Metro Metroactive Central Poet as Witness

Russian novelist and literary legend Yevgeny Yevtushenko reads at San Jose State By Richard von Busack Yevgeny Yevtushenko is perhaps Russia's best-known living poet. As such, and as a figure of dissent, he is to Russia what Bob Dylan once was to America. Like Dylan, Yevtushenko was a star. At least once, Yevtushenko filled a stadium to hear him read; at a time of national crisis, he could be seen declaiming on the barricades. He was well-known enough in left and intellectual circles here to be parodied in Doonesbury . He will be 63 this year, however, and in his new novel, Don't Die Before You're Dead (Random House), he looks at himself with an irony and skepticism that Dylan has never mustered. He will read from the novel this Friday at San Jose State University as a guest of the Center for Literary Arts. Yevtushenko witnessed the crucial historical moment in August 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed, which is the subject of Don't Die Before You're Dead . Through both fictional and real-life characters (including himself), Yevtushenko is present to watch the failure of the military coup, to watch the army tanks rolling on grounds littered with torn-up Communist Party cardsand to watch the soldiers refuse to turn their guns on their own people. In recalling the tension of that moment, Yevtushenko reminds the reader that the coup's hard-line Communist planners had ordered up a quarter of a million pairs of handcuffs for the aftermath of their takeover.

Ray and the legendary Yevtushenko at Bratsk Station.
The occasion of our tour was Yevtushenko’s annual birthday performance at the Moscow Polytech and the opening of the Poet’s House, a museum in his childhood home at the Siberian crossroads of Zima Junction. Our cast included a international line-up of poets, critics, and yevtushenkologists representing Poland, France, Nicaragua, the United States and the whole of Russia from St. Petersburg to Kamchatka. Over the course of two weeks I participated in a dozen readings, four tv/radio interviews and a panel discussion, “Poetry in the 21st Century.” The one constant on the trip can be summed up by Gogol’s quote from the last century, ‘the two problems with Russia are the roads and the food.” That being said, the hospitality and poetic intelligence of the people more than made up for any inconvenience.

A poet's autobiography is his poetry.
Anything else is just a footnote.
Great poetry is more than good advice.
Envy is an insult to oneself.
In any man who dies there dies with him,
his first snow and kiss and fight.
Not people die but worlds die in them.
When there is freedom of speech, I've found that the majority of people really have nothing to say. He who is conceived in a cage yearns for the cage. Be equal to your talent, not your age. At times let the gap between them be embarrassing. Everything I do, I do on the principle of Russian borscht. You can throw everything into it beets, carrots, cabbage, onions, everything you want. What's important is the result, the taste of the borscht. In Russia all tyrants believe poets to be their worst enemies.

This angry poem may have been written thirty years ago - but the bitch that bred the subject of the poets wrath is dangerous - and on heat again!

- Thursday, February 13, 2003 at 05:29:59 (EST) I am a junior in highschool, never having learned about the Kent State shootings in school, I wanted to learn of it on my own. This is the first time I read this poem, and never had heard about it before. I only wish that all could read this and understand its message, which is so touchingly related by its author.

Mr. Yevtushenko will be appearing in Wichita Falls April 2-4, 2002 Yevgeny Yevtushenko, internationally recognized poet and former Soviet dissident, was one of the first voices within the Soviet artistic community to speak out against Stalinism and anti-Semitism. His anti-Stalinist positions and growing reputation as a poet in the late 1950's and 60's made him a leaser of Soviet youth and a celebrity in the West. One of his best-known poems, "Babi Yar," is a protest of the deaths of thousands, mostly Jews, during the Nazi occupation of Kiev in WWII. "Babi Yar" was also the inspiration for Dmitri Shostakovich's 13th Symphony . Poet, novelist, essayist, and film director, Yevtushenko has toured 93 countries giving poetry readings, and his poems have been translated into 72 languages.

14/7/88 To Yevgeny Yevtushenko I
Allow me to disagree.
The first presentiment is not shame
nothing committed, nothing to be guilty for.
The first presentiment is an unaccountable loss,
a feeling that there is something
that was supposed to be done somewhere,
a forgotten task that we may or may not
be great enough to fulfil.
I have always claimed a difference
between responsibility and guilt. II Apart from this, I stand by you for your fight against injustice and falsity. Am I wrong to blame my mother and my "situation" for not giving me the opportunities to protest against Babiy Yar alongside you? For the fact that I have felt empty and jealous when I hear of those great discussions in Smolny or the Sorbonne? Do you ever envy Lenin for having been alive at the right place and the right time? Do I ask too much? Perhaps I should move forward, but learn from the past as you suggest. Ah! But how difficult it all seems! Are you never torn with not knowing?

Josh Bazuin
The Praise and Criticism of the Soviet Communist Government in Yevgeny Yevtushenko's Poetry
"Irreconcilable," written by Yevtushenko in 1956, begins with a review of the poet's amicable relationship with his government. He believes that the literary career that the Communists have allowed him is a fair trade for his friendship, as illustrated in the following: "I'll offer life my friendship / ... into the bargain." Yevtushenko also acknowledges that this arrangement has brought him economic stability and the full ability to express himself artistically without economic concerns getting in the way: "Since I have no petty worries." (5) Furthermore, Yevtushenkosays that he is "indebted to the future" (6) and must someday pay the government back. However, Yevtushenko ends this section of praise for the Communist government with that thought; later sections of the poem criticize the government of Russia. "Irreconcilable" is not a poem which glorifies the Communist system. Even in the pro-Communist beginning, there are already negative overtones. The poet states, "I offer life my friendship and my hostility into the bargain" (3,4). The hostility that Yevtushenko is referring to becomes clear later in the poem, where he does not directly attack the government, but his remarks acknowledge the consequences he will face if he should break its rules. He will not compromise in any form, even in the face of death:

THE KNOCK AT THE DOOR
«Who’s there?» «I’m Old Age. I've come after you.» «Not now. I’m busy. I’ve got things to do.» I did some writing, eating. Then I made a call. I opened up the door. There was no one there at all. Perhaps, it was a friend of mine?... Just playing?... Or I didn’t quite catch what the voice was saying? It wasn’t Old Age. Maturity came by which couldn’t wait and went away with a sigh...
THE PALACE
I know, there's some idea behind a fairy tale, and
I remember up to now the dream I had long, long ago:
    I sit somewhere on a sea-shore, a daring fellow,
Leaning on my ax, downhearted, feeling low.
The day before the good old tsar had asked me to come over, And, among other things, he said the following to me: «You're poorly dressed, your clothes are patched all over
