The little white house where Allen Tate was born sat near Lexington Avenue in Winchester, a vibrant town in Clark County, Kentucky? Between its founding in the 1790s and Tate's birth on November 19, 1899, Winchester had grown from a cluster of several log cabins into an expanding city of six thousand residents. Although the courthouse in the middle of town was, to the chagrin of proud locals, "not gorgeous," the virgin timber, rich coalfields, and iron deposits in the surrounding bluegrass region lured businesses to the city, including sawmills, saloons, and even a music hall that featured both Shakespeare and blackface minstrels. Not long after one of the railroads crisscrossing Kentucky chose Winchester as a terminus, the adjacent hemp farms, horse ranches, and cattle ranges gave way to paved streets, electric wires, and streetcar tracks. Like many small towns in the South, Winchester was enjoying an economic boom. Though Allen sometimes found himself sympathetically recalling his father as an innocent young man whose uncle swindled him and betrayed the family by fighting against the South in the Civil War, he more frequently remembered his father as brutal and unpredictable, as someone given to explosive fits of violence, philandering, and drinking. Long after Orley's death, Allen stood in awe and terror of this powerfully fisted man, whose elegantly tailored suits and gentle blue eyes belied a volatile personality. Whenever Allen and his brothers misbehaved, he disciplined them with "the razor strap."

Despite his celebrity and his fame, a series of literary feuds and the huge volume of sources have, until now, precluded a satisfying biography of Allen Tate. Anyone interested in the literature and history of the American South, or in modern letters, will be fascinated by his life. Poetry readers recognize Tate, whom T. S. Eliot once called the best poet writing in America, as the author of some of the twentieth century's most powerful modernist verse. Others know him as a founder of The Fugitive , the first significant poetry journal to emerge from the South. Tate joined William Faulkner and others in launching what came to be known as the Southern Literary Renaissance. In 1930, he became a leader of the Southern Agrarian movement, perhaps America's final potent critique of industrial capitalism. By 1938, Tate had departed politics and written The Fathers , a critically acclaimed novel about the dissolution of the antebellum South. He went on to earn almost every honor available to an American poet. His fatherly mentoring of younger poets, from Robert Penn Warren to Robert Lowell, and of southern novelistsincluding his first wife, Caroline Gordonelicited as much rebellion as it did loyalty.

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
It may be difficult to get students without some personal investment in/against the Confederacy or at least the American South to respond initially at all to a poem that presumes the identification of classical heroism with Confederate soldiery. Watching a segment from Ken Burns's popular PBS series, "The Civil War," which made much of the lives of ordinary soldiers from both sides, might help to get past initial alienation; so might a discussion of the place of the American South in contemporary ideology, especially in popular culture. Once the distances of history and regional difference are addressedand even if they aren'tthe pairing of poem and essay makes it possible to teach close reading in an especially intimate and interesting way. Students can learn techniques of analysis from Tate's reading of his own poem, and they can at the same time sharpen their own skills by resisting specific claims of his reading. The pairing offers the opportunity as well to examine, address, and discuss the history and value of the New Criticism, of which Tate was a founder and his essay is, presumably, an example. What sorts of reading does he reject and why? What sorts does he simply fail to mention? Issues of gender and femininity in particular seem oddly and obscurely present in the essay; they invite a second look at the poem for its implicit gender stakes.

    Cleanth Brooks and Allen Tate
    Collected Letters, 1933-1976
    Edited by Alphonse Vinh
Introduction by Louis D. Rubin, Jr.
Offering all of the extant letters exchanged by two of the twentieth century's most distinguished literary figures, Cleanth Brooks and Allen Tate: Collected Letters, 1933-1976 vividly depicts the remarkable relationship, both professional and personal, between Brooks and Tate over the course of their lifelong friendship. An accomplished poet, critic, biographer, and teacher, Allen Tate had a powerful influence on the literary world of his era. Editor of the Fugitive and the Sewanee Review, Tate greatly affected the lives and careers of his fellow literati, including Cleanth Brooks. Esteemed coeditor of An Approach to Literature and Understanding Poetry, Brooks was one of the principal creators of the New Criticism. His Modern Poetry and the Tradition and The Well Wrought Urn, as well as his two-volume study of Faulkner, remain among the classics read by any serious student of literature. The correspondence between these two gentlemen-scholars, which began in the 1930s, extended over five decades and covered a vast amount of twentieth-century literary history. In the more than 250 letters collected here, the reader will encounter their shared concerns for and responses to the work of their numerous friends and many prominent writers, including T. S. Eliot, William Faulkner, and Robert Lowell. Their letters offer details about their own developing careers and also provide striking insight into the group dynamics of the Agrarians, the noteworthy community of southern writers who played so influential a role in the literature of modernism.

In 1977 Louisiana State University Press issued a revised version of Allen Tate's The Fathers which with its new ending chronicled "what George Posey did after he rode away into the dark." Short but powerfully symbolic, Tate's revision of the novel's final paragraphs to encompass the postwar period has received much attention since its appearance. However, another, less obvious textual alteration that occurred between the first printing of the novel in 1938 and its reissue by Swallow in 1960, while virtually ignored by scholars, is perhaps equally important to an understanding of Tate's novel and work. This change, which occurs in the climactic section "The Abyss," involves a brief interaction between Lacy Buchan, the novel's young protagonist, and the Posey family's reclusive uncle, Mr. Jarman.
In this scene, Lacy awakens from a dream to confront a real nightmare in the hallway of the Posey home: his sister is near mad; his brother's fiancee is unconscious, the supposed victim of rape; and the family matriarch is dead of fright. Seeking the most available haven, Lacy retreats to the apartment of Mr. Jarman, where the aging recluse engages him in a one-sided conversation about lost friends and the march of time. "Time time! Our great enemy, sir," Jarman tells Lacy in the 1938 edition. "Have you read the

Border States: Journal of the Kentucky-Tennessee American Studies Association, No. 9 (1993) ANGUISH IN A SECOND MARRIAGE:
    THE CAROLINE GORDON-ALLEN TATE LETTERS
    Eleanor H. Beiswenger
Austin Peay State University During the twenty-one-year first marriage of Caroline Gordon and Allen Tate, all who knew them believed they represented a unique combination of talents and personalities. They were a compelling pair to many writers and artists, whether the Tates were in France, New York, at Benfolly in Clarksville, Tennessee, or in Princeton. When that marriage suddenly ended in late 1945, therefore, the overwhelming response was disbelief.
Nevertheless, as they prepared to remarry, Gordon was optimistic when she wrote Tate in the spring of 1946 (letter undated) that they complemented each other almost mathematically. she observed that their friends perceived them in this special way as well. She predicted their new openness would not only permit a new beginning, but also a new fulfillment not realized by other lovers in long-term relationships.
In their new intensity of feelings, Gordon and Tate poured out their longing for each other in letters written during frequent separations: Tate on lecture and poetry-reading tours, and Gordon on lecture and teaching assignments at a variety of university campuses around the country. The letters they exchanged several times a week indicated a unique and crucial interdependence between the two. Beyond this, they regularly cabled and telephoned each other for instant communication of news.
