The University of Tennessee and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Graduate School in Genome Science and Technology (GST) offers a unique and multidisciplinary program for full time graduate study leading to a Ph.D. or M.S. degree in the emerging new field of genome science. Postdoctoral positions are available for individuals with Ph.D., M.D., D.V.M., and D.D.S. degrees. The U.S. Human Genome Project is an effort to determine the complete DNA sequence of the human genome, to identify and characterize the estimated 80,000 human genes, to store this information in databases, and to develop tools for data analysis. Researchers are also studying the genetic makeup of several non-human organisms, including numerous bacteria, the fruit fly, and the laboratory mouse. Knowledge of these complete genomes will revolutionize the biological sciences, leading to new discoveries in the health sciences, comparative genomics, proteomics, and environmental biology. Students are trained in emerging areas of the genomic sciences and upon completion of the program will be qualified to join the competitive work force in academics, government laboratories, and private industry such as pharmaceuticals or other technologies. To this end, the program provides a firm foundation in genetics, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry and computing, and specialty training in applications of these sciences to functional genomics.

$250 million EEOC settlement ends age bias in California police, firefighters' disability pay
Justin Pritchard Associated Press Writer 11:42 a.m. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced a record $250 million age-discrimination settlement over a program that gave reduced disability benefits to police and firefighters who were hired after they turned 30. The landmark settlement requires the California Public Employees Retirement System to pay $50 million in retroactive benefits to public safety workers who retired because of injury but didn't get the full benefit. Some 1,700 police, firefighters and other law enforcement workers were affected.

Federal Anti-Discrimination Laws
Here's a description of the major federal laws that prohibit discrimination in the workplace.
There are a number of federal laws that prohibit discrimination in the workplace. Most apply to select employers but a few apply to virtually all employers. The main laws that employers should be aware of are:
  • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act
  • The Age Discrimination in Employment Act
  • The Equal Pay Act
  • The Immigration and Reform and Control Act, and
  • The American with Disabilities Act.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (42 U.S.C. §§ 2000e and following)
Title VII prohibits employers from discriminating against applicants and employees on the basis of race or color, religion, sex, pregnancy, childbirth and national origin (including membership in a Native American tribe). It also prohibits employers from retaliating against an applicant or employee who asserts his or her rights under the law. For example, an employer cannot fire someone for complaining about race discrimination. To learn more about retaliation, see Avoiding Retaliation Complaints by Employees.

San Jose/Valley Posted on Tue, Jun. 25, 2002 Age bias allowed in giving benefits STATE HIGH COURT: FIRMS CAN CUT PERKS FOR OLDER WORKERS By Howard Mintz Mercury News
California's aging workforce got a sobering message Monday from the state Supreme Court: The boss can treat a younger colleague in the next cubicle to better benefits without breaking the law. In a ruling that could apply to company perks ranging from stock options to vacation time, the court unanimously found that California's anti-discrimination laws do not bar employers from using age to deny benefits to workers. Those laws still prevent age bias in hiring, firing and promotions, and they prevent employers from varying benefits based on employees' gender, race and religion. But the justices ruled that employers are free to clip costs when it comes to limiting benefits for workers older than 40 although federal law would most likely still protect workers' health benefits.
