About Selected Poems This generous selection of Mona Van Duyn's distinguished, award-winning work spans four decades. Beginning with her classic Valentines to the Wide World (1959), encompassing the intimate voice of Bedtime Stories (1972) and the moving Letters from a Father (1982), crowned by the life-spanning Firefall Selected Poems
"Of only very few poets may it be said, 'Open this volume anywhere and you will come upon something that will delight, astonish and reward you.' Each reader will have a small list of his or her own that might answer to such a demanding standard; and if that list does not yet include Mona Van Duyn, this book, which shows the richness, elegance and range of her whole career, must infallibly be added to it."

Mona Van Duyn: Biographical Note Born in 1921 in Waterloo, Iowa, Mona Van Duyn grew up in the small town of Eldora, Iowa (pop. 3,200) where she read voraciously in the town library and wrote poems secretly in notebooks from her grade school years to her high school years. Van Duyn, Mona The Accusation
Genre Poem Keywords Catastrophe Death and Dying Empathy Human Worth ... Suffering Summary The poem begins by describing how the "uncaring earth" can destroy millions of organisms "en masse" (i.e., grasses, bacilli). The author applies this analogy to humans: how easy it is to perceive that "the more lost, the less each is worth." The author then argues the value of each individual, and how irreplaceable one is, ending with another analogy: as minute details in nature are appreciated, so should individual lives be valued.
