WRITINGS OF TERTULLIAN
THE ARENA, CIRCUS AND THEATRE
The question of the attendance by Christians at Sporting or Entertainment Events, or participation in, is raised from time to time. The same question is also valid about the use of the printed page, radio and T.V. for learning of these events. It is sometimes worthwhile looking at how this issue was dealt with in the past. Tertullian, circa AD160 - AD220, one of our important Christian writers, wrote on this subject in the second century, and although the circumstances have changed the principles certainly haven't. This issue has had prominence quite recently, Evangelical Christians, including 'Protestant Reformed Ministers' and Episcopal Bishops, who are also football supporters, have had to decide whether to 'go to church' (a terminology which implies considerable impropriety, when used by Christians.) or attend a football match on the First Day of the Week, known as Sunday to the Secular and Pagan society and The Lord's Day to Christians. However, the question goes much deeper. Tertullian gives us more than a clue in searching for the answer.

This property of the two statesthe divine and the humanis distinctly asserted with equal truth of both natures alike, with the same belief both in respect of the Spirit '* and of the flesh. The powers of the Spirit, proved Him to be God, His sufferings attested the flesh of man. QUINTUS FLORENS TERTULLIAN
NORTH AFRICAN DEFENDER OF THE FAITH. Tertullian was born of heathen parents in Carthage, Africa. He studied law and lived an exceedingly sinful life until he received the Lord Jesus Christ at the age of thirty. He became an intense, hard-hitting defender of the fundamentals of the Christian faith against the traditions of Romanism. He joined the Montanists, a group of pre-millenial, Bible believing Christians and spent the rest of his life writing and preaching primitive Christianity as opposed to Romanism with its ecclesiastical traditions and ceremonies contrary to the scriptures. How the Watchtower Distorts the Writings of Tertullian to Justify a Blood Transfusion Ban
Andrew W. Lusk (with Maximus and Marvin Shilmer)
On page 29 of the June 15, 2000 Watchtower , the "Questions From Readers" (herein called QFR) section deals with blood transfusions. Tertullian is quoted in the fifth and sixth paragraphs of that page. Tertullian's remarks in the QFR are found in The Ante-Nicene Fathers , Vol. IV, Chapter IX, The Apology. The Watchtower's blood pamphlet also uses similar remarks of Tertullian to support a blood transfusion ban. The quotations can be read as different versions on the Internet sites shown below. Full copies are attached in the Appendix and in bold the quotations used by the Watchtower. Note that the Watchtower has only partially presented and not correctly quoted certain sections of Tertullian's Apology, Chapter IX. The Watchtower's Reasoning book also quotes Tertullian. The Watchtower states the following: Does the Bible's prohibition include human blood? "Yes, and early Christians understood it that way. Acts 15:29 says to "keep abstaining from ... blood." It does not say merely to abstain from animal blood. (Compare Leviticus 17:10, which prohibited eating "any sort of blood.") Tertullian (who wrote in defense of the beliefs of early Christians) stated: "The interdict upon ''blood'' we shall understand to be (an interdict) much more upon

Appendix Excursus on Tertullian
Tertullian (145-220), who lived in North Africa, became a Christian in about the year 185. He was the first Christian theologian known to have written in Latin. Sometime around the year 200, Tertullian left the Church and became a Montanist. Thus, his works cannot be included in the Additional Quotations from the Fathers appendix. Montanus, a Phrygian with two female associates named Prisca and Maximilla, entered states where, they said, the Holy Spirit spoke through them. Tertullian may have been attracted to Montanism by that sect’s discipline - forbidding flight from persecution and imposing abstinences and fasts. It is unclear how, if at all, Tertullian’s conversion to Montanism altered his eschatalogical views. They seem to accord well with those expressed by Justin Martyr and Irenaeus. Notice that Tertullian rules out the equation “eternal death” equals “annihilation” - calling it absurd. He says that the punishment is “not merely long-enduring, but everlasting,” and he ascribes the power to the “secret” fire of hell to maintain the resurrected body, so that it will endure and not be consumed. If, therefore, any one shall violently suppose that the destruction of the soul and the flesh in hell amounts to a final annihilation of the two substances, and not to their penal treatment (as if they were to be consumed, not punished), let him recollect that

Chapter 3 Tertullian: Theologian
Introduction Although Paul writes to the Corinthians that the general rule of God in the church of Christ is that "not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called" (I Cor. 1:26), nevertheless, God is sometimes pleased to give to the church of Christ men of outstanding ability and great intellectual, moral, and spiritual strength, who stand as giants in the annuls of the church's history. Such a man was Tertullian. Though he is little known and though the Roman Catholic Church, with some reason, considers him a heretic and apostate, he remains a towering figure whose importance in the church stands on a par with such men as Augustine, Luther and Calvin. Much of his life has been lost in the dusty past. Only the sketchiest of details have come down to us. He was from Cathage, a city whose importance in the history of the Roman Empire is known to the youngest of school boys who have learned a bit of ancient history. The church of the third century had spread throughout the Roman Empire. It was divided geographically and nationally into two parts. The Eastern Church, including Palestine, Syria, Asia Minor, Greece, and Egypt, was basically Greek. It spoke the Greek language and possessed the speculative Greek mind. The Western Church, including Italy, Spain, Gaul, and North Africa, was Latin. It spoke the Latin language and was under the influence of the practical Roman mind with its emphasis on law. Tertullian belonged to the Western Church.

