire to learn and self-esteem. A child may have good vision one year and problems the next. As children grow, their eyes change shape and problems may develop. Some indications that your child may have a problem seeing include: poor eye-hand coordination; short attention span; squinting; dislike of close work; and headaches. Children with vision problems may not complain because they often assume that everyone sees the way they do. A child's first eye exam at 3 years old provides a baseline for comparison to future back-to-school exams. Children do not have to be able to read or even speak well to have a routine eye exam that can reveal problems. The vision screenings done in school check only distance vision. They miss many vision problems and are not a substitute for a complete back-to-school eye exam by an eye-health professional. A complete exam includes tests to determine how clearly the eyes see, how accurately they focus and how well the eye muscles are working. Color perception, depth perception and field of vision are also tested. A professional eye exam is critical for the early detection of eye disease and is mandatory for children with diabetes.

Akron General Medical Center Back-to-School in Good Health Reprinted from Akron General's Your Health magazine Immunize on time According to Margaret Panzner, MD, of West Side Family Practice Center, there are immunizations to protect children from 10 diseases: measles, mumps, rubella (also known as German measles or three-day measles), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio, Hemophilus influenza type B (Hib), Hepatitis B and varicella (chicken pox). These diseases are uncommon today because of vaccinations. These vaccinations are very safe, with serious reactions occuring very infrequently. The first shots are given soon after birth and are repeated four to five times before children start school since they need several doses to be fully protected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the following schedule for childhood immunizations: Birth to 2 months: Hepatitis B (Hep B) 2 months: Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTP), Hemophilus influenza type B (Hib), Polio (OPV) 2 to 4 months: Hep B 4 months: DTP, Hib, OPV

Back to School Routines Threaten Our Health and Our Environment. Soon kids across Saskatchewan will be settling in regular routines after the lazy days of summer. For many families whose routine includes a twice daily drive to school, that habit may be harming both the health of the children and the environment. Most Canadian children under the age of 11 (82%) live within walking distance of their school. But surprisingly, very few get to school on their own. Kathy Cowan, a Principal in a public school in Toronto, is trying to reduce the health and environmental threats these facts pose. She says, "There's no doubt parents are spending more time chauffeuring their children." However, Cowan quickly adds, "Our school is trying to communicate that there are other ways to be safe, much healthier and environmentally friendly at the same time." With the support of the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Justice, and Education, and national non-profit organizations including the United Way, today's announcement launched a campaign to raise awareness and enroll children in health insurance through CHIP and Medicaid in local communities this fall. Secretary Shalala also announced a $1 million radio campaign, funded by HHS, to promote these upcoming enrollment activities, scheduled from now until October 2. The Back-to-School campaign will include 45 outreach events in more than 25 local areas in partnership with local United Ways, schools, hospitals, community health centers, community-based organizations, and media outlets. "Access to health insurance is what families need to help ensure that their children grow up healthy and strong," said Secretary Shalala. "This campaign is one way that we are pulling together to help hard-working, low-income parents give their children quality health care through CHIP."

Mulvihill, RN-C, Editor of CQ, and Director of Health Services, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, cjm6+@pitt.edu As I begin my 23rd year in college health at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, I reflect on the things that are so important in this business of caring for students. Whether students are new or returning, young or old, nice or not so nice, I remind myself that they are the reason I am here. Here's my "back to school" list of reminders: Wear a Smile A sincere smile and a welcoming attitude work wonders in meeting and greeting new freshmen and upper class students as well. Conveying an approachable, caring image for the health service is important. Although this is an ongoing process, I make a special effort at the beginning of each year to establish credibility with the new students. My mother told me that you only get one chance to make a good first impression. Keep the Antennae Up Particularly at the beginning of a new school year, I try to "keep my antennae up," to be sensitive particularly to the needs of new students. Attention to non-verbals... the student's facial expression and body language... may be more revealing than the verbalized reason for the visit. Both are noteworthy. I remind myself to be sensitive and to listen to the whole person, not just to their words.
