Arthur Sze
FROM THE ROOFTOP
He wakes up to the noise of ravens in the spruce trees. For a second, in
the mind, the parsley is already bolting in the heat, but then he realizes
the mind focusing rays into a burning point of light can also relax its
intensity, and then
he feels the slow wave of the day.
Mullein growing by the gas meter
is as significant as the portulaca blooming in pots. Ants are marching up
the vine onto the stucco wall and into the roof. From the rooftop,
he contemplates the pattern of lightning to the west, feels a nine-pointed
buck edge closer to the road at dusk, weighs a leaf and wonders what is significant, maybe the neighbor who plays the saxophone at odd hours, loudly and badly, but with such expanse. Arthur Sze's most recent book, which includes this poem, is "Redshifting Web" from Copper Canyon Press. The recipient of many grants and awards, Sze is the head of the creative writing department at IAIA in Santa Fe. A selection of poetry from his students at IAIA and the Santa Fe Public Library appears on Santa Fe Poetry Broadside, http://www.rt66.com/~sfpoetry/

Traditional Chinese Stories , this new volume presents modernist short fiction from the 30-year period leading up to the Communist revolution of 1949, after which Chinese literature entered a new phase of development.
The stories range in setting from the late Ch'ing dynasty through the Sino-Japanese War and the early Communist years, and range in length from brief tales to substantial short novels. Though a large number of the writers represented are leftists, works of all political viewpoints have been included to provide the full literary panorama of one of the most fertile periods of Chinese creative activity. An E-view with Arthur Sze
By Rebecca Seiferle
I first met Arthur Sze when we read together in a benefit reading for Amigos Bravos, an environmental group in Taos, New Mexico. At that time, he was well-known in New Mexico as a distinctive and compelling presence in the poetry of the region. He was co-publisher, with John Brandi, of Tooth of Time books, an esteemed teacher at the Institute for American Indian Arts, and the author of several noteworthy poetry collections. Since then, he has quietly and by virtue of the quality of his work become a poet of national renown. His selected poems, The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998 (Copper Canyon Press 1998), was a finalist for the 1999 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. Arthur Sze has been called one "of our best poets" by Charles Simic, and his poetry is esteemed by writers who inhabit a broad band of the poetical spectrum. His work has always been marked by a refinement of object and imagery. Rich in allusions, his poetry evinces a preference for Asian juxtaposition rather than Western rhetoric. In reading his work, while there is a sense of a distinctive voice, the quality of voice strikes the reader as a quality of mind, the subtle movements of a particular intelligence, rather than as oratorical. The Silk Dragon Translated by Arthur Sze Publisher's Note:
Arthur Sze has rare qualifications when it comes to translating Chinese: he is an award-winning poet who was raised in both languages. A second-generation Chinese-American, Sze has gathered over 70 poems that have had a profound effect on both American poetics and Sze's own maturation as an artist. His anthology features poets who have become literary icons to generations of Chinese readers and scholars. Here are the quiet nature poems of Li Ching Chao alongside the remorseful exile poems of Su Tung-p'o. Also included is an informative insightful essay on Sze's methods and processes of translating ideogramic poetry.
From the Back Cover
The Silk Dragon presents a complex vision of the vitality, diversity, and power of the Chinese poetic tradition, ranging from such great T'ang dynasty masters as Wang Wei, Li Po, and Tu Fu to pivotal contemporary poets Wen I-to and Yen Chen. Arthur Sze writes: “I have only translated poems that have deeply engaged me; and it has sometimes taken me many years to feel ready to work on one.” Although Sze calls translation an “impossible task,” his introduction nevertheless provides a unique glimpse into exactly how he translates a poem—from the first rough, literal draft to the finished poem.

Arthur Sze: "The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998"
By R.W. French In recent weeks I have been reading through the poems of Arthur Sze, resident of Pojoaque and Professor of Creative Writing at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. The poems are conveniently collected, at least through 1998, in "The Redshifting Web." This is a full and rewarding book; its 262 pages of poetry fill the mind and delight the sensuous imagination. It is also a book of compelling intellect; to summarize it in brief compass is no simple task. Fortunately, I am saved from having to make the effort, since the best introduction to "The Redshifting Web" has already - been written, by a man who-no mean feat-never read the book. That would be Henry James, who died in 1916. In "The Art of Fiction" James wrote this:
"If experience consists of impressions, it may be said that impressions ARE experience, just as (have we not seen it?) they are the very air we breathe. Therefore, if I should certainly say to a novice, 'Write from experience and experience only.' I should feel that this was rather a tantalising monition if I were not careful immediately to add, 'Try to be one of the people on whom nothing is lost!'"
Arthur Sze is no novice-far from it; he is an accomplished craftsman-but in the poems of "The Redshifting Web" he follows, in his way, James's dictum to write from experience-remembering, always, that experience includes impressions, and that impressions can be imaginative as well as sensuous. This is a poetry of extraordinary attentiveness; like Emily Dickinson, Sze finds depths of significance in the small and the ordinary. Nothing is missed, nothing is beyond notice. Consider, for example, an older poem, "North to Taos," published in "Two Ravens" (1976):

by Arthur Sze A spring snow coincides with plum blossoms.
In a month, you will forget, then remember
when nine ravens perched in the elm sway in wind. I will remember when I brake to a stop,
and a hubcap rolls through the intersection.
An angry man grinds pepper onto his salad; it is how you nail a tin amulet ear
into the lintel. If, in deep emotion, we are
possessed by the idea of possession, we can never lose to recover what is ours.
Sounds of an abacus are amplified and condensed
to resemble sounds of hail on a tin roof, but mind opens to the smell of lightning.
Bodies were vaporized to shadows by intense heat; in memory people outline bodies on walls. Arthur Sze is the author of five books of poetry: Archipelago, River River, Dazzled, Two Ravens, and The Willow Wind. His poetry has appeared in numerous magazines, including American Poetry Review , the Paris Review