Tertullian. The Apology . Chap 22:
The philosophers acknowledge there are demons; Socrates himself waiting on a demon's will. Why not? since it is said an evil spirit attached itself specially to him even from his childhood-turning his mind no doubt from what was good. The poets are all acquainted with demons too; even the ignorant common people make frequent use of them in cursing. In fact, they call upon Satan, the demon-chief, in their execrations, as though from some instinctive soul-knowledge of him. Plato also admits the existence of angels. The Magi, no less, come forward as witnesses to the existence of both kinds of spirits. We are instructed, moreover, by our sacred books how from certain angels, who fell of their own flee-will, there sprang a more wicked demon-brood, condemned of God along with the authors of their race, and that chief we have referred to.
Tertullian. The Apology . Chap 22:
Moreover, if the Magi call forth ghosts, and even make what seem the souls of the dead to appear; if they put boys to death, in order to get a response from the oracle; if, with their juggling illusions, they make a pretense of doing various miracles; if they put dreams into people's minds by the power of the angels and demons whose aid they have invited, by whose influence, too, goats and tables are made to divine,-how much more likely is this power of evil to be zealous in doing with all its might, of its own inclination, and for its own objects, what it does to serve the ends of others!

(b. 155/160 Carthage - d. 220? CE)
Tertullian, an early Christian author and polemicist, helped to establish Latin rather than Greek, which was the most widely used language at that time as an ecclesiastical language and as a vehicle for Christian thought in the West. He coined many new theological words and phrases and gave currency to those already in use, thus becoming a significant thinker in forging and fixing the vocabulary and thought structure of Western Christianity for the next 1000 years. Because he was a moralist rather than a philosopher by temperament which probably precipitated his famous question: "What has Athens to do with Jerusalem" Tertullian's practical and legal bent of mind expressed what would later be taken as the unique genius of Latin Christianity. The life of Tertullian is based almost wholly on information written by men living over a century after him and from obscure references in his own works. On this basis a general outline of his life has been constructed, but most of the details have been continually disputed by modern scholars. Tertullian was born in Carthage in the Roman province of Africa, present Tunisia, approximately 155-160 CE. Carthage at that time was second only to Rome as a cultural and educational center in the West, and Tertullian received an exceptional education in grammar, rhetoric, literature, philosophy, and law. Little is known of his early life. His parents were pagan, and his father may have been a centurion in an African-based legion assigned to the governor of the province. After completing his education in Carthage, he went to Rome, probably in his late teens or early 20s, to study further and perhaps begin work as a lawyer.

Tertullian Dates:
Born: c. 160
Died: c. 225 Conversion to Christianity: c. 197 Biography: Although there were quite a few important people who contributed to the early development of Christianity, Tertullian is one which many people remember. A Carthaginian who converted from paganism to Christianity in 197, Tertuallian became a prolific writer and staunch defender of the Christian faith. He was very strict when it came to personal morality, which may be the reason why he fell into Montanism later in his life. One thing Tertullian became famous for was his question "What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?" In these simple words he expressed the basic distinction between faith and reason - i.e., traditional faith and traditional Greek philosophy. According to Tertullian, faith was supreme while reason and philosophy, centered in Athens, had to accept a second-class status, if any status at all.

Church History Study Helps:
Tertullian Tertullian
1. About three years after Irenaeus was chosen bishop of Lyon, in July of 180 AD, there occurred an event whose record provides our first knowledge of Christianity in the province of North Africa: the martyrdom in the capital city Carthage, of twelve believers from the town of Scillium. This event so impacted the outlook of Christianity in this region, that the area long thereafter viewed itself as a church of martyrs. This very outlook is found in the many tracts we have of Tertullian, the first Christian writer of note to use Latin, and the man who gave to Latin theology its vocabulary and basic agenda. 2. Tertullian was a convert to Christianity, a native of Carthage who probably never strayed far from home, and a man whose professional education was in rhetoric. Tertullian bursts on the scene in North Africa in 197 with the appearance of his Apology. He seems to have died around 225. In between these two dates, he published eloquent, witty and argumentative tracts on doctrine and morals which reveal him to have been a masterful debater as well as a Christian of radical and uncompromising spirit.
