Indigenous peoples and their rights Who are indigenous peoples?
There is no internationally agreed definition of indigenous peoples. In practice at the international level, the term includes a very wide variety of human societies including the ÔnativeÕ and ÔaboriginalÕ peoples of the Americas and the Pacific, the Ôtribal peoplesÕ and Ôminority nationalitiesÕ of Asia and many non-dominant and discriminated ethnic groups in Africa. Indigenous peoples themselves insist on the principle of self-identification and see efforts to impose definitions on them as an affront to their right to self-determination. The principle of self-identification has been accepted by the International Labour Organisation (Convention 169 Article 1(2)) and by the United Nations Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. How many forests are owned or managed by indigenous peoples?
Global data are lacking on the extent to which forests are owned or claimed by indigenous peoples. They inhabit the majority of tropical forests, including mangroves, and also range over, use, own or claim very large proportions of boreal and temperate forests. The absence of reliable, comprehensive information about these peoples and the extent of their territories is just another result of their persistent marginalisation in forestry policies and practice.

GLOSSARY
Q: WHO ARE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE? A: Tropical rainforests are bursting with life. Not only do millions of species of plants and animals live in rainforests, but many people also call the rainforest their home. In fact, Indigenous, or native, people have lived in rainforests for thousands of years. In North and South America they were mistakenly named Indians by Christopher Columbus, who thought that he had landed in Indonesia, then called the East Indies. Q: IN GENERAL, HOW DO INDIGENOUS PEOPLE LIVE? A: Although many Indigenous people live much like we do, some still live as their ancestors did many years before them. These groups organize their daily lives differently than our culture. Everything they need to survive, from food to medicines to clothing, comes from the forest. FOOD Besides hunting, gathering wild fruits and nuts and fishing, Indigenous people also plant small gardens for other sources of food, using a sustainable farming method called shifting cultivation. First they first clear a small area of land and burn it. Then they plant many types of plants, to be used for food and medicines. After a few years, the soil has become too poor to allow for more crops to grow and weeds start to take over. So they then move to a nearby uncleared area. This land is traditionally allowed to regrow for 10-50 years before it is farmed again.

Rigoberta Menchú: "We will demand an explanation from the UN"
By María Laura Mazza*
We will demand that UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan account for the exclusion of indigenous peoples from the agenda of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Menchú told Tierramérica. JOHANNESBURG - Latin American indigenous leaders issued a warning prior to the World Summit on Sustainable Development, which met until Sep 4 in South Africa: the voice of the indigenous will be ignored. Their prediction proved correct.
Ten years ago, at the Earth Summit, in Rio de Janeiro, the Latin American indigenous movement made important strides in achieving recognition of their rights That year, the Nobel Peace Prize went to an indigenous leader for the first time: Rigoberta Menchú. The Indigenous Peoples Decade was declared and the United Nations created a permanent forum on indigenous peoples.
In contrast, during the Rio+10 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, which was to serve as a follow-up on the Rio agreements, indigenous groups were scarcely present, had limited influence on the negotiations, and were ignored by the media.

Hence a more careful and sensitive consideration of their interests is a touchstone of sustainable development policy.’

This is a necklace made by Faye Thayer of Ft. Washakee, Wyoming. Faye is Eastern Shoshone. Beads were in prized in Native North America and were in use long before white contact. Archaeological information tells us that beads were in use as far back as history can be extrapolated. Native Beads were generally made of natural materials like wood, bone, shell, and metal. Europeans introduced colorful glass beads. In the Beads were used as currency for global trade rather than paper money. KwaZulu-Natal Programme for Survivors of Violence These are Friends in South Africa. Their work is primarily with Zulu and Xhosa communities that are victims of the Apartheid. The bead was made in Venice, probably in the mid 1700s. This type of bead was widely traded in Africa, hence the common name "African Trade Bead." The Waseskun Network These are First Nations Friends in Canada. Their work is primarily with men who have been in corrections. This is a French Ambassador Bead, given by visiting French traders as a gift of respect to tribal headmen. The most interesting aspect of this bead is that it is made of clear glass. This was a difficult affect to achieve prior to the time of thermostat controlled heat to melt the glass.

The Pygmies of Central Africa
Africa is the second largest of the Earth's seven continents, covering about 22 per cent of the world's total land area. Home to nearly 15 million indigenous peoples - mostly nomadic - and with a wealth of plant and animal species, the protection of Africa's peoples and its rich biodiversity is vital to the future of life on Earth. Throughout history, Africa has been blighted by colonisation, natural disasters and political unrest. Floods, hurricanes, droughts, famine and civil war stretch back centuries. In the last five years, Onaway has established contacts whose function is to address the ongoing plight of the indigenes whilst ensuring that traditional cultures remains intact. Our main focus is to support sustainable projects with environmentally-sound aims, improve the health of the people whilst providing spiritual upliftment to the whole community. One such project provides support to two Pygmy villages* in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Recognised by many as the first settlers in the Virunga region
