Planning is a problem-solving profession which addresses the social, physical and economic well-being of cities, regions and the environment. Many social, physical, economic, technical, and political issues in society are in need of definition and resolution. Among them are: decline in central cities, deterioration of neighborhoods, inefficient and inequitable taxing and regulation policies, congestion and other problems of accessibility, the impact of growth and change, erosion of natural resources including water, land, and air, and inefficient or absent human services. Public planning is one of society's means for addressing these problems in a creative and positive manner. Public Planning is a problem-solving profession that is concerned with the forces that influence the quality of life in the neighborhood, city, region, state, and even nation.

high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
    • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
    • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
    • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
    • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

    Geography
Utah has two dissimilar regions sharply divided by the Wasatch Range (part of the Rocky Mts.), which runs generally south from the Idaho border. To the east of the Wasatch rise high mountains and irregular plateaus; along its western foothills lie the major cities of Utah, while farther west is the Great Basin. In the northeast the snowcapped Uinta Mts. reach the state's highest elevation in Kings Peak (13,528 ft/4,123 m). The dissected Colorado Plateau stretches southward, rugged and largely uninhabitable except in isolated river valleys. Deep, tortuous canyons cut by the Colorado River and its tributaries impede travel but create vistas of remarkable grandeur. Western Utah, part of the Great Basin, was once submerged beneath an extensive Pleistocene lake, Lake Bonneville. For many thousands of years the water level in the lake fluctuated, finally subsiding entirely to leave behind a salt-strewn desert, wide expanses of arid but nonalkaline soil, and a series of lakes.

(The MCCD Curriculum Office maintains this document on a semester basis. Fall 2002 updates will be identified with an and a note after the course.) AGEC is a 35-semester credit general education program of study that fulfills lower division general education requirements for students planning to transfer to any Arizona public community college or university. There are three types of MCCD AGECs. They are the AGEC A, AGEC B, and the AGEC S. Designed to articulate with different academic majors, the requirements vary accordingly. This list of courses compliments and supports the AGEC A, B, and S information within the MCCD college catalogs. The course matrix lists single courses and the general studies area(s) satisfied by each course. Course combinations are also listed with the combinations connected by ampersands. The general studies area(s) satisfied by the combined courses is listed at the end of the combination.
Please be aware of the following general studies policy that allows students to complete the Core and Awareness areas in the AGECs without exceeding 35 semester credits: 1. Courses can satisfy a Core area and one or two Awareness Areas simultaneously.

Integrating the urban experience of all nineteen Western states, Carl Abbott ranges for evidence from Honolulu to Houston and from Fargo to Fairbanks to show how Western cities organize the region's vast spaces and connect them to the even larger sphere of the world economy. His survey moves from economic change to social and political response, examining the initial boom of the 1940s, the process of change in the following decades, and the ultimate impact of Western cities on their environments, on the Western regional character, and on national identity. Today, a steadily decreasing number of Western workers are engaged in rural industries, but Western cities continue to grow. As ecological and social crises begin to affect those cities, Abbott's study will prove required reading for historians, geographers, sociologists, urban planners, and all citizens concerned with America's future.
