George Woodcock
Biography
Born in Canada, George Woodcock went to England in early childhood and lived there until his return to Canada in 1949. He wrote first as a poet, and began publishing in the little magazines of the Thirties. Pacifism led him logically to anarchism (to deny violence implies to deny coercion); his friendship with Marie Louise Berneri was the most important influence in leading him to anarchist activism between 1940 and 1949, when he was one of the editors of War Commentary and Freedom and also founding editor of the libertarian literary review, Now, Among his forty books are biographies of anarchists like Kropotkin, Proudhon and Wilde, and near-anarchists like Aldous Huxley and George Orwell; his Anarchism is one of the leading histories in English of libertarian ideas and movements. Reading
George Woodcock: The Rejection of Politics (excerpt) Modem, Western man, however, lives in a world which runs according to the mechanical and mathematical symbols of clock time. The clock dictates his movements and inhibits his actions. The clock turns time from a process of nature into a commodity that can be measured and bought and sold like soap or sultanas. And because, without some means of exact time keeping, industrial capitalism could never have developed and could not continue to exploit the workers, the clock represents an element of mechanical tyranny in the lives of modem men more potent than any individual exploiter or than any other machine. It is therefore valuable to trace the historical process by which the clock influenced the social development of modern European civilization.

Friends of the Library and others gathered last November in Main Library to celebrate the life and career of writer and former UBC professor George Woodcock. He was remembered as a prolific voice of commentary, creativity and criticism. During his career he wrote and edited more than 120 titles, ranging from biography and history, to travel and poetry. He received the Governor General's Award for Crystal Spirit , a 1966 study of his mentor, author George Orwell. Woodcock's 1962 text, Anarchism , earned internaitional acclaim. Woodcock played an important role in supporting literary voices in this country. In 1959, he co-founded the first periodical devoted entirely to Canadian writing, Canadian Literature , which continues to publish. Through gifts received from his wife, Ingeborg Woodcock, the West Coast Book Prize Society, and many of his friends, UBC established the George Woodcock Canadian Literature and Intellectual Freedom Endowment Fund. All gifts received matching funds from the UBC President's Fund. A permanent display in honour of George Woodcock stands outside the Ridington Room in the Main Library.

Obituary
George Woodcock
GEORGE WOODCOCK, author of two well known and widely available books on anarchism - Anarchism and The Anarchist Reader - has died, aged 82. Born in Winnipeg, Canada on May 8th, 1912 his life spanned some of the highest and lowest moments of the movement he came to chronicle. He first became active in Anarchist politics in the 1930s when his family returned to England from Canada to escape poverty. For a long period he was editor of the anti-war paper, War Commentary and the anarchist newspaper, Freedom. His political involvement in the years leading up the Second World War coincided with the great achievements of the Spanish anarchist movement in 1936-37. Woodcock, like most of his contemporaries - George Orwell and Herbert Read among others - sought to raise awareness of the revolution in Spain and of what was being achieved by the Spanish working class against great odds. He was a firm believer in the working class's ability to reorganise society along fundamentally democratic and egalitarian lines. The defeat of the Spanish anarchist movement came, accordingly, as a bitter blow. Even so, Woodcock's own support for anarchism and the anarchist idea continued. While his contribution to other areas grew on his return to Canada, most notably creative writing, he remained, nonetheless, committed to encouraging a better understanding of what anarchism stood for and its continuing relevance to movements for social change. For a long period his two best known books were the only comprehensive guides widely available about anarchism in the English language, and for this reason alone he will be remembered.

george woodcock Resources. Canadian Travel Writing and george woodcock
http://www.cdn-lit.ubc.ca/resources/martin.html
George Woodcock Resources Canadian Travel Writing and George Woodcock By Carol Martin Story telling and travel writing are inexorably linked. The earliest forms of story no doubt included first-person accounts of traveling somewhere new, seeing unusual sights, and meeting strange new people. The discovery of Canada is a long series of travel stories from the Norse sagas, to the
journals of such men as Samuel Hearne, Alexander Mackenzie, and Sir John Franklin, to the present with accounts each year, in one form or another, of the experiences of adventurers or researchers retracing the routes of earlier explorers, or trying to establish just exactly where Franklin's body might be found. Writers such as Germaine Warkentin and Margaret Atwood have written of thefascination of these stories and their importance in the development of the Canadian literaryimagination. Until quite recently, listings for Canadian travel writing in bibliographic resources included only these tales of explorers and other foreign visitors to the country. It was as though there had been no body of work by Canadian writers that could be included in this genre. As it happens this was far from the case.

George Woodcock Resources George Woodcock, Canadian Critic By W.H. New Collected Poems I, 139)I mounted the steps in the UBC Library to a small room on the eighth floor, there to meet with my oral examination committee: among them, Donald Stephens, Roy Daniells, William Hall, and George Woodcock. I didn't know then that I would later become their colleague, and George's assistant with the magazine Canadian Literature , which had only just recently begun publishing. Nor did I know what George would later still write about his sense of what constituted Canadian writing before he actually returned to Canada in the 1940s: Mazo de la Roche, Grey Owl, Leacock, and Paul Pottshe said, "[Charles G.D.] Roberts was for me the writer about animals I had read as a child, and my father had brought back Ralph Connor's novels and Frederick Niven's early books when the family returned to Canada from England in 1913. (My first ideas of British Columbia were shaped by Niven's Lost Cabin Mine .)" (

George Woodcock
Worldwide, he is most well known for his books on the philosophy of anarchism and its history, and for his well-received biography, The Crystal Spirit , on his friend George Orwell. From a national perspective, he was a literary champion, founding the journal Canadian Literature in 1959, finally passing on its editorship eighteen years later. The journal was the first of its kind, and it provided a much-needed place for the exploration and celebration of the works of Canadian literary authors. Ravens and Prophets The Crystal Spirit . He taught at the university into the 1970s, and was awarded an honourary DLitt by UBC in 1977 (he received 5 other honourary degrees from other universities). He refused many awards, including the prestigious Order of Canada, choosing to accept only those given by his colleagues and peers. Despite his deteriorating health, G.W. continued to pursue his writing career in the 80s and into the 90s, though not producing to the same degree as he did in the decades before. He published the third installment of his autobiography, and
