What You Can Do with a Major in History Description: Historians research, analyze and interpret the past. They use many sources of information in their research, including government and institutional records, newspapers and other periodicals, photographs, interviews, films and unpublished manuscripts such as personal diaries and letters.  Historians usually specialize in a country or region; a particular time period; or a particular field, such as social, intellectual, political, or diplomatic history.  Biographers specialize in writing about the life of an individual and genealogists specialize in family histories.  Curators work for a museum, special library, or historical society and archivists help study and preserve archival materials, artifacts, and historic buildings and sites. The University of Alabama offers a bachelor of arts, a master’s and doctorate in History.  Please see the undergraduate catalog, graduate catalog and visit the Department of History website. http://www.public-humanities.org/extendingthereach.html
Extending the Reach:
Model Humanities Projects that Provide
Humanities Services for Underserved Audiences
The Model Humanities Projects initiative has supported, in two phases, the planning and implementation of partnerships between state humanities councils and institutions within their states. These grants provide impetus for innovative partnerships and creative programming that engage new audiences with the humanities. As these projects have matured, the partner organizations have assumed responsibility for them and are developing ways to extend the reach of the humanities even further.
The September workshop will bring together the organizations that are implementing the planned projects. It will foster the exchange of ideas and experiences as well as brainstorming about the projects and the partnerships they have sparked. One issue that will be of special concern will be that of evaluation: how they will know that their projects have made a difference.
Alabama
A curriculum guide will introduce K-12 teachers to the historical resources of the Alabama civil rights movement. The guide is being developed by the Alabama Humanities Foundation (http://www.ahf.net) in collaboration with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the National Voting Rights Museum in Selma. It will offer classroom activities to supplement field trips to these museums and to Alabama sites crucial to the civil rights movement.
Alaska
Idaho
Louisiana
The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (http://www.leh.org) created two manuals to help rural towns develop humanities programs. "Extending the Reach to Small and Rural Museums" lays out the components of mounting exhibits and the interpretive and educational projects that complement them. "Developing Our Town Community History Projects" provides small communities the methods of telling their stories accurately and professionally by means of a community history book, a permanent community history exhibit, a community history website, and walking and/or driving tour brochures or booklets of local historic sites.

This month The Indiana Division of Museums and Historic Sites will meet to decide whether to consider acquisition of the C47 Launcher Area as a State Historic Site. The Board of Trustees (for the Division of State Museums and Historic Sites) will review the application and consider adding the site to the state's landholdings. The official position of The Nike Preservation Group is that the State of Indiana has a responsibility to acquire and preserve this site for future generations. The Group has presented a plan to the state which would allow The Nike Preservation Group to provide the means to preserve and restore the site. The Group's plan was submitted as part of the application to the Indiana State Museums and Historic Sites.
