Penelope Williamson hat sich auf solch etwas schwülstige historische Schinken spezialisiert und beglückte ihre Fangemeinde zuvor mit Titeln wie "Wege des Schicksals" oder "Wagnis des Herzens". Nun kommt "Flammen im Wind" und handelt über den Mord an einem reichen Anwalt und die Verwicklungen, die daraus entstehen. Die sind natürlich zahlreich, schließlich spielt die Geschichte in den Südstaaten der 1920er Jahre, und der Mann ist mit einer Machete getötet worden. Es geht also um Rassismus, Liebe zwischen den Hautfarben, aber auch um Alkoholschmuggel, Bandenkriege und der schmachtenden Stimme des Blues. Ein Buch wie eine Southern Comfort-Reklame. Davon gibt es viele, vielleicht zu viele. Aber der Markt für solche Schmachtwälzer zwischen Rachegelüsten, spannenden, wenn auch vorhersehbaren Handlungsabläufen und reichlich Leidenschaft scheint groß zu sein. Man muss es Williamson zum Guten halten, dass sie auf ihrer Ebene historisch fundiert schreibt (sie studierte Geschichte und Journalismus) und ihre "Flammen im Wind" nicht so langweilig dahinbrennen, wie es auf den ersten Blick scheinen mag. Vor allem Frauen, an diese Lesergruppe richtet sich auch der vorliegende Roman, dürften an der emotionalen, hitzigen Erzählung Gefallen finden.
