Biographical sketch
William Carlos Williams was born on September 17, 1883, in Rutherford, N.J., and died March 4, 1963, in Rutherford. The son of William George and Raquel Helene (Hoheb) Williams, Williams received an M.D. from University of Pennsylvania in 1906, and did postgraduate studies at University of Leipzig. He is considered to be one of the finest American poets of his generation. A man of various talents, he was a novelist, playwright, editor, essayist, and practicing physician. Williams' poetic expression was more natural than the poetic style established by Eliot. Among the numerous awards he received over the years was the Pulitzer Prize in poetry for Pictures From Brueghel in 1963. Among his poetic works are: The Tempers Sour Grapes The Collected Poems of William Carlos Williams, 1906-1938 Paterson The Clouds The Desert Music and Other Poems (1954), etc. He also wrote: The Great American Novel A Voyage to Pagany (novel, 1928);

Publicity for the Self
Daniel Morris
The Writings of William Carlos Williams "is lucidly written and coherently argued. Learned, insightful, and readable, the book will provide an important perspective on Williams's evolving career and indeed the conditions in American culture in which modernism arose. Morris places Williams in the context of humanistic criticism and gives Williams's fictions a modernist perspective. His book on Williams is an important contribution to understanding that figure both as a product of his culture and as a unique voice."Daniel R. Schwarz In The Writings of William Carlos Williams, Daniel Morris examines the previously neglected fiction written throughout Williams's career to explore the extreme shift in his poetry from the impersonal early lyrics to Paterson, the ultimate celebration of the poet as modernist cultural hero. With close textual analyses of Williams's writing in a variety of genres, including lyrics, short stories, novels, essays, and his epic poem, Morris demonstrates that Williams consciously shaped his identity as a public writer able to provide an unacknowledged social group with the dignity of appearance in distinguished classes of representation such as the modern poem. By examining the style of William's writing, as well as the narrative constructions of his persona as a capable manager of American technologies, medical sciences, economic practices, and language resources, Morris shows how Williams, over a thirty-year period, created a metanarrative that presented him as a figure situated between "elite" and "popular" forms of American culture. He also analyzes reviews of Williams's books that appeared with frequency in

Biography of William Carlos Williams
Born in Rutherford, New Jersey, near the city of Paterson, William Carlos Williams studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. There he became friends with Ezra Pound and Hilda Doolittle (later known as H. D.) and started to think of his medical career as a means of supporting himself while he composed poetry, even as he interned in New York City and pursued postgraduate studies in Germany. Williams made Rutherford his lifelong home and practiced medicine until he retired, writing at night and spending weekends in New York City with other writers and artists. Williams consciously wrote poetry that provided a counterpoint to that of Frost Pound , and Eliot. In his work, he wished to speak like an American within an American context of small cities, immigrants, and workers. He wanted his poetic line to reflect the rhythm of everyday speech and drew his subject matter from ordinary surroundings a painting, a red wheelbarrow, a dish of plums. Williams's collections include Spring and All (both poetry and prose; 1923);

AMERICA IN TRANSITION
THE POETIZATION OF THE NEW JERSEY INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE
WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS
The quick short strokes of the poetry by William Carlos Williams push
against the page like the flashing scenes of a commuter train heading into
Manhattan. He wrote about the unseen America behind the Life Magazine
promotional photos of America. His glimpses into America were from the
point of view of a writer who had the whole race and class potpourri right
in the New York area. The world of tenement immigrants he would see, in
both his medical practice and writer's eye, was a continuation of his
child's life with his Puerto Rican mother and English father. Both of his parents came to the United States at the turn of the century but never fit into traditional America. A father always traveling to Central America and a mother lost in a world of seances probably encouraged William Carlos Williams to reach out and to explore. He didn't have to travel far to discover the deversity of humanity at the edge of Rutherford, New Jersey (Mariani, p.
