'The Intuitionist' by Colson Whitehead Debut reaches lofty heights of imagination Sunday, April 04, 1999 By Owen McNally, The Hartford Courant The Intuitionist By Colson Whitehead Anchor Books
Ultra-super elevators reign over the Gotham-like metropolis Colson Whitehead has invented as the setting for his brilliant debut novel, “The Intuitionist,” an allegory soaked in satire, film noir and barbed commentary on racism and corporate greed in modern America. Whitehead has stocked his urban fantasia with a fast-moving plot line featuring a detective story, a touch of Alfred Hitchcock and a sci-fi tale. And his story is filled with echoes of the sort of magical mystery elements that make Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man” one of the great novels of the 20th century. But Whitehead is no Ellison clone. He is a master builder in his own right who has created a dark, fascinating world, an urban jungle with a 1950s ambience populated with corporate and labor thugs wed in an unholy alliance. Mighty white elevator barons are ensconced at the top executive suite. At the bottom are black people who toil in a void, where all they ever derive from the elevator-driven economy is the shaft.

Colson Whitehead Wins NYPL Young Lions Fiction Award
Books > Awards John Henry Days (Doubleday). The book draws parallels between the Industrial Age and the publicity-driven Digital Age by juxtaposing the legend of the black laborer John Henry, against the life of a freelance Internet journalist. The $10,000 Fiction Award honors a novel or collection of short stories published within the calendar year by an American author age 35 or younger. The award was established by the Young Lions, a membership group for supporters of the Library in their 20s and 30s. In accepting the award, Whitehead thanked his mother, his wife, and his editor and also acknowledged the role of libraries in his work, taking advantage of the opportunity to jokingly request amnesty for some of the overdue books still in his possession which he used to research his novel.

Title: John Henry Days
Author: Colson Whitehead
Description: Hardcover
Publisher: Doubleday
Year Published: Edition: 1st Edition Book Condition: New Book ID (sku): Price: 24.95 add to your cart >>> With this second novel from the author of last years critical and popular success, The Intuitionist, Colson Whitehead solidifies his reputation as one of America's finest young writers. John Henry Days takes place over the course of a weekend in the small West Virginia town of Hinton, during the celebrations accompanying the release of a John Henry commemorative stamp. The myth of John Henry means many things to many people (he was the railroad worker who raced a steam-powered drilling machine and won, then died moments later from exhaustion on the tracks) and the complex relationship between the human spirit and technology is explored from every angle in this work. Told with humor and compassion, John Henry Days is brimming with colorful characters and their wildly digressive narratives, and is a novel in the same rank as Chabon's Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay or DeLillo's Underworld.

Young Lions Fiction Award Goes to Colson Whitehead for a Book Sense 76 Pick March 21, 2002 On March 20, at a ceremony held at the New York Public Library, author Colson Whitehead was honored with the Young Lions Fiction Award [YLFA] for his novel John Henry Days (Doubleday). Established in 2001, YLFA awards a $10,000 prize to a writer age 35 or younger for a novel or a collection of short stories. Remarkably, this year, all the nominees for YLFA were also Book Sense 76 picks. John Henry Days was a July/August Book Sense 76 pick.
John Henry Days New York Times Book Review and the Washington Post Book World
It also received a thumbs-up from independent booksellers. "Absolutely first-rate," said Kevin Ryan, of Green Apple Books in San Francisco, about John Henry Days in the July/August Book Sense 76. "A complex, yet highly entertaining (and occasionally hilarious) yarn … that explores the effects of technological revolutions on the souls and bodies of two black men."
Other finalists for YLFA were

Understanding Why Plagiarism Matters
For more information on why plagiarism is treated so seriously in the university, consult the Plagiarism Web Site: www.library.wwu.edu/info/plagiarism.html People in universities-students and teachers, especially—can only do their work in the atmosphere in which ideas are freely exchanged and the evaluation of intellectual effort is not clouded by suspicions about where it came from. Just as students have some claim to the right to be told the truth in the classroom by teachers who know what they are talking about, teachers have a right to assume that work submitted under a student’s name is indeed the product of the student’s honest effort. All original insight in a scholarly community occurs in the context of the creative work of other people. As Sir Isaac Newton observed when he wrote to Robert Hooke, “If I have seen further [sic] . . . it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants” * A paper with a comprehensive bibliography shows that the writer is conversant with the intellectual context in which he or she is operating.

John Henry Days by Colson Whitehead (Doubleday, 389 pages). It's entirely fitting that this novel about media hype should have garnered
so much of its own hype.
No less a literary giant than John Updike wrote about it in the May 7 New
Yorker and John Henry Days has been reviewed in Time magazine, The Wall
Street Journal and in all the major book reviews. This is a great deal of
attention for a novel covering a three-day 1996 festival-a real one-in
Summers County, West Virginia.
The novel's central figure is black free-lance writer J. Sutter, part of a
traveling band of journalists who cover public relations media events all
across the nation. Media outlets-newspapers, magazines, Internet sites-using free-lancers easily skirt ethical considerations about free travel, food and lodging-enabling them to look more ethical than they are.
