Classroom Issues and Strategies
Toomer's style is difficult, especially in view of earlier African-American literature. To a large extent, Toomer abandoned the predominant naturalistic and realistic representation of the black experience to experiment with newer modernistic techniques. When they first approach these texts, students usually feel that it is well beyond their understandingthat Toomer is engaged in abstractions that are too difficult to comprehend. Have the students explore all the possibilities for a literal meaning of the metaphors and symbols. "Blood-Burning Moon" is less difficult for them because it has a traditional story line. In "Karintha," for instance, try to get them to see that Toomer is concerned with the sexual and economic oppression of women within their own communities where they should be safe from the former at least. These selections lend themselves to the visual imagination. Students may find it helpful to think of the "pictures" Toomer's images present as they read and try to understand, also, the written meanings these images present. Students respond positively to the poetic qualities of the writing, and they enjoy its visual aspects. They have difficulty interpreting the underlying themes and meanings, mainly because the language is seductive and leaves them ambivalent regarding the positive and negative qualities the writer intends to portray. It is best to lead them through one section by reading aloud in class and permitting them to use a number of methods (listening to the words, visualizing the images, etc.) to try to fathom what is going on.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Nathan Eugene Toomer was the only child of Nina Pinchback, and her husband, Nathan Toomer. Soon after his son’s birth, however, Nathan, Sr., disappeared, and Nina was forced, through economic need, to return to live with her father, Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback, who had been a controversial figure in Louisiana Reconstruction politics. She remarried in 1906 and took her son with her to New Rochelle, New York. Following her untimely death in 1909, Toomer returned to Washington and remained there until he left for college in 1914. Thereafter, intermittently, he lived for varying periods of time with his grandparents, until their deaths in the 1920s.
As a young man, Jean Toomer took a long time choosing a profession. He attended six separate institutions of higher education, but never graduated. However, even as a child, he enjoyed literature, and as early as when he lived in New York, he attempted to write. In 1919 he made up his mind to pursue a literary career.

Jean Toomer

For many, the literary renaissance in Harlem began with the publication of Cane . It was hailed as a masterpiece, as a fresh voice from a very promising young writer. This publication also brought Toomer in contact with other black intellectuals. However, his spiritual quest took him away from race issues; he studied and became converted to the spiritual thought of the Russian mystic Georgi Gurdjieff and spent his time lecturing on mystical doctrines. His racial ambivalence and involvement with mysticism could explain his inability to recapture the promise of Cane

Toomer considered himself a new type of man. He said he was mixed with "Scotch, Welsh, German, English, French, Dutch, Spanish and some dark blood." He said he was of the "human race". He spent much of his childhood in an affluent white section of Washington free of racial prejudice. Toomer went to several universities studying various subjects and working different jobs. In 1914, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin to study agriculture but he left. He entered the Massachusetts College of Agriculture but left after a short time. In , he was enrolled at both the American College of Physical Training and the University of Chicago. He studied evolution and socialism. He worked at a shipyard, a store, sold cars and directed physical education. Cane ). When the writers of the early Harlem Renaissance read Cane , they were pleasingly surprised. Jean Toomer mostly associated with progressive white writers of the late 1910s and 1920s. After writing

http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/T/toomerjean/1.h
Toomer, Jean
Toomer found this position ludicrous, especially since his olive complexion made most strangers think he was white American or French or Spanish. When he was mistaken for anything other than black, he found he was generally treated better than when people knew he had black ancestry, yet he was still the same man. Why should his thoughts and ideas be more respected when he was thought to be white? Why should his behavior be judged more harshly when he was thought to be black? Toomer didn't care to reason this blatant racism out. Instead, he rejected any classification except that of American, and like Walt Whitman, he tried to convince the rest of America that only by erasing racial prejudices could America be a true free democracy.
Of course, no one listened to Toomer. As a matter of fact, Toomer, as a writer, was all but forgotten until a resurgence of interest in African American literature occurred during the 60s and 70s. Then, Toomer's novel Cane (1923) was rediscovered and Toomer was hailed as one of America's finest African American writers, something he wouldn't have liked.
Toomer does give credit to getting in touch with his "Negro side" as the reason for the success of Cane. In the novel, which is really a collection of short stories, character sketches, poems, and songs, Toomer records the life of the poor black in Georgia. He shows how the soil, the scent of cane, and the Georgia dusk are regenerators and nurturers of the African American soul while the want of money, material positions, and sex are elements that can unbalance the soul and cause destruction. Cane is beautifully lyrical, and the language has meaning on so many different levels. It's well worth the read.
