William Makepeace Thackeray
Born in India but educated in England after his father's death, Thackeray saw journalism as a way to earn money. His love of art (he spent 4 years as a student in Paris) ended due to lack of funds. On his return to London he wrote for The Times New Monthly and Frazer's Magazine . His initial publications in The Paris Sketchbook were considered a failure (and written under pseudonyms). His column in Punch (from 1842) "Jeames' Diary" was very popular as it as society seen through the eyes of the butler. Novels such as "Vanity Fair" (1847), "Pendennis" (1848), "The Newcomers" (1853) made him famous. On his retirement he became editor of Cornhill Magazine which printed his later poems and novels. He also undertook lecture tours of America and England. Read on-line Buy from Amazon.com The Adventures of Major Gahagan The Bedford-Row Conspiracy Catherine The Great Hoggarty Diamond ... Email

Calcutta, India. He is important not only as a great novelist but also as a brilliant satirist. In 1830, Thackeray left Cambridge without a degree and later entered the Middle Temple to study law. In 1833 he became editor of a periodical, the National Standard, Fraser's. As a contributor to Punch he often parodied the false romantic sentiment pervading the fiction of his day. In 1848, Thackeray achieved widespread popularity with his humorous Book of Snobs and the same year rose to major rank among English novelists with Vanity Fair, a satirical panorama of upper-middle-class London life and manners at the beginning of the 19th cent. The novel contains many fascinating characters, particularly Becky Sharp, who, although clever and unscrupulous, is also extremely appealing. His reputation increased in 1850 with the completion of the partly autobiographical novel Pendennis.

THACKERAY Miss Sharp finds so ridiculous; that it was ! who laughed good-humouredly at the railing old Silenus of a baronet—whereas the laughter comes from one who has no reverence except for prosperity, and no eye for anything beyond success. Such people there are living and flourishing in the world—Faithless, Hopeless, Charityless: let us have at them, dear friends, with might and main. Some there are, and very successful too, mere quacks and fools; and it was to combat and expose such as those, no doubt, that laughter was made." Vanity Fair was followed by Pendennis, Esmond and The Xcwcomes, which appeared respectively in 1850, 1852 and 1854. It might be more easy to pick holes critically in Pendennis than in Vanity Fair. Pendennis himself, after his boyish passion and university escapades, has disagreeable touches of flabbiness and worldliness; and the important episode of his relations with Fanny Bolton, which Thackeray could never have treated otherwise than delicately, is so lightly and tersely handled that it is a little vague even to those who read between the lines. It can hardly be said that there is adequate preparation for the final announcement that those relations have been innocent, In 1851 Thackeray had written The English Humourists of the Eighteenth Century, delivered as a series of lectures at Willis's

William Makepeace Thackeray wurde am 18. Juli 1811 in Kalkutta geboren und starb am 24. Dezember 1863 in London.

    William Makepeace Thackeray
Writer England Born 18 Jul 1811
    Died 24 Dec 1863
Thackeray was born in Calcutta but sent to England at the age of six. He was educated at Charterhouse and at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1833 he settled in Paris, after a major financial loss, and tried a career as a painter. It was here he met 19-year-old Isabella Shawe, upon whom he based many of his virtuous but weak heroines, and whom he married in 1836. A year later they settled in London, where Thackeray turned seriously to journalism. His writing for periodicals included 'The Yellowplush Correspondence', which appeared first in Fraser's Magazine and then in 1841 in book form. Around this time personal and domestic pressures caused the already helpless Isabella to subside into a state of complete and permanent mental collapse and the subsequent breakdown of the marriage formed a central part of Thackeray's consciousness.
His early work centred around rogues and villains, most famously in 'The Luck of Barry Lyndon' (1844; revised as 'The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon Esq' in 1856), and in his masterpiece, 'Vanity Fair', which appeared in monthly parts in 1847-48 and which most clearly reveals his socially satirical edge. 'The Book of Snobs', which originally appeared as a series in Punch, also attacks Victorian society with vicious wit. Thackeray's later novels include 'The History of Pendennis', (1848-50); 'The History of Henry Esmond Esq' (1852); 'The Newcomers' (1853-55); 'The Virginians', (1857-59), which is a sequel to 'Henry Esmond'; and 'The Adventures of Philip' (1860-62). He also wrote a series of lectures, 'The English Humourists of the Eighteenth Century' (1853), and numerous reviews, articles and sketches, usually in the comic vein. From 1860 to 1862 he also edited the Cornhill magazine.
