"When the going gets weird, the Weird turn pro."
"The Edge... There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. The others - the living - are those who pushed their control as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later.
But the edge is still Out there. Or maybe it's In. The association of motorcyles with LSD is no accident of publicity. They are both a means to an end, to the place of definitions."
- HST '65
"Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era - the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run ... but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant....
History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of "history" it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time - and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened."

Trouble can come at you from any direction these days, like being chased through a crowded parking lot by a pack of vicious stray dogs, knowing they want to kill you, but not knowing why or being hit by a wing that has just fallen off a military jet plane that ran out of gas and exploded. ... The world situation has become so nervous and wrong that disasters that would have been inconceivable two years ago are almost commonplace today. They are not our fault, to be sure, but still we live in fear of them and so do professional athletes. I learned these things and many others on my recent assignment to Hawaii, where I did some special coverage of the Marathon and evaluated some of the newest Nike equipment, along with my usual public muttering, intense listening and distended body shots in the evening, when the sun sank toward Japan.... On these nights I spoke extensively with players, coaches and one University president who must confront and cope with the fears of modern athletes on an almost daily basis. My old friend, June Jones, head football coach at the state university, told me more and more of his younger players are plagued with a genuine fear of

March is a dangerous month for basketball people, and this year will be no different unless you happen to be one of the many, many thousands of American unfortunates who will be forced to watch the wild and wooly NCAA championship tournament on TV in some wind-whipped U.S. Army tent somewhere in the bleak Iraqi desert. That will be an awkward situation, at best, and the only real winners will be a large handful of terminal gambling addicts and committed basketball junkies who have hovered and lurked and functioned in the ranks of every military unit attached to every U.S. Army since Washington crossed the Delaware. Sports gambling is huge in the Army, and most people will tell you (in private) that it's a good and even healthy distraction for thousands of otherwise stress-crazed soldiers forever teetering on the brink of some hideous outburst of preternatural violence that could leave them all dying painfully. That is an adult dose of stress , folks, and I salute the poor bastards who are out there right now. I wish you people the very best of good luck, because you are going to need it.

OK, I have re-organized this page a little, I realized how cluttered it was getting. All the same stories are still here, they just might be in a different place. I would like to thank all the fans of Warren Zevon who wrote to me to tell me the story behind "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner". When I get a moment, I'll batch all these responses together as "Notes on Warren Zevon". I have been a little slack in updating this page, but hopefully I'll be a bit more dilligent. PLEASE remember to USE the FAQs before emailing about where you can write to HST, etc etc. PLEASE USE YOUR BRAINS GUYS!

THE (DR.) HUNTER S. THOMPSON RING OF GONZO
Hey folks! The ring is being discontinued for awhile. The ring will still function, it's just that no one can join. I've been to busy to keep up on it, and frankly, not a whole lot of great sites are being submitted. As well, WebRing is now owned by Geocities and Yahoo. I don't think it can stay an independent for very long. The whole fun factor has gone out of it. I won't be a pawn of Geo or Yahoo. Christine O http://www.tekknowledge.com/gonzo

Hunter S. Thompson:
The Champion of Fun
by Todd Brendan Fahey This article originally appeared in the March 1991 issue of Fling. I remember very crisply my introduction to the cult of Hunter S. Thompson. Having already broasted the front side of my body under a thin ozone layer one warm August afternoon in Santa Barbara, I traded my beach chair for a friend's towel, so I could lie on my stomach and read from an orange and blue paperback, which had him laughing so hard he could barely hit off the joint we were trying to finish before the locals came begging around. Ralph Steadman's insane sketching on the cover of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas had sucked me right into the rented fire-apple convertible, and into the giddy vortex where Dr. Thompson lives. Later that afternoon, like any obsessive-compulsive personality, I drove to Earthling Bookshop and cleaned out their supply of Thompson works, and began reading to the extent that I neglected basic human contact for as many weeks as it took to exhaust the six pieces of stone-madness. I became a True Believer, an historian, a collectormost likely a huge boreemerging from literary hibernation and bringing Dr. Thompson with me to work, to parties...home to the folks for Thanksgiving. Dad was a bit miffed. He suffered through the introduction to The Great Shark Hunt , shaking his head spasmodically, and handed the book back to me, muttering, "Well, it isn't James Michener."

