Greek Commander and Historian
[1] The modern Greeks claim that the ancient Macedonians were Greek based on the below passage of Thucydides: "The country by the sea which is now called Macedonia... Alexander, the father of Perdiccas, and his forefathers, who were originally Temenidae from Argos" (Thucydides 2.99,3) That this myth does not prove that the Macedonians were Greek I offer the extensive study conducted by the Macedonian specialist, Professor Eugene Borza. Analyzing the Temenidae myth transmitted by Herodotus and Thucydides, in details in two Chapters, Eugene Borza - In the Shadow of Olympus p.82-83 gives the following conclusion: a) "It is clear that the analysis of our earliest-and sole-source cannot produce a consistent and satisfactory sequence of events. My own view is that there is some underlying veracity to the Mt. Vermion reference (as evidenced by the Phrygian connections), that among the Makedones a family of Vermion background emerged as pre-eminent, but that the

What we refer to as myth or legend was considered historical fact by most Greeks down into and even beyond the fifth century B.C. For example, the Homeric poems were taken seriously as an historical record of the past. Indeed, as modern archaeology has shown, there is a kernel of historical truth in the Iliad that is, a war did take place at the site of Troy in approximately the same period as was assigned to it by legend. Nevertheless, it is clear that the overall account of the Trojan war in the Iliad is the result of imaginative embellishment of a story told again and again by generations of poets. It was not until more than two centuries after the composition of the Homeric poems that a more scientific form of history developed. Rational analysis, which had begun in Ionia with the Milesian philosophers with reference to the universe, gradually extended to include the recording of human events. Historie , the Greek word from which our word "history" is derived, means 'inquiry' and indicates the nature of this new way of dealing with the past. The recording of human events is no longer the uncritical retelling of traditional myths and legends, but an account which is the result of critical evaluation applied to what the author himself and others have seen and heard.

His family was partly Thracian. As a general in the Peloponnesian War he failed (424 B.C. ) to prevent the surrender of the city of Amphipolis to the Spartan commander Brasidas and was exiled until the end of the war. He thus had opportunity to acquaint himself with both the Athenians and the Spartans and to acquire firsthand information for his one work, the incomplete History of the Peloponnesian War. History is that of Thomas Hobbes (1629; ed. by David Grene, 1959); modern translations include those by Richard Crawley (1910, repr. 1952), Rex Warner (1954), and R. W. Livingstone (1960). CHAPTER XVII.
Sixteenth Year of the War - The Melian Conference - Fate of Melos
Athenians . Since the negotiations are not to go on before the people, in order that we may not be able to speak straight on without interruption, and deceive the ears of the multitude by seductive arguments which would pass without refutation (for we know that this is the meaning of our being brought before the few), what if you who sit there were to pursue a method more cautious still? Make no set speech yourselves, but take us up at whatever you do not like, and settle that before going any farther. And first tell us if this proposition of ours suits you.
The Melian commissioners answered:
Melians . To the fairness of quietly instructing each other as you propose there is nothing to object; but your military preparations are too far advanced to agree with what you say, as we see you are come to be judges in your own cause, and that all we can reasonably expect from this negotiation is war, if we prove to have right on our side and refuse to submit, and in the contrary case, slavery.
Athenians . If you have met to reason about presentiments of the future, or for anything else than to consult for the safety of your state upon the facts that you see before you, we will give over; otherwise we will go on.

