"If there is a single person at the nexus of fantasy literature . . .
it is Terri Windling—as editor, as writer, as painter, as muse."
Terri Windling
writer, editor, and artist
Devon, England
and Tucson, Arizona
Terri Windling is a writer, folklorist, and consulting editor for Tor Books in New York City. She is best known for her editorial work in the field of fantasy literature, where she has long been a passionate advocate of mythic fiction. She has published over forty books, including The Wood Wife (a mythic novel set in contemporary Tucson, Arizona), The Winter Child (a picture book with artist Wendy Froud), the six-volume Snow White, Blood Red series (literary fairy tales for adult readers) and The Armless Maiden Year's Best Fantasy and Horror volumes (with horror editor Ellen Datlow). Her essays on myth, fairy tales, and art have appeared in Realms of Fantasy magazine, and in books including

by Terri Windling "The Artist’s Dream" by John Anster Fitzgerald "The acceptance and rapid growth of fairyland as a fit subject matter for literature, painting, and the stage from the 1820s to the 1840s and its survival until at least the First World War is one of the most remarkable phenomena of 19th-century culture," writes Michael Booth in Victorian Spectacular Theatre about an aspect of English history that is little discussed today. Paradoxically, although it was during Victorian times that fantasy and fairy tales became firmly associated with childhood, it was also a time when adult interest in the subject could not have been higher. In previous Forum and Gallery columns, we looked at the Pre-Raphaelite writers and painters of 19th century England; in this article, we’re going to explore the broader world of magical arts during the same time period. (You’ll also find a selection of Victorian Fairy Paintings in the Gallery of this Web site. )
entirely disappear from literature Pope’s Rape of the Lock and Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels were both popular 18th-century texts; yet these were satires, poking fun at the conventions of folk and fairy tales; the magic in them was rationalized as allegory, and distanced by humor.

by Terri Windling
"A Spanish Gypsy"
"Hush ye, hush ye, dinna fret; the Black Tinker winna get ye yet," goes one old Scottish lullaby, echoing the fear with which Gypsies ("Tinkers," "Travelers," or "Rom") have long been regarded. Like other groups of cultural outsiders, superstitions about the Gypsies abound: accused in centuries past of witchcraft, child theft and cannibalism, today they are still disparaged as fundamentally shiftless, crafty and dishonest. To some extent, this portrayal holds a kernel of truth if one judges by gadjo (non-Gypsy) values for Gypsies prize the enjoyment of life, family ties and group loyalty over such " gadjo foolishness" as a life of hard work for the sake of wealth. And while Gypsy ethics dictate fair treatment and honesty among themselves, tricking the gadjo out of a bit of hard cash is another matter . . . often (to people with few other trades open to them) a matter of survival.
A less flattering tale, related by the famously fatalistic Rom themselves, tells how a Gypsy blacksmith forged the nails that were used to crucify Christ. For this sin, his descendants were condemned to wander the earth, friendless and homeless. Their life ever after was that of the road, which they traveled in bands, or in family groups. Some lived in the traditional horse-drawn, painted caravans ( vurdon ), others wandered the countryside on foot, carrying their belongings, tents and children upon their backs. Some had huts or permanent camps to live in during the cold winter months but the Gypsy ideal was the freedom of the road, and a bedroll beneath the stars.

He conjectures that the famous Welsh "Battle of the Trees" (a group of ancient poems preserved in the 16th-century manuscript "The Romance of Taliesin") refers to a druidic battle of words rather than a literal battle of vegetation. Ever since Graves's lengthy reconstruction of the poem was published in 1948, mythic scholars have been arguing whether Graves's scholarship is divinely inspired or completely mad (a question one could also ask about the mythic poet Taliesin himself).

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to compile a volume dealing with the best of the fantasy and horror genres for the year 1999. Not only must you pick out the best short fiction of the year, you must also provide rundowns and wrap-ups of the genres as applied to movies, television, magazines, the Internet, comic books, music, and more. "You may pick additional members of your team as necessary. Assistant editors Richard and Mardelle Kunz. Library scout Bill Murphy. The noted artist Thomas Canty. Editor/packager James Frenkel. St. Martin's editor Gordon Van Gelder. The folks at Endicott Studio "We predict you'll need a large team to properly carry out your mission. "As always, if you or any of your team are captured or killed, SFWA will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This contract will self-destruct in five seconds." Every year, editors Terri Windling and Ellen Datlow scour the globe to bring us the best examples of fantasy and horror fiction. This volume of their annual quest is lucky number thirteen, and most assuredly doesn't disappoint.

From my Devon village in the west of England it is a short drive through winding green lanes to the once-independent kingdom of Cornwall a land filled with ancient Celtic ruins and ancient stories. On a recent day near the summer solstice, I went to Cornwall on a morning's journey with Wendy Froud, seeking the magic that lies beneath the surface of the rolling hills: water magic, pooled in crumbling holy wells and sacred springs . . . and found in the myths and legends of cultures all around the world.
Inside the tiny chapel-like building erected over Dupath Well, the holy water pools in a shallow trough carved from a single granite slab. The air feels thick, heavy with shadows, with silence, with the ghosts of men and women drawn to this spot for hundreds of years. The stones are worn where they once knelt and prayed to the Virgin Mary, or to the Goddess of the Sacred Springs. At the bottom of the trough lay a few copper coins a modern custom of making wishes not so very different from the pagan practice of throwing pins into a well to ask for blessings. I watched as Wendy placed an offering of wildflowers by the water an equally ancient practice recalling a time when it was the land itself our ancestors worshipped, prayed to, and thanked for the gift of life.
Many cultures associate water with women: with the Goddess, or several goddesses, or a variety of female nature spirits. The Kung bushmen of Botswana attribute the origin of water to women, granting them special power over it. All-mother, in an Aboriginal myth from northern Australia, arrived from the sea in the form of a rainbow serpent with children (the Ancestors) inside her. It was All-mother who made water for the Ancestors by urinating on the land, creating lakes, rivers and water holes to quench their thirst. The "living water" (running water) of springs and natural fountains is particularly associated in ancient mythological systems with women, fertility and childbirth.
