February 7, 1867-February 10, 1957 Author of: The Little House in the Big Woods, Farmer Boy, The Long Winter, These Happy Golden Years , Etc. I was born in the Little House in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. From there, with my parents and sisters, I traveled in a prairie schooner across Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas, and into Indian Territory, where we lived in the Little House on the Prairie. Then traveling back to western Minnesota we lived for several years on the banks of Plum Creek. From there we went West again, to the shores of Silver Lake in Dakota Territory. We lived in De Smet, the Little Town on the Prairie, and I married Almanzo of Farmer Boy, just as I told in These Happy Golden Years After our marriage Almanzo and I lived for a while in the little gray house on the tree claim. Then with our little daughter, Rose (now Rose Wilder Lane, the author), we went to live in the piney woods of Florida, where the trees always murmur, where the butterflies are enormous, where plants that eat insects grow in moist places, and alligators inhabit the slowly moving waters of the rivers. But at that time and in that place, a Yankee woman was more of a curiosity than any of these. At last, in 1894, we came to the Ozarks. There is no other country like the Ozarks in the world. This land is the very oldest land on this continent. It rose long ago from the sea and was a lonely island while all the rest of North America was still under the ocean. The island then was an almost flat slope of drying mud and of sea sand pressed into flat sandstone, and nothing lived on it but little sea-slugs and snails that died when the mud dried. Almanzo still finds their shapes molded in the rocks, and sometimes their small curled shells.

Laura Ingalls Wilder
American writer "It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures and to be cheerful and have courage when things go wrong." Introduction Laura Ingalls Wilder is best known for her series of well-loved children's books. It was at the age of 65 that Wilder published her first book entitled Little House in the Big Woods. This first book and those to follow tell a near autobiographical tale of her own childhood. Her life as a pioneer girl is told from the perspective of a child and it is in this voice that she is able to communicate her early life so successfully to the children who continue to read her stories. Father's influence Early education Wilder's schooling was sporadic. She attended several different schools in her youth. Each move of her family meant she would have to start her education again in a new setting and often times no school was yet available. Her father, however, had made the promise to her mother that the children would receive a consistent education. The schooling she did receive took place in one-room school houses beginning with the Barry Corner School in Pepin, Wisconsin, when she was four. In 1880, when Wilder was 13, she finally found some regularity in her schooling. After her father had made the decision to stay put for a while, she and her sisters were able to attend the school in De Smet. Her formal education continued in De Smet until she was 16, although she never graduated.

    Burr Oak, IA
National Historic Site : This nationally recognized landmark is the only childhood home remaining on its original site. Her little house books have thrilled children and adults alike with tales of pioneer life since 1932. The "missing link" in her series of books was the year she spent in Burr Oak and comes between her stories of "On the Banks of Plum Creek" and "By the Shores of Silver Lake". Burr Oak - Ingalls History The Masters Hotel: During the early 1900's, the hotel was used as a private residence and was transferred from owner to owner for many years. In 1973, after it was discovered that the Ingalls family had lived there, private citizens purchased the building for $1500. Renovations were begun and three years later, in July 1976, ribbon cutting ceremonies were held to officially open it as a museum. Laura Elizabeth Ingalls was born February 7, 1867, in a little house in the Big Woods near Pepin, Wisconsin. She was the second daughter born to Charles and Caroline Ingalls. Laura and her family moved several times throughout her childhood, which provided her with information and adventure for her books. She started writing these books when she was 65 years old. Laura and Almanzo Wilder lived on Rocky Ridge Farm in Missouri until their deaths. Almanzo died in 1949 at the age of 92. Laura died three days after her 90th birthday in 1957. They are buried in Mansfield, Missouri

Probably partially as a result of the cross country road-trips my family took every summer, I disovered and devoured Little House on the Prairie and all the other books by Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder. These were definitely my favorite books for a number of years; I even made my dad take a little detour to De Smet , South Dakota, and on another trip we stopped in Mansfield, Missouri where Laura lived most of her adult life.

On February 7 , 1867, Laura Elizabeth Ingalls, the author of the beloved semi-autobiographical Little House series, was born in Wisconsin , the second daughter of Charles and Caroline Ingalls. The basic facts of her life correspond to those related in her books about her family's experiences on the American frontier during the 1870's and 1880's. The Northern Great Plains, 1880-1920 collection contains many images of families similar to the Ingalls who pioneered the settlement of the Dakota Territory . The image below is not of the Ingalls family, but the father and four daughters pictured are reminiscent of Pa Ingalls and his four girls, Mary, Laura, Carrie, and baby Grace. Laura's three sisters, her parents, "Ma" and "Pa," their good dog Jack, her school friends in the little town on the prairie, and her courtship and marriage to Almanzo Wilder are all well-known to her readers.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867 in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Reflecting the pioneer spirit of the era, Laura's family moved several times throughout her childhood, living for periods in Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota. Life on the frontier was difficult, and Laura's family experienced many hardships that threatened their survival. For example, grasshoppers destroyed their crops two seasons in a row, and a winter of continuous blizzards threatened their supplies. Laura's brother died nine months after his birth, and Laura's sister Mary lost her eyesight at the young age of 15 because of a stroke. The lessons of life on the prairie in America's heartland made a lasting impression on Laura. Laura and her sisters attended nearby schools during their childhood, and Laura's love for learning sparked her interest in teaching. At age 15 while living in De Smet, South Dakota, Laura earned her teaching certificate. In a rural area just twelve miles from De Smet, she began her first teaching job. During this time, she met and married Almanzo Wilder.