The History of the Peloponnesian War By Thucydides Book II, Pericles' Funeral Oration In the same winter the Athenians gave a funeral at the public cost to those who had first fallen in this war. It was a custom of their ancestors, and the manner of it is as follows. Three days before the ceremony, the bones of the dead are laid out in a tent which has been erected; and their friends bring to their relatives such offerings as they please. In the funeral procession cypress coffins are borne in cars, one for each tribe; the bones of the deceased being placed in the coffin of their tribe. Among these is carried one empty bier decked for the missing, that is, for those whose bodies could not be recovered. Any citizen or stranger who pleases, joins in the procession: and the female relatives are there to wail at the burial. The dead are laid in the public sepulchre in the Beautiful suburb of the city, in which those who fall in war are always buried; with the exception of those slain at Marathon, who for their singular and extraordinary valour were interred on the spot where they fell. After the bodies have

Greatest of ancient Greek historians and author of the History of the Peloponnesian War , which recounts the struggle between Athens and Sparta in the 5th century BC. His work was the first recorded political and moral analysis of a nation's war policies.
Life
All that is certainly known (perhaps all that ancient scholars knew) of Thucydides' life is what he reveals about himself in the course of his narrative. He was an Athenian, old enough when the war began to estimate its importance and judge that it was likely to be a long one and to write an account of it, observing and making notes from its beginning. He was probably born, therefore, not later than 460perhaps a few years earlier since his detailed narrative begins, just before 431, with the events which provoked the war. He was certainly older than 30 when he was elected strategos, a military magistrate of great importance, in 424. Hence, he belongs to the generation younger than that of the Greek historian Herodotus His father's name was Olorus, which is not known as an Athenian name; Olorus was probably of Thracian descent on his mother's side. Thucydides was related in some way to the great Athenian statesman and general

PROPAGANDA FROM THUCYDIDES TO THATCHER:
Philip M. Taylor University of Leeds This lecture was the opening address to
the Social History Society of Great Britain’s conference in 1992.
Some time ago, an American information technologist discussing the potential uses of computers and inter-active television in educating children declared that an individual reading one issue of the New York Times from cover to cover today was expected to absorb more information in one sitting than someone from the time of Christopher Columbus was expected to absorb in their entire lifetime. Now he didn't say how he measured this precisely, but it seems to me that, this afternoon, I can really only assume the posture of a contemporary of Columbus who reads The Sun What I should like to do, therefore, is simply to provide an general indication of the sort of issues which will undoubtedly surface in our more specialised sessions over the next few days, and perhaps to raise a few questions for our collective deliberation. If I misrepresent the intentions of colleagues delivering more specialised papers, I can only apologise in advance. In a sense, the title of this conference is both a little too specific and a little too vague (I can talk with the title of this lecture). Rumour, News and Propaganda could all in themselves make excellent subjects for conferences as separate topics, but Rumour and News are in fact essential ingredients of Propaganda. They are, however, only two aspects, as I am sure Stephen Richards will undoubtedly show later this afternoon when he looks at the type of personality cults promoted by the Hapsburgs and that Peter Burke will reinforce when he looks tomorrow at the all embracing efforts to which Louis XIV was prepared to go in manufacturing his image as The Sun King. Whether we shall therefore be able to confine ourselves solely to rumours and news without discussing other techniques such as art and architecture, or such other key factors as the role of censorship, disinformation, technological availability and so on I very much doubt.

A Brief Textual and Stylistic Analysis of Herodotus and Thucydides
Art Madsen, M.Ed.
Transnational Research Associates
The writings of two of the most highly respected historians of Ancient Greece have been well known for more than 2400 years. Throughout the intervening centuries, since their lengthy manuscripts were originally composed, much scholarly attention has been devoted to analysis of their accounts of famous wars and battles dating from the 500 to 400 B.C. era.
In fact, Herodotus has become known as the "Father of History" in the sense that his writings preceded those of any other Western scholar who recorded historical events. He used recognized structuring techniques in his writing, unifying time, events and analytical interpretation in ways which distinguished him from mere writers of fictional literature or epic poetry. Thucydides followed Herodotus by several decades and began to further perfect historical style and content in his accounts of major events.
This brief essay, therefore, will explore in what ways these two Greek historians differed, and will analyze how two approaches, separated by a generation, may have affected the accuracy, objectivity or credibility of the writings selected for review.
A generation later, Thucydides, an Athenian by birth, unlike Herodotus who was born of Greek parentage on the Ionian Coast, seemed to emulate Herodotus in some respects, but surpassed him in other ways.
