Alan Warner,
These Demented Lands
(Anchor, 1998)
Let me warn you right from the start: These Demented Lands is no fantasy novel, at least, not in the typical sense of the word. Rather, Alan Warner's second novel (a sequel of sorts to his highly praised first novel Morvern Callar ) is a manic, eerie and sometimes hilarious foray into the postmodern literary landscape. However, Warner's characters possess an archetypal quality that lends a dark, post-apocalyptic fantasy feel to the novel. Narrated by Morvern, the book opens with a sinking ship off the coast of an unnamed island. Morvern swims to shore, hauling a small girl with her. Once the girl is safely home, Morvern begins the long, strange trip across the island. Rumors about the other passengers on the ship and newcomers to the island (like Morvern herself) circle the island like hungry seagulls. News soon reaches Morvern of a mysterious man known only as the Aircrash Investigator, who ransacks the island's makeshift fences and sheds for crash debris. Morvern's involvement with the investigator at the Drome Hotel, a honeymoon hotspot on the other side of the island, brings the novel to a fiery end. Warner's novel has one of the strangest cast of characters I've ever encountered: a DJ determined to throw the biggest rave the island has ever seen, a cigar-smoking fat man who assesses candidates for sainthood, Brotherhood (owner of the Drome Hotel) and a myriad of other minor, though just as interesting, characters.

Alan Warner,
Morvern Callar
(Anchor, 1995; Bantam, 1997)
The success of Alan Warner's first two novels, Morvern Callar and These Demented Lands , have won him a place in the circle of young writers known as the "Scottish Beats" writers who are redefining postmodernism as we know it. Fittingly then, Morvern Callar can be called a finely executed foray into the darkest recesses of human motivation. Morvern spends her days stacking produce in a supermarket and her nights popping pills and drinks in the rave scene on an unnamed Scottish coast. One Christmas morning, however, Morvern wakes up and discovers that her live-in boyfriend has committed suicide in the middle of the living room. Morvern gets up, gets dressed, opens her presents, and goes to work. After a few nights of hardcore partying with her best friend, Morvern comes home and disposes of the body. Once that nasty bit of business is taken care of, Morvern sells her boyfriend's novel as her own, raids his bank account and goes club-hopping along the coast. It was at this point that I realized Morvern was one of the freshest characters I've seen in a while. Even though her moral code seems cold and almost inhuman, there's a quiet desperation to her search for meaning that comes out as the novel progresses. Warner's deft ear for speech and thought patterns gives us a believable voice; Morvern comes alive as the epitome of youth in the '90s.

"They’ve youth; they’ll walk it out like a favourite pair trainers. It’s a poem this youth and why should they know it, as the five of them move up the empty corridors? We should get shoved aside cause they have it now, in glow of skin and liquid clarity of deep eye on coming June nights and cause it will go...After all, what do we amount to but a load of old worn out shoes?" Kate: I feel like I’ve tasted everything in this, fucking pub." "Fair, Fair-haired girl, Why do you still go on? And I know seasons, Time passing is rough Time will tell Where we’re all going". I’m not convinced that age is such an important factor in one’s ability to live for the trip, and, despite himself, Warner’s personal vision betrays his own ageless soul. Whatever the case may be, The Sopranosshould appeal to a broad audience and is highly recommended for teachers or teachers-to-be if only for the author’s deep understanding of today’s adolescents. For anyone else who’s wondered at the speed traps and detours "responsible" living imposes on life’s journey, Warner and The Sopranosprovide the best of company. BACK to Entertainment Page

Furball as a "Ghost-Buster" This cel is from "Tiny Toons Night Ghoulery, Halloween Special". This cel does not really capture Furball's true nature as a born looser. Most of the time Furball is the victim, not the aggressor. I don't normally collect cels with characters so far "out of character" but I really liked this cel. Furball's confidence is short lived though, in the next scene, he barbecues himself to death with that ray-gun. Hey, what did you expect, it was a Halloween special.
Two Tone Town This Episode from Tiny Toons guest stared three of Warner Brothers (actually, Leon Schlesinger productions at that time) earliest characters. In the very early 30's, Foxy was as flagrant a rip-off of Mickey Mouse as the studio could get away with. The only differences were the slight points on the ears, and a bushy tail. Although drawn slightly different here, you can still see the similarities. (Click to see Foxy as he appeared in Smile Darn, Darn Ya, Smile!

Slappy and Skippy from Animaniacs The voice of Slappy is done by Producer / Writer Sheri Stoner. Skippy's Voice is done by Nathan Ruegger, son of Producer Tom Ruegger.
Slappy and Skippy at Woodstock In my opinion, Woodstock Slappy is the best of the Skippy and Slappy shorts. I tried for a few years to get a cel from this scene. Only a few were released, this is the best I could find. Skippy and Slappy are doing a "Who's on Stage" routine. (The Who are on Stage).
Another Slappy and Skippy at Woodstock.
Pinky and the Brain from Animaniacs Although they now have their own show, this cel is from Jockey for Position , originally aired as part of the Animaniacs. It took a while, but I was finally able to get both Rob Paulson's (Pinky) and Maurice LaMarche's (Brain) autographs on this piece.

Alan Warner Die Soprane

His first novel, "Morvern Callar," opens with a deadpan shocker the eponymous heroine finding her boyfriend dead on the kitchen floor after he slits his own throat proceeds through Morvern's dead-end job; her anesthetizing binges on booze, dope, music and sex; and moves on to her prowls through the rave clubs of the Mediterranean. Morvern's reaction to the suicide is vintage blank generation amoral: She disposes of the body, plunders her dead boyfriend's bank account and submits his novel to a London publisher after putting her name on it. But what makes "Morvern Callar" the best of the new Scottish writing is the inescapable sorrow of Morvern's voice. Warner has written a novel that teeters between coolly shocking hipness and a fuller, more mature sensibility. He nails the hopelessness of working-class life in the port town where Morvern lives without overdoing it or shortchanging the characters. The most touching parts of the book depict her dealings with older people: her girlfriend's gran or her own foster father. If there seems to be no generation gap here, it's because the young recognize their own fate in the wrung-out lives of their elders. The temporary escapes open to them (there's an indelible, hellish sequence detailing Morvern's package holiday to a sub-Club Med resort) only reinforce the awfulness that awaits.
