Adoption: What to expect at different ages
(keywords: adopt, adoptee, adoption, adopting, adoptive, agency, attorney, baby, birth, birthparent, child, infant, international, support)
Now that you have adopted a child and life-is beginning to settle down, you may find your thoughts moving to the future. When shall I tell my child that s/he is adopted? How will s/he feel about it? At what point will s/he want more information? What will s/he want to know from me? How can I help my child feel comfortable about being adopted? Whether children are adopted as infants or when they are older, whether they are healthy or have physical or psychological problems, their adoption is bound to influence their development. You need to understand how and why. Learning about the developmental stages of children and what can be expected in each stage is important to all new parents. When your child has been adopted, there are additional considerations. In these pages, we will be looking at specific issuesseparation, loss, anger, grief, and identityand show how they are expressed as your adopted child grows up. Some of these issues will be obvious in all stages of development; others surface at specific times. The more thoroughly you can understand how your child behaves and why, the more likely it is that you can be supportive and help your child to grow up with healthy self-esteem and the knowledge that s/he is loved. While the stages described below correspond generally to a child's chronological age, your child's development may vary significantly. Some children progress more quickly from one stage to another; others may continue certain behaviors long past the time you would have expected. Still others may be substantially delayed in entering and moving through new stages. Many characteristics of adolescence, for instance, may not even appear until your child's twenties and may persist until your child's identity has formed.

Adoption Tools - The Life-Long Developmental Process
This link is to provide you with additional things to think about as you go down the adoption path and to provide information on issues that may need to be addressed through out the life of your child. Adoption does not end on the day of the adoption decree, but is just beginning.
Children who are adopted grow up not knowing many of the things that we take for granted. For instance most adults know who their birth parents are. What they look like? Whether they are right or left-handed. If they had blue, green or purple eyes. Most adults have probably seen a picture of themselves when s/he was a baby. For adoptees these are often unanswered questions that leave blanks in their history of their life. Adoptees are the ones who in school have to figure out how to make a family tree.
Things to start thinking about.
Thinking about adoption is the beginning of the process. There are several things that you need to do to start preparing yourself for adoption. Below is a list of questions that will help you focus on adoption.
You need to start thinking about:
  • Do you want to adopt a child privately? Internationally? Or through a public agency?

Adoption is an emotional experience. It is also a physical experience, a biological, and a psychological experience. I act as a facilitator for an adoption support group in Timmins Ontario. I am also what I call a 'friend' (and sometimes a self imposed facilitator) in the membership of an internet group called CANADopt In those roles, and in my own experiences, I have come to see the issues surrounding the Adoption Experience as a multidimensional thing. What many call the adoption 'Traid' is more than a two dimensional triangle of birthparent (bparent), adoptee (or bchild), and adoptive parent (aparent). Adoption affects those three major groups of people, but beyond those immediate beings, there are a myriad of people and issues. These pages attempt to introduce you to some of those issues...

Will the woman be prosecuted for trying to sell the child? If not, why not? This is a crime against humanity or has the value of a child been brought down to mere money? Can the "authorities" do anything about this matter or do they/ we not care? Preface
An announcement of the intention to develop this handbook and the need for faculty to sign up for confidential interviews was sent to faculty during the summer of '99. A. Tracy Hassett of Human Resources conducted the interviews and compiled the responses. A copy of the questions asked can be found at the end of this handbook. Comments from the ten faculty interviewed are compiled here: six women and four men. They come from many different departments, and had their children both recently and in the more distant past. We consider this to be a living document - one that should reflect new experiences and stories to share. If you have comments or additions, please contact Tracy Hassett or myself. All additions will be confidential. We will also put this document on the web, thereby creating an even better resource for our community, and the world.

Adoption Issues and Ideas
What adoption issues are most pressing in Canada today, and what are some ideas for improving the lives of everyone involved in adoption? We asked Elspeth Ross, an educator, researcher, Board member of the Adoption Council of Canada, and the adoptive mother of young adults. Here’s what she told us about some issues and ideas that have come out of her own involvement with adoption and from listening to others in the adoption community:
  • Among Canadians there is a general lack of awareness about adoption, despite the fact that a large percentage of the population is involved in some way. Provincial and federal governments need to take more responsibility for all aspects of domestic and international adoption, and to work together on behalf of children. We need federal legislation, and funding for data collection, think tanks and programs like Canada’s Waiting Children. Canada urgently needs more research and publishing on adoption. We lack basic data, especially on: the number of children in care, adoption successes, children’s need for a permanent home, and the movement of children from foster care into adoption. We can learn from the examples set by the United States and the United Kingdom, where there are institutes for researching adoption.

IV. QUALITIES OF WEAK ATTACHMENT THAT COMPLICATE HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
The above problems are often resistant to traditional behavioral management programs. Many of these symptoms become persistent despite quality care giving and treatment. If the above behaviors persist over a long period of time, true attachment disorder can be considered. Weaknesses in attachment may produce the above symptoms or problems in varying degrees.

veral factors are now limiting the adoption of InfiniBand, amplified by the economic downturn:
    • Supply issues: Intel in 1Q02 backed away from producing InfiniBand fabrics (switches) and silicon, leaving IBA hardware to be produced by IBM and smaller companies that in the economic downturn may not have the financial clout to ramp up production for any IBA demand, restricting any uptake. Furthermore, PCI is not standing still. Demand issues: Microsoft in 2Q02 became the second heavyweight to remove commitments incorporating InfiniBand driver support (in its Windows .Net operating system). Both Intel and Microsoft see the use of InfiniBand for server-to-server memory channel or clustering, and not as generic I/O for storage and network.
Mellanox and Banderacom are two IBA silicon companies to further dim the light on the long-awaited InfiniBand market (laying off up to 50 percent of their employees). For any startup company, cash flow is of critical concern for viability in this economic climate. Because we believe InfiniBand market demand will not significantly materialize until at least 2004, other IBA fabric startups (e.g., Mellanox, Vieo, Lane15, and InfiniCon), as well as more solution-oriented vendors (e.g., YottaYotta) that do not have the financial arrangements to survive until revenues appear, will fail without the continued backing from IBM. The IBA consortiums need at least one silicon provider, one management provider, or IBM to survive, without which the consortiums will die/fall apart.