Transcript of Hunter S. Thompson Interview Courtesy of The Book Report We were a little tense at The Book Report the other day. Would Hunter S. Thompson, famed author of FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and the new bestseller THE PROUD HIGHWAY really show up for his live interview? He is, after all, an unrepentant Dunhill-smoking, Patron-swilling, walking chemical laboratory whose closest friends concede can be just a tad unreliable. But Hunter said he'd come, and so he did. We agreed to let him keep his TV tuned to his beloved basketball playoffs and he delivered what he promised: some characteristically smart and funny thoughts on his new book, his writing career - and, of course, his gonzo reputation. Our interviewer was TBR Executive Editor Sara Nelson (bookpgSara), aided by producer Sean Doorly (Sdoorly). Our unflappable host was Marlene T.
Marlene T: Hello, Sara and Mr. Thompson. Good evening! Hunter Thompson: Good evening Hunter Thompson: Sorry, I'm betting on the basketball game right now. Wait a minute. I hope Utah wins, but I think Chicago will. Bookpgsara: In your new collection of letters, The PROUD HIGHWAY, edited by Douglas Brinkley, you said that you threw out 12 letters for every one that was published. When did you start saving your letters and why?

"The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.... This is the artist's way of scribbling 'Kilroy was here' on the wall of the final and irrevocable oblivion through which he must someday pass." William Faulkner , interview with Paris Review,
    August 26, 1997
What would you do? You're sitting in Hunter S. Thompson's kitchen conducting an interview and he wants you to drink. So you drink.
I'd been directed to read aloud Thompson's farewell to Richard M. Nixon, "He Was a Crook" ( Rolling Stone, June 16, 1994), an obituary fired off in a burst of rage. The author insisted it be read aloud to capture the right effect, and apparently I hadn't been reading with proper and resounding emphasis.
"No. No! Again. Start over. Clip your words!"
A glass of Wild Turkey and ice was placed in front of me for elocution purposes, of course and the reading proceeded, this time with the benefit of Thompson's coaching.
Earlier that day I'd stopped at the Woody Creek Tavern, in Woody Creek, Colorado, to order a drink and steady my nerves before heading up the hill to the house of the Gonzo Journalist and self-proclaimed King of Fun. I'd heard the last reporter who went up the hill looking for a story had to mow the lawn before the man would talk to him. I guess my luck was better. Before the night was over I heard the famous peacocks screaming in the dark. I held the Lono club. A shade before two o'clock in the morning I saw my copy of Thompson's latest book

Thompson's newly published novel, The Rum Diary Much of the material on this site was provided by the author and has never before been published. The graphic at the bottom of this page directs you to other stops on The Rum Diary Webring. The Rum Diary was begun in 1959 by then twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson. It was his first novel, and he told his friend, the author William Kennedy, that The Rum Diary would "in a twisted way . . . do for San Juan what Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises did for Paris." In Paul Kemp, the novel's hero, there are echoes of the young Thompson, who was himself honing his wildly musical writing style as one of the "ill-tempered wandering rabble" on staff at the San Juan Daily News at the time. "I shared a dark suspicion," Kemp says, "that the life we were leading was a lost cause, we were all actors, kidding ourselves along on a senseless odyssey. It was the tension between these two poles a restless idealism on one hand and a sense of impending doom on the other that kept me going."

What follows are a half-dozen, raw HST communications that established some context for the piece, including a faxed, handwritten message to long-time collaborator Ralph Steadman; four dangerous screeds to Isaacson; and a portion of a Steadman sketch. We could tell you what's in these communiques, but why bother? As the good doctor observes, "res ipsa loquitur..." Read the story: Doomed Love at the Taco Stand
