Winthrop, John, 1638-1707 (Fitz-John Winthrop), 1638-1707, American colonial governor of Connecticut, b. Ipswich, Mass.; son of John Winthrop (1606-76). He is commonly called Fitz-John Winthrop to distinguish him from his father and his grandfather. He left Harvard to serve in the English parliamentary army, returned to America in 1663, and served in King Philip's War (1675-76). He was a member of the council of Gov. Edmund Andros , but after the latter's overthrow he helped restore Connecticut's separate government. After serving as commander of the unsuccessful invasion (1690) of Canada in King William's War, he represented Connecticut in England from 1693 to 1697 and was elected governor in 1698. He served ably until his death. See R. S. Dunn, Puritans and Yankees (1962, repr. 1971).

Winthrop, John (1588-1649) , American colonial administrator of Massachusetts, born in Edwardstone, West Suffolk, England, educated at the University of Cambridge, and trained for the law at Gray's Inn, in London. In 1623 he was appointed to the lucrative position of attorney in the court of wards and liveries, but he lost that post in 1629, probably because of his Puritan beliefs and associations. Later in 1629 the Massachusetts Bay Company in London selected him to govern its colony in New England. With some 700 Puritan settlers, Winthrop sailed from Yarmouth in March 1630, and landed at Salem, Massachusetts, on June 12. Shortly thereafter he settled in the Shawmut Peninsula community, later renamed Boston.

The Winthrop Papers project is intended to continue the publication of historically significant papers relating to the Winthrop family. Winthrop materials in the collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society include a range of correspondence, commonplace books, printed works, maps, legal documents, portraits, artifacts, and photographs spanning the family's history from fifteenth century England to twentieth century America.
Publication of the modern edition of Winthrop Papers began in 1929 and has to date resulted in the issuance of six volumes of family correspondence down to the year 1653. Under the current editorship of Dr. Francis J. Bremer of Millersville University future publication plans include
    • continuation of volumes of correspondence that will conclude with the period of the American Revolution. Editing of the next volumes in this series is being undertaken by Dr. Mark Peterson of the University of Iowa and Dr. Alison Games of Georgetown University.

    John Winthrop's "Experiencia"
This version of John Winthrop's "Experiencia" is taken from the edition in Winthrop Papers , Volume I and Volume II. In those volumes the text is broken into chronological fragments whereas here it is printed intact as the single document it was. The text in the Winthrop Papers is taken from the version in Robert C. Winthrop's Life and Letters of John Winthrop . The original has not been available since it was used by Robert C. Winthrop. Given that his transcription included some modernization and that the original is not available for comparison, for this edition the spelling has been modernized, abbreviated names expanded, and some punctuation added where necessary to improve the sense. It is impossible to believe that Robert C. Winthrop, careful searcher for and custodian of the family papers, would have allowed this manuscript perhaps second only to the Governor's Journal to become lost. It was not given to the Massachusetts Historical Society. Most likely it was among the papers that he willed to his son, Robert C. Winthrop Jr. Upon the death of Robert C. Winthrop Jr, his widow donated 43 folio and other volumes to the MHS to be housed in the "Winthrop Cabinet". When the first volume of the Winthrop Papers was being prepared, the editor, Worthington C. Ford, wrote to Mrs. Winthrop seeking a number of manuscripts that R. C. Winthrop Sr. had used and read to the Society from but which had not been given to the Society. His editorial note indicates that the "Experiencia" was not found, though in a letter to Mrs. Winthrop in April 1922 he indicates that he did have a chance to look at a "curious manuscript volume." In 1943 Allyn B. Forbes wrote to Miss Clara B. Winthrop on behalf of the Society, requesting any additional manuscripts (in particular the "commonplace book" of Adam Winthrop). Miss Winthrop lent some materials to the Society and more came from her estate following her death, yet in none of these transactions is there reference to the manuscript volume of John Winthrop's religious "Experiencia" which Robert C. Winthrop had when he prepared his biography of his ancestor.

However, his birth is recorded in Boston. Ipswich, then known as Agawam, had just been established in the Massachusetts wilderness in 1633. Fitz-John, along with several sisters and a brother, Wait Still, were born into an illustrious family. Their grandfather, John Winthrop, Senior, was the first governor of Massachusetts; their talented and well-known father, John Winthrop, Junior was a physician, served in the Connecticut General Assembly, and was himself Governor of the Colony of Connecticut for eighteen years (1657, 1659-1576). John Winthrop, Junior, was a successful man, and his support and advice were in great demand. He was frequently away from home, sometimes for long periods of time. His changes in career and projects caused the family to move several times in Fitz-John's early years, from Ipswich to Boston to New London. By the fall of 1646, when Fitz-John was about eight, the family had settled at Winthrop's Neck on the Thames River in the New London area.

    by John Winthrop
[In 1645, while he was deputy-governor of Massachusetts, John Winthrop and his fellow-magistrates had interfered in a local election of a militia officer. When the dispute flared into a war of words, the magistrates bound over some of the dissidents to the next court and summoned others to appear. In this controversy the magistrates were accused of having exceeded their powers, and Winthrop was impeached. After a controversy of almost three months Winthrop was fully acquitted and some of his opponents fined. It was after this test and vindication that Winthrop made his famous "little speech" here quoted.] For the other point concerning liberty, I observe a great mistake in the country about that. There is a twofold liberty, natural (I mean as our nature is now corrupt) and civil or federal. The first is common to man with beasts and other creatures. By this, man, as he stands in relation to man simply, hath liberty to do what he lists; it is a liberty to evil as well as to good. This liberty is incompatible and inconsistent with authority and cannot endure the least restraint of the most just authority. The exercise and maintaining of this liberty makes men grow more evil and in time to be worse than brute beasts: omnes sumus licentia deteriores.
