Excerpts from WILLIS WATCH A report of my historical observations of the career of Constance Elaine Trimmer Willis from 1981 to 2000 (Old Style). Time Drop Project Balliol 22846, funded by a grant from the Williamson Institute for Advanced Literary Studies. Mr. Dunworthy, I am calling this report WILLIS WATCH because it's supposed to a record of my encounters with Connie. I'm sorry that I have not been able to communicate sooner. I know that there were many at the history lab who questioned the wisdom of sending an English major back in time. I suppose it is possible that a trained historian might have been more efficient about negotiating his way through the late twentieth century. But rest assured, all is well. My practicum is underway and I feel confident that it will be a success. To begin: I have been able to establish a new identity in this transitional time period. I know it is hard to believe, but I have become a science fiction writer. I must say that it is very difficult to make up lies about the future. However, I have found that if I write what I know about the twenty-first century, it doesn't seem to sell. The readers of this period are strangely obsessed with computers. Why not vacuum cleaners? Or electric toothbrushes? In any event, by assuming the identity of one of her fellow science fiction writers, I have been able to befriend Connie Willis without raising undue suspicion. ... so she invited me to critique early drafts of her novels Lincoln's Dreams (1987) and Doomsday Book (1992) in manuscript. Imagine my excitement at having the opportunity to shape these wonderful books, which I had first read as an undergraduate at the University of Mars at Robinson. What surprised me was how close these drafts were to the actual texts the world has come to know and love. I must confess, Mr. Dunworthy, that in a weak moment, I did suggest to Connie that she change the setting of Doomsday from the time of the Black Death to the time of the Great Dinosaur Extinction. In fact, I actually had her convinced that this would make Doomsday a much more commercial book. However, at the last moment I told her she had better stick with the plague. You see, I was afraid that by changing literary history I might strand myself forever in this backward era.
