Week 13: Back to school

Hurrah! Preschool's back in session. Harry's so excited to see his teachers and all of his little pals, and I'm so relieved he's happy. Since Harry and I have spent nearly every day of the last month together, I've been bracing myself for a tearful separation . But, thank goodness, our big goodbye was less than cinematic. I asked for a kiss and Harry, busy making a Play-Doh pie, nonchalantly tilted his cheek toward me as if to say, "If you want it, you'll have to come and get it." So I pecked his cheek, gave him a hug, and made a quick exit. As I was leaving I heard him say to one of the teachers, "Mommy's going home. She comes later." Houston, we have a routine! All talk, all the time
Speaking of silence (or lack thereof), everyone always talks about how tiring it is to run after a 2-year-old, but more often than not I'm out of breath from constantly talking: "Do you want noodles or rice?" "Don't take your shoes off!" "Yes, Harry, I see your toes." The most exhausting part of this repartee, I think, is the repetition. If I don't parrot Harry's every word or answer every question he volleys at me, he'll simply switch to automatic pilot, putting the phrase on a continuous loop until I respond: "Wook, Mommy, wook! I have teeth in my mouth! Mommy, Mommy! I have teeth in my mouth!" ad infinitum. Before I had Harry, if I saw a kid trying to get his mom's attention by repeating "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy ..." I'd think, "Why doesn't she just say, 'What, dear?' so he'll shut up?"

    HISTORY
From its beginning as the Department of Commerce for Southern Methodist University to its current stature as one of the nation's top business schools, the Edwin L. Cox School of Business has been educating the country's business leaders for more than 75 years. Named in 1978 in honor of Dallas businessman Edwin L. Cox, the Cox School has a rich heritage that began in 1920 when the SMU Board of Trustees established a Department of Commerce at the request of the Dallas business community. In 1921, the Department of Commerce was renamed the School of Commerce, and in 1941, the Board of Trustees established the School of Commerce as a separate entity from the University. At this point, the School of Commerce became the School of Business Administration and the new bachelor of business administration degree (B.B.A.) was approved by the Trustees. The graduate program at the School of Business Administration began in 1949 with the authorization of a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program. In 1965, the SMU Foundation for Business Administration was established. This group of advisors has helped guide the Cox School throughout the years and today is known as the Executive Board. Also instrumental in supporting the Cox School are members of its two successful mentoring programs: the Associate Board for M.B.A. students and the Business Associates Program for B.B.A. students. These two boards involve almost 300 area business leaders who volunteer their time and expertise to the Cox School and its students who seek the counsel and connections of experienced business professionals.

    http://www.ag.state.il.us/programs/safe2learn/saf2lrn.htm
The Safe To Learn Initiative is the Attorney General’s long-range, statewide, coordinated approach to developing community-based programs for the promotion and preservation of children’s health, safety and education. The initiative is predicated on two beliefs: one, children are entitled to learn and grow in safe and well-prepared environments; two, while the primary responsibility for raising and protecting children rests with parents, there is also a shared responsibility among civic and business leaders to assist in–and not to harm–the work of parents to carry out their profoundly important duties. Component programs of the Safe to Learn initiative fit into one of three categories:
    CHILDREN’S HEALTH AND WELFARE
    School Crisis Assistance Teams
    Youth At Risk Commission

    Al Right Initiatives

    Violent Video Games
    ...
    Illinois Child Advocacy Commission
    CHILDREN'S SAFETY

    Illinois Youth Court Association

    Sex Offender Management Board
    CHILDREN'S EDUCATION
    Safe to Learn Grant Program
    School Violence Tipline

    Toys R Us Settlement

    Task Force on School Safety
The following programs are concerned primarily with the achievement and preservation of children’s emotional and physical health. By no means are these programs designed to meet and obviate every challenge; however, they do represent a serious and concerted effort on behalf of the Attorney General to counter tangible threats to children’s welfare all across Illinois.

Since September 11th, Americans and our allies have united to support the children of Afghanistan, especially now, as Afghan children prepare for the new school year. One extraordinary global effort is a back-to-school project - that will help Afghan women earn money for their families by sewing school uniforms for Afghan girls. This back-to-school project began last month when Afghan Minister for Women's Affairs Sima Simar asked for help to send girls back to school and to send women back to work. She requested:

By Lisa Rapaport Bee Staff Writer
Mercy General Hospital executives have approached officials at Sacred Heart Parish School, which borders the north side of the medical complex, with a proposal to buy the site and relocate the school to make way for additional hospital parking. As Mercy moves ahead with plans to retrofit its medical buildings and construct the $70 million Alex G. Spanos Heart Center at 4001 J St., hospital officials would also like to build a 135-space parking lot and a 500-car parking facility at 3933 I St., the 2-acre site occupied by Sacred Heart. Under the proposal, announced during a neighborhood meeting at the hospital Monday, Sacred Heart could move across 39th Street to a site occupied by a vacant skilled nursing facility owned by Mercy.

    http://www.icccpo.org/articles/general/back_to_school.html
Back to school: School reintegration after childhood cancer Orthopedagogical Centre, University Medical Centre Nijmegen (The Netherlands) The following lecture was presented by two teachers from Holland at the SIOP/ICCCPO meeting 2000 in Amsterdam: Anna’s mother: We brought our sick child to the hospital and gave her life in the hands of strangers. Hoping they would save our Anna. We felt so helpless. Anna had to go through all these terrible treatments and there was nothing we as parents could do. Anna got well and after several months we could take our child home again. But she was not our Anna anymore. It was not the physical changes that made her different. No, her whole personality had changed; she cried a lot, she was demanding and performed badly in school. We had a strange child on our hands and nobody could help us. We felt as if we had lost a bit of our daughter to the disease. With increasing survival rates in childhood cancer, more emphasis has come on improving the quality of life. School functioning is an important aspect of quality of life, because children spend many hours a day in school. And for a child treated for cancer school is of great importance. During treatment, school tasks are a welcome distraction. School is their grip to everyday life, which they were forced to leave when the diagnosis was made. School has a social function. Each child is one of many, part of the group.

    Low back pain
Low back pain is pain affecting the lower part of the back. It is described as:
    • Acute if it has lasted less than 6 weeks.
    • Sub-acute if it has lasted 6-12 weeks.
    • Chronic if it has lasted more than 12 weeks.
Low back pain is very common, costing millions in lost work, as well as millions in medical, state and insurance resources every year. Most back pain does not signify any serious underlying problem, and will sort its self out within a few days to a few weeks.
    Symptoms
Low back pain means a pain or ache somewhere between the bottom of the ribs, at the back, and the top of the legs. The pain often begins suddenly, and may follow an obvious strain or injury, but may seem to come on "out of the blue", or come on slowly. The pain may travel to or be felt elsewhere. It often goes into the buttocks, but may go further down the leg and even into the foot. The pain may be worse on bending and is often worse sitting, especially in an easy chair. Sometimes turning over in bed and sitting up are agonising. Coughing or sneezing can often make the pain much worse. The muscles of the back may go into painful spasm. Back pain may be combined with pain into the leg, travelling down below the knee, this is otherwise known as
