Tocqueville, Alexis de Democracy in America . Edited and translated by Harvey C. Mansfield and Delba Winthrop. With an Introduction by Harvey C. Mansfield and Delba Winthrop. 722 p. 2000 Cloth $35.00 0-226-80532-8 Fall 2000
Paper $20.00 0-226-80536-0 Spring 2002 When it was first published last year, Harvey Mansfield and Delba Winthrop's new translation of Democracy in America was lauded in all quarters as the finest and most definitive edition of Tocqueville's classic thus farcomplete with the most faithful and readable translation to date, impeccable annotations of unfamiliar references, and a masterful introduction placing the work and its author in the broader contexts of political philosophy and statesmanship. Mansfield and Winthrop's astonishing efforts have not only captured the elegance, subtlety, and profundity of Tocqueville's original, but also give us some sense of how very essential this masterpiece continues to be. "[T]he best edition of the best book on America. . . . What we need, here at the beginning of the century, is a fresh examinationone that begins from Tocqueville's own concerns and not from our desire to use him for our political battles. Mansfield and Winthrop . . . have contributed immeasurably to that task by providing hundreds of notes identifying events, allusions, and names that are no longer familiar, and by providing an accurate and readable translation of

Tocqueville, Alexis de The Old Regime and the Revolution, Volume I The Complete Text Cloth $32.50sp 0-226-80529-8 Spring 1998 Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) is familiar to readers as the author of Democracy in America , the most-quoted book written about the United States. The Old Regime and the Revolution is Tocqueville's great meditation on the origins and meanings of the French Revolution. One of the most profound and influential studies of this pivotal event, it remains a relevant and stimulating discussion of the problem of preserving individual and political freedom in the modern world. Writing in 1851, Tocqueville showed the continuity of French political behavior and social attitudes before and after the Revolution. He discussed the dangers to political freedom posed by tendencies towards government centralization and persistent class hostility that endured from the old regime to the Revolution and beyond. A major scholarly event, this handsomely produced book will be the definitive English edition of one of the great books in modern intellectual history.

After returning from his visit to the United States (1831-1832), Tocqueville began to write his . Understanding that the political system and societal conditions that obtained across the Atlantic would become established as the general rule in most other countries, beginning with the Old World, and that the propagation of the American democratic model was inevitable, Tocqueville tried to formulate its characteristics and imagine its evolution. Tocqueville foresaw the rise of an egalitarian society based on individualism, unsettledness and isolation, which paradoxically would become more pronounced even as individuals came to resemble each other more and more: "I see an innumerable crowd of similar and equal men who compete among themselves to procure small and vulgar pleasures." ( , II 4.6) He foresaw as well the rise of a new kind of repression, neither despotism nor tyranny, but rather a "kind of servitude, ordered, mild and peaceable (...), a singular power, tutelary, all-encompassing, [acting through] a system of complicated minor rules, miniscule and uniform, which do not break the spirit but soften it, bend and direct it; it rarely forces action, but continually sets up resistance to action; it does not destroy, but prevents birth; it does not tyrannize, but inhibits, compromises, ennervates, subdues, stupefies, and ends by reducing each nation to being nothing more than a herd of timid, industrious animals of whom the government is the shepherd."
