Here's a fairly new addition to this page: the lyrics to many of the songs used in the Masterpiece Theatre television series. For sound files of these songs, as well as much much more about the series itself, see Snippets are available from the following stories:
The Reverent Wooing of Archibald
"People who enjoyed a merely superficial acquaintance with my nephew Archibald (said Mr. Mulliner) were accustomed to set him down as just an ordinary pinheaded young man. It was only when they came to know him better that they discovered their mistake. Then they realized that his pinheadedness, so far from being ordinary, was exceptional. Even at his Club, where the average intellect is hot high, it was often said of Archibald that, had his brain been constructed of silk, he would have been hard put to it to find sufficient material to make a canary a pair of cami-knickers." Goodbye to All Cats
"Do you know," said a thoughtful Bean, "I'll bet that if all the girls Freddie Widgeon has loved and lost were placed end to end - not that I suppose one could do it - they would reach halfway down Piccadilly."

His father was a magistrate in Hong Kong. His mother was visiting her sister in England when her son, soon to be known as Plum or Plummie, was born. Wodehouse was the third of four children. As a child he knew nothing of family life: his parents lived in Hong Kong and as was the custom of the time, sent their first three sons to England for their health and education when Plum was only two. He was looked after by Miss Roper, a complete stranger, until he was five, then attended three small schools as a boarder. He later commented: "Looking back I can see that I was just passed from hand to hand. It was an odd life with no home to go to, but I have always accepted everything that happens to me in a philosophical spirit." In 1894 Wodehouse joined his brother Armine at Dulwich College, where for the first time he gained a sense of stability and belonging. He studied Classics, "the best form of education I could have had as a writer". He joined in sports, served as a prefect, sang in concerts and edited the

    P. G. Wodehouse
Pelham ("Plum") Grenville Wodehouse (pronounced "Woodhouse") was the greatest writer in English of this centurybut sadly overlooked by most `serious' critics because he wrote comedy and lyrics for musicals. As a lyricist, Wodehouse was the father of the modern musical. In the early part of this century Kern, Bolton and Wodehouse wrote a number of musicals for a tiny New York theatre, the Princess and transformed the American muscial forever. Before, the musical comedy had "exotic" locales and simple music and was based on the operetta of the 19th century. Bolton, Kern and Wodehouse made it a play with music, set in contemporaneous society and featuring ordinary people. Furthermore the lyrics of the song were an integral part of the plot. The pinnacle of this sort of music is surely Bill , written in 1917 and used by Kern in Showboat a haunting song about a man so ordinary that the girl can't explain why she loves (Just My) Bill And as a wordsmith he has no equal. He could, as Evelyn Waugh put it, "produce on average three uniquely brilliant and original similes to every page". His stories were not written to be "important" or to appeal to critics; they were straightforward humour. He was a punctilious and diligent writer whose only aim was to make as many people as possible laugh. Here is an excerpt from the introduction to Summer Lightning A certain criticfor such men, I regret to say, do existmade the nasty remark about my last novel [

There is no doubt that virtually everyone has either read, heard or seen some of Wodehouse work, and the success of the various series over the years prove that his writings are classics. Although criticised by some of writing material that is out of touch, his answer was to treat his stories as a sort of period piece and ignore that it was only fairly recent. He also beleived that there were two ways of writing novels. His was of making it a sort of musical comedy without the music and ignoring real life, the other was to go deep down into life and not give damn. Born in 1881 in Guildford, Surrey, Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was the son of a Civil Servant and was educated at Dulwich College (a place he retained affection for until his death in 1975, and has a number of his effects). He started his working life in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank before giving up the heady heights of finance for writing. And what a writer! He produced around a hundred books (a nightmare for any collector, but a Godsend for any avid reader!), created the characters of Bertie Wooster and his ever-resourceful manservant Jeeves, the environs and inhabitants of Blandings Castle, including the prize porker, The Empress of Blandings, and was also involved in some dozen or so straight plays, and about 250 lyrics for musical comedies. He married in 1914 and became an American citizen in 1955. Twenty years later he was made a Knight of the British Empire in the New Years Honours list, and in an interview said his ambitions had now been achieved. He died on St Valentines day in the same year.

    P. G. Wodehouse Appreciation Page
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) was an English humorist who wrote novels, short stories, plays, lyrics, and essays, all with the same light touch of gentle satire. He is best known as the creator of the irredeemably dim and unflaggingly affable Bertie Wooster and his invincible valet Jeeves, but Wodehouse also produced multi-volume story cycles on Blandings Castle, Mr. Mulliner's extended family, Mike and Psmith, the Oldest Member, Uncle Fred, and the Drones Club. (All this is in addition to his many stand-alone novels, short stories, and plays.) Throughout his stories, Wodehouse presents a view of the world which differs from his fans would say, improves upon the focus most people have. For a variety of reasons, pigs, newts, and statues of the Infant Samuel at Prayer play significant roles in the Wodehousian view, while such things as death, taxes, and work are crowded towards the O. P. wings. The intent of this site is to provide a set of links to those sites on the World Wide Web that, in one way or another, stand with Wodehouse as he surveys the world.

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse ("Plum" to his family and friends, who pronounce his surname "wood-house") wrote some of the most entertaining novels, stories, plays, lyrics, and poems of the twentieth century, and created enduring characters that millions would like to call their friends. His may well be the longest professional career of any author: his first story was published in 1901, when he was nineteen; he continued to write until the day of his death at ninety-three, in 1975. For three-quarters of a century, on both sides of the Atlantic, he worked to craft and polish an inimitable style that appeals to nearly everyone, with brilliantly devised farcical plots and a witty use of language that seems to have been tossed off without a care. But his work has rightly been compared to Mozart's music and Fred Astaire's dancing: it seems simple and effortless because so much behind-the-scenes work went into its preparation. Many fans of Wodehouse have prepared Web sites with information on his writings and career. You can find links to them by a
