elcome to the Tolkien Timeline! ecause so much of the focus has been on his two most famous literary works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings , J.R.R. Tolkien appears to the casual reader as nothing more than an author of fantasy literature. He was, however, a very distinguished linguist and scholar. This compilation is a chronological list of important events relating to Tolkien's life, career, and scholarly pursuits, and attempts to provide a more clear picture of this astounding man. The full bibliography explains the abbreviated references used in this document. The Pre-Tolkien Era (up to 1892) The Big Bang, dinosaurs roamed the Earth, the ice age struck, Moses parted the Red Sea, Tolkien was born. This was quite a significant era in the history of the world. The Early Years Tolkien's life, from childhood to marriage. A somewhat unhappy, disiplined time, but one which no doubt shaped the greatness of this man. The Lord of the Rings This was a very prolific time for the Oxford professor, both academically, and personally. His fantastic vision of a place called Middle-earth continued to expand, giving birth to both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings The Post-Oxford Years Tolkien continued to work on both his languages and stories, long after his retirement from Oxford, right up until his death in 1973.

I don't mean to be crass or unfeeling, but this is a Tolkien site. You can read and find out my views on the current political situation here , and I sincerely hope that my views don't make you uncomfortable or give you cause to stop visiting the Archives. I realize that many of my visitors are from outside the United States (I would say that probably 45-50% of my emails are from non-US nationals). Though you may disagree with me in principle, I'm sure we all agree on the same basic freedoms and rights of human beings, which I'm much more in favour of than any political or military stance I might also have. I'd like to give everyone a heads up on what's going to be happening to the site. As you know, I decided to hold on to the site and continue to maintain it (as best as I can) even when I move abroad. The next couple of months are going to be pretty dicey. This is my last semester at school, which means I need to concentrate on getting adequate grades to graduate. Then there's graduation itself. Almost immediately after that I'll be flying into Dublin (anyone want to meet me at the airport?). Once I'm in Ireland, I'll jump into job hunting and try and find a place to live and maybe some mates to share residence. I'll be flying from the seat of my pants at that point, so I imagine updates will be sparse, even more so than this year has given to date.
