to be written for our learning; Grant, that we may in
such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and
inwardly digest them, that by patience, and
comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and

William Tyndale As a young man, William Tyndale is said to have promised a priest that he would eventually make it possible for a boy driving a plough to know as much of the Scriptures as did the priest. Educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, and Cambridge, William Tyndale was appalled by the ignorance of parish priests, and was persuaded by this to translate the Bible into English. The English Bible had been banned since 1480, mostly because the Wycliffe Bible had been used by the outlawed Lollards, and Tyndale wanted to produce a better translation. Rather than translating from the Latin Vulgate , as Wycliffe had, he would work from the Greek and Hebrew of the original Old and New Testaments. While he had hoped to have the support of the bishops in England, but they feared that an English translation would serve to spread Lutheran ideas; so fearful, in fact, that Tyndale soon found that his life was in danger.

Home About Us Contact Us Guestbook ... Believer In Christ Store Translations of the Bible by Wiliam Tyndale The next English version was that of William Tyndale, a native of Wales, about the year 1530. Two circumstances in his age were favorable to its enlarged circulation the invention of paper and of the art of printing. Erasmus's edition of the Greek Testament was then just published, and the Hebrew Scriptures were about the same time printed in Italy-and both were easy to be obtained.
Tyndale was a thorough scholar, and, instead of making his version at second-hand from the Latin, he took it directly from the original tongues. His English style is idiomatic and racy. Many of his renderings, through long passages, are repeated almost word for word in our present authorized version.
He is really the father of our English Bible. His successors effected many improvements in detail, but the plan and spirit of the work have been left unchange. " The peculiar genius," says Froude, "if such a word may be permitted, which breathes through it; the mingled tenderness and majesty; the Saxon simplicity; the preternaturalgrandeur, unequaled, unapproached in the attempts of modern scholars all are her, and bear the impress of one man, the English language owes its present from and the permanenceof its vocabulary.
He fixed the speech of the common people all time to come; and its rhythmic cadence, its poetic and picturesque beauty, its strong and nervous expressions, its homely and simply phrases, all appear in his work. Tyndale's printed version contained the New Testament, the Pentateuch, and the prophecy of Jonah, with a few lessons from the Prophecies; but there is good reason to believe that he left behind him in manuscript a translation of the books of the Old Testament from Joshua to 2 Chronicles, inclusive.

Martin Luther and William Tyndale on the State of the Dead. On December 19, 1513, in connection with the eighth session of the fifth Lateran Council, Pope Leo X issued a Bull ( Apostolici regimis ) declaring, "We do condemn and reprobate all who assert that the intelligent soul is mortal" (Damnamus et reprobamus omnes assertentes animam intellectivam mortalem esse). This was directed against the growing "heresy" of those who denied the natural immortality of the soul, and avowed the conditional immortality of man. The Bull also decreed that "all who adhere to the like erroneous assertions shall be shunned and punished as heretics." The decrees of this Council, it should be noted, were all issued in the form of Bulls or constitutions (H. J. Schroeder, Disciplinary Decrees of the General Councils , 1937, pp. 483, 487).
In 1516 Pietro Pomponatius, of Mantua, noted Italian professor and leader among the Averrorists (who denied the immortality of the soul), issued a [pg. 570]

William Tyndale - Heretical Blasphemer? I have recently purchased an updated edition of William Tyndale's 1534 New Testament, republished by Yale University Press in 1989, (this edition in 1995). In it David Daniell has updated much of the Old English into the modern, so as to make it easier to read today. The translation itself is claimed to remain intact and faithful to the 1534 edition. In looking it over, some interesting items have come to light. According to Mr. Daniell, the Bishop of London (Tunstall) hunted down every one of Tyndale's Bibles he could find and had them burned at St. Paul's cross. He very nearly succeeded in destroying them all, as only a dozen originals still exist today. What is not commonly known today is that much of the King James Version borrowed heavily from Tyndale's work, though he is not generally credited for it. At the time, King Henry VIII's chancellor, Sir Thomas More, had this to say about Tyndale- he calls him 'a beast', as one of the 'hell-hounds that the devil hath in his kennel', discharging a 'filthy foam of blasphemies out of his brutish beastly mouth'. Tyndale is quoted by John Foxe as follows- Master Tyndale happened to be in the company of a learned man, and in communing and disputing with him drove him to that issue, that the learned man said: 'We were better be without God's law than the Pope's. Master Tyndale, hearing that, answered him.

William Tyndale I: He was not someone who made trouble for the sake of making trouble. Neither did he have a personality as prickly as a porcupine. He didn't relish controversy, confrontation and strife. Nonetheless, he was unable to avoid it. At some point he became embroiled with many of England's "Who's Who" of the sixteenth century. Anne Boleyn, one of Henry VIII's many wives, flaunted her notorious promiscuity and Tyndale called her on it. Thomas Wolsey, cardinal of the church and sworn to celibacy, fathered at least two illegitimate children and drew Tyndale's fire. Thomas More, known to us through the play about him, A Man For All Seasons , advanced theological arguments which Tyndale believed to contradict the kingdom of God and imperil the salvation of men and women and Tyndale rebutted him bravely. William Tyndale graduated from Oxford University in 1515, and then moved over to Cambridge to pursue graduate studies, Cambridge being at that time a hotbed of Lutheran theology and Reformation ferment. As he was seized by that gospel which scripture uniquely attests, Tyndale became aware that his vocation was that of translator; he was to put into common English a translation of the bible which the public could read readily and profit from profoundly. There was enormous need for him and his vocation, as England was sunk in the most abysmal ignorance of scripture. Worse, the clergy didn't care. Tyndale vowed that if his life were spared he would see that a farmhand knew more of scripture than a contemptuous clergyman.

  • Daniell's biography is divided into five sections: "The Making of the Translator" (chapters 1-3), "Greek into English" (chapters 4-6), "Persecution and Polemics" (chapters 7-10), "Hebrew and the Old and New Testaments" (chapters 11-13), and "Martyr" (chapters 14-15). The first four chapters of the biography, which deal with Tyndale's life before 1524, are necessarily highly speculative, since what we know of Tyndale's early life can be found in a couple of pages in Foxe's Book of Martyrs , and in a page or two of Tyndale's own Preface to his translation of the Pentateuch. In these early chapters Daniell gives some background on life in late medieval Gloucestershire (chapter 1), where Tyndale was born, and on the state of theological studies in Oxford and Cambridge (chapter 2 and beginning of 3), where Tyndale studied and lived. He comments (chapter 3) extensively on the revival of classical rhetoric, and the enormous stimulus applied to it by Erasmus'

Miles Coverdale continued Tyndale's work by translating those portions of the Bible (including the Apocrypha) which Tyndale had not lived to translate himself, and publishing the complete work. In 1537, the " Matthew Bible" (essentially the Tyndale-Coverdale Bible under another man's name to spare the government embarrassment) was published in England with the Royal Permission. Six copies were set up for public reading in Old St Paul's Church, and throughout the daylight hours the church was crowded with those who had come to hear it. One man would stand at the lectern and read until his voice gave out, and then he would stand down and another would take his place. All English translations of the Bible from that time to the present century are essentially revisions of the Tyndale-Coverdale work. The best summary I know of Tyndale's writings on grace is found in C S Lewis 's English Literature in the Sixteenth Century, Excluding Drama (Oxford Up, 1954)
