David Russell Wagoner
Hoosier Connection: David Wagoner moved to Whiting , Indiana, at the age of seven, where the industrial urban area and its desolate landscapes left a strong impression on his poetry and his views of the natural world. He attended a graduate program at Indiana University in Bloomington , and taught briefly at DePauw University in Greencastle , Indiana. Works Discussed: Dry Sun, Dry Wind A Place To Stand The Nesting Ground Staying Alive ... First Light David Wagoner was born in the small town of Massillon, Ohio, in 1926, where he lived until the age of seven, when his family moved to Whiting, near Gary, in northwest Indiana. His father worked in a steel mill, and the industrial landscape influenced Wagoner and his writings about the Midwest. After high school, Wagoner entered the Naval ROTC program at Pennsylvania State University. While there, he studied under Theodore Roethke, who would become a major influence on his career and his early writings. Wagoner graduated from Penn State in three years and began a graduate program at the University of Michigan. After one year there, he transferred to Indiana University in

WALT WHITMAN BATHING
Poems by David Wagoner When David Wagoner's last collection, Through the Forest: New and Selected Poems, was published, Harold Bloom noted that Wagoner's "study of American nostalgias is as eloquent and moving as that of James Wright, and like Wright's poetry carries on some of the deepest currents in American verse." The same could be said of Walt Whitman Bathing, in which Wagoner's poems range from the lyric to the satiric, the elegiac to the transcendental, the autobiographical to the visionary. Other comments on Wagoner's earlier works: "Wagoner has the visual acuity of his loved hawks and a lifelong absorption with living and growing things. A lovely wit and a lively intelligence inform these poems." Maxine Kumin "When Wagoner looks at something, he brings it to vivid and immediate life through an extraordinary power with a simple name: love. He is as formally various as Thomas Hardy, as playful as Dickinson, as wry as Frost." Dave Smith "A sharp-eyed, even gutsy nature poet, the deftest and tenderest of love poets, Wagoner is a verbal magician capable of surprising, sometimes crazy tours de force." X. J. Kennedy

In a Dark Time ...
The Eye Begins to See October 30, 2001 David Wagoner may not necessarily be my favorite poet, but I own eleven of his books of poetry, at least six more books than by any other poet.
Maybe it is simply because I was young and impressionable then and, no matter what he was teaching, he was as mesmerizing as Burt Lancaster in The Rainmaker . Anyone who can write lines like:
God bless me? Me be one for the cloud-capped, holy-
For showbiz, smug, sharkskinny, hog-certain, flowery Chosen
Harping for glory? Thumbs-upping glissandos on pure-gold G-strings?
could certainly hold my attention no matter what he was saying.
He saw the world in ways I, having been trapped in institutions, of learning my whole life, had never seen at 18 and 21 years of age.
Today, though, his poems probably appeal to me because they capture feelings associated with our common experiences, particularly those connected with the Northwest outdoors, as in the following poem.
Enchanted Wilderness GETTING THERE
You take a final step and, look, suddenly

Briefly, the BaBar Experiment will study CP -Violation in the system of B -Anti B heavy quark states ( i.e. , BaBar will study why matter and antimatter decay differently; this impacts on the question of why the universe is presently known to be composed primarily of matter, when matter and anti-matter were supposedly produced in equal quantities at the Big Bang). One way to visualize by analogy the idea of CP -Violation is that antimatter can be thought of as like a mirror image of matter-except that this mirror is not perfectly flat, but has small ripples in it about the size of 1 part in 10 billion, so that the image in the mirror ( i.e. , antimatter) is not exactly like the original object being reflected ( i.e.
