WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS Poet/Playwright William Butler Yeats was a towering figure in English literature at the turn of the 20th Century, not the least because of his poems and plays. Combining an immense knowledge of Irish folklore and Gaelic verse with a self-conscious flamboyance, Yeats was largely responsible for convincing the rest of the world that those Irish guys sure can write, and that they have a heck of a national identity as well. He was elected one of the first senators of the Irish Free State (1922-28), and awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1923. The Bounty of Sweden was Yeats' tribute to Swe- den for his award of the Nobel Prize. Printing of the work was completed on the last day of May 1925 in an edition of 400 copies. It was the first book issued from Cuala's new shop and workrooms at 133 Lower Baggot Street in Dublin, to which the press had moved after several years in the poet's house at 82 Merrion Square, Dublin. The circular device on the title page, depicting a hawk attacking a small bird, was designed by T. Sturge Moore at Yeats' request in 1921. This copy is a setting or proof copy, with numerous pencil corrections in the margins, inscribed by Yeats on July 9, 1925. Autograph letter signed, to [Shri Purohit] Swami, Dublin, July 3 [1932], 2 pages. As a young man, Yeats studied at the School of Art in Dublin where, along with a fellow student George Russell (A.E.), he developed an interest in mystic religion and the supernatural. William Butler Yeats June 13, 1865 - January 28th, 1939 William Butler Yeats is one of the many famous names to come from the original Golden Dawn. His poetry and writings were a display of his passion for mysticism and the Occult Sciences. These were largely expressed in various publications (e.g. Your Pathway), earning him the Nobel Prize in 1924 for literature. But more important was his desire and striving for knowledge of that which is beyond what we know and that of the unknown. William Butler Yeats was third-generation Irish, born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. From day one he was up against a wall regarding his religious beliefs, for his grandfather was a deeply Orthodox Rector in the Church of England, while his father was a complete religious skeptic. With this conflict already in place, young William walked the very fine line of between faith and disbelief. Being faced with this dilema, Yeats was destined to find the balance by whatever means necessary. This first step occurred after reading numerous text on the subjects of Occultism, the Tibetan Mysteries, Buddhism, and other beliefs. All of these subjects ignited his desire to learn and to know. Aside from his readings, what further expanded his desire was his discovery of a society purporting to be Ancient and non-European. This new movement simply called The Theosophical Society, claimed to have the ability to offer a "synthesis" of religion, science, and philosophy. For at that particular time in human development, none of these three disciplines were ready to integrate with the other, but this is what fascinated Yeats. This is what he longed for.

When You Are Old William Butler Yeats Search all of William Butler Yeats Irish poet, dramatist and prose writer, one of the greatest English-language poets of the 20th century. Yeats received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Between the Celtic dreams of THE WANDERINGS OF OISIN (1889) and the intellectual, often obscure poetry of the 1930s, Yeats produced a tremendous amount of works. In his early career Yeats studied William Blake's poems, Emanuel Swedenborg's writings and other visionaries, but later he began to confront reality with a new directness - and disillusionment. Central theme in Yeats's poems is Ireland, its history, folklore and contemporary public life. William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin. His father was a lawyer turned to an Irish Pre-Raphaelite painter. In 1867 the family followed him to London and settled in Bedford Park. In 1881 they returned to Dublin, where Yeats studied the Metropolitan School of Art. He met there the poet, dramatist and painter George Russell (1867-1935), who was interested in mysticism. Reincarnation, communication with the dead, mediums, supernatural systems and Oriental mysticism fascinated Yeats through his life. In 1886 Yeats formed the Dublin Lodge of the Hermetic Society and took the magical name Daemon est Deus Inversus. The occult order also attracted Aleister Crowley.
