Wouk, Herman: Herman Wouk grew-up in Hunts Point in the 1930's and 1940's. His service in the Navy in World War II provided some basis for his great novel, "The Caine Mutiny," and for the later "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance." His experiences in The Bronx, however, provided memorable scenes in two other novels, "City Boy," and "Inside Outside." In Inside, Outside , Wouk writes of the assimilation into the main-stream American way of life without having to abandon his Jewish roots: We ate Friday supper and Saturday dinner at the oval dinning table in the parlor; otherwise we ate in the kitchen. With this shift in setting went different talk. The incessant weekly laundry chatter - what Brodofsky said, what Gross did, the repairs to the boiler, the threat of a strike, the troubles with Jake the drunk - all this endless busniess drivel - was shut off. My parent told stories of their Minsk childhoods, sand old songs of the old country, played little table games, games as simple as trying to slap a hand before it was snatched away, or they asked us about our Jewish studies, Lee's at an afternoon Yiddishist school, mine witha Hebrew tutor. After supper, Pop would read SHolem ALeichem aloud, and Lee and I would roll around on the davenport screaming with laughter, tears streaming down our cheek, while Mama too laughed like a fool. -Herman Wouk

On a small table next to him a line of his books stood at attention, as if waiting for inspection. But they had to wait. First, he had a joke to tell. This was not what one would expect from a Pulitzer Prize-winning author of 11 novels, three plays and two works of nonfiction. But it was entirely in keeping with the man who wrote for radio comedian Fred Allen for five years, a fact Dr. Billington had just noted in introducing him. The joke was an old one, a kind of humorous story that has long gone out of fashion. It concerned a man who received a slip of paper with his fortune on it when he stepped up to a coin-operated scale in the subway. (The presence of this object alone was enough to date the story). The man reads the fortune to his wife, who is standing nearby. “You are handsome, congenial, intelligent, imaginative and attractive to women,” it says. His wife looks at the fortune, looks at the scale and says, “They got the weight wrong too, didn’t they?” The joke was the perfect rejoinder to Dr. Billington’s formal introduction, which had traced the highlights of the 85-year old author’s long and varied career. It signaled that this was to be a relaxed evening, something Mr. Wouk had characterized earlier as a “ramble through a literary life.” And what a life it has been, one so filled with achievement and success that the Library named Mr. Wouk a “Living Legend” as part of its Bicentennial celebration this year.

Edited by Barbara A. Paulson, the book is based on discussions about the nature of historical fiction and tributes to Herman Wouk that took place at the Library of Congress on May 15, 1995. Sponsored by the Center for the Book, the event marked the gift by Mr. Wouk to the Library of Congress of the manuscripts of five of his historical novels (Winds of War, War and Remembrance, Inside Outside, The Hope and The Glory). During the day a distinguished group of 17 writers, historians, publishers, and librarians discussed historical fiction as a genre and Herman Wouk's achievements.. Their comments have been edited for the book, which concludes with Mr. Wouk's after-dinner address, "L'Envoi: A Personal Vision of the Historical Fiction to Which I Have Devoted Thirty Years." The book, after introductions by Center for the Book Director John Y. Cole and Editor Barbara A. Paulson, begins with remarks from biographer Robert Caro, who recalled his reading of Mr. Wouk's
