American Cities THE CENTRAL CITY THE SUBURBS THE NEW URBANISM ASSESSING THE AMERICAN CITY We're coming, finally, to a sequence of four portraits of the world's humanized landscapes. That's what human geography is finally about. You could say that we're looking at pattern now, rather than process. Or you could say that we're looking at the visible consequences of all the activities we've been tracing. I want to begin with American cities, because they're the places we know best. What comes to mind with this topic? One thing is downtown, that cluster of skyscrapers that immigrants first saw from the decks of liners coming into New York's harbor. Now we mostly see downtown through a car or plane window, but it still grabs our attention. Around it, there is the huge penumbra of suburbia: freeways, arterial streets, curvilinear residential streets, commercial strips, a carpet of houses with backyard pools, and a scattering of bigger buildingsshopping centerss, college campuses, hospitals, stadiums, warehouses, and factories. Those are the tangibles. There's something else, too. Maybe it's excitement. Maybe it's fear. Maybe it's a sense of a world with nothing worth doing or seeing. Maybe it's some of each.

CALIFORNIA:
[Name given by the first Spanish Explorers]
The third largest and most populous state has great natural diversity ranging from deserts in the southeast to rainforest in the northwest. In between are the towering Sierra Nevada mountains which rise to over 4500 m. Not only is its annual farm output greater than that of any other state, so is its volume of construction and manufacturing.
NEVADA:
[Spanish for snow covered
The state's name is taken from the Sierra Nevada, the mountain range shared with California. Mainly desert, Nevada is a region of rugged mountains, desert valleys and sparsely populated plains. The state is largely known for its glittering casinos which draw visitors from around the world. The first European settlers of the state came for its mineral wealth while large ranches were started in the north where rainfall was sufficient for grazing.
UTAH:
[Name is derived from a Native American word meaning those who dwell high up

Introduction
This lesson plan was developed as part of the Amphitheater School District Technology Literacy Challenge Fund grant. The purpose of the program is to provide teachers with a way of learning about technology and in turn provide students with the best teaching practices and curriculum through technology. This lesson plan was developed as part of the program's TLCF Web Guides, which are a series of web-based lessons designed by teachers to provide students with on-line educational opportunities. Come travel through Arizona as we look at state symbols and geography. Also learn about some famous people and places of Arizona.
Lesson Objectives
  • Students will be able to analyze locations, regions, and spatial connections recognizing natural and cultural processes that impact the way in which people and societies live and interact with each other. Students will become familiar with the Internet by going to different sites looking for information on a Scavenger Hunt.

Sometimes you need to step back to see something clearly. Sometimes this means stepping way, way back. Otherwise, to update an old saying, you can't see the city for the houses. In fact, in the relatively new science of studying urban areas that phenomenon is exactly the problem - when studied at the ground level, a city is such a complicated conglomeration of features that it is hard to make useful generalizations that allow researchers to define different kinds of cities - models that explain key differences that exist between one city and another. What a difference 700 km. makes. Using data analysis techniques developed for research activities in the Central Arizona - Phoenix Long Term Ecological Research Project, Arizona State University geologists William Stefanov and Philip Christensen have turned to satellite data being gathered on 100 cities around the globe by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA's Terra spacecraft, a satellite in polar orbit. In a preliminary analysis of 12 cities, the researchers have found three significant configurations of urban development that they believe can be used to classify cities by their growth and density patterns.

Current Research
Outdoor Human Thermal Comfort Research: Includes the ongoing development and evolution of predictive model to assist urban designers in improving thermal conditions of outdoor spaces. Sustainable Communities: Curriculum development research in planning, addressing water and energy conservation, air quality, waste cycling, and including concepts of bio-regenerative systems, industrial ecosystems and other means of environmentally sustainable community development. The objective is to develop course work that addresses these issues as they relate to regional and global practice. Technology Transfer: Integrating energy, water and other resource conservations technologies and strategies into development projects. Working with architects, engineers, and planners to translate research into practice in ways that facilitate public understanding. Working with the community to encourage and facilitate the adoption of sustainable design practices into projects of various scales; from individual residences to neighborhoods, from suburban center to urban infill.
