QUEENS by: John Millington Synge (1871-1909)
    EVEN dog-days we let pass
    Naming Queens in Glenmacnass,
All the rare and royal names
    Wormy sheepskin yet retains,
    Etain, Helen, Maeve, and Fand,
    Golden Deirdre's tender hand,
Bert, the big-foot, sung by Villon,
    Cassandra, Ronsard found in Lyon.
Queens of Sheba, Meath and Connaught,
Coifed with crown, or gaudy bonnet,
Queens whose finger once did stir men,
Queens were eaten of fleas and vermin,
Queens men drew like Monna Lisa,
Or slew with drugs in Rome and Pisa,
    We named Lucrezia Crivelli,
And Titian's lady with amber belly,
    Queens acquainted in learned sin,
    Jane of Jewry's slender shin:
Queens who cut the bogs of Glanna,
    Judith of Scripture, and Gloriana,
Queens who wasted the East by proxy,
    Or drove the ass-cart, a tinker's doxy,
Yet these are rottenI ask their pardon
And we've the sun on rock and garden,
These are rotten, so you're the Queen
Of all the living, or have been.

Please note this web page has been taken offline and we have linked to an earlier version of the site via the Way Back When Machine, an Internet archive. While the text loads, there are no longer any images for this site.
REVIEW: Synge and Inismaan appears to have been created to raise funds for the preservation of Synge's house in Inismaan. The site also gives details on Synge's life, work and the effect of illness. It lacks depth and its material is limited - at present the material is dominated by written text and fails to convey a sense of the land that inspired Synge. If the development of the house continues, then it is possible that the site will be redeveloped.

THE TINKER'S WEDDING A monologue from the play by John Millington Synge NOTE: This monologue is reprinted from The Tinker's Wedding . John Millington Synge. Boston: John Luce, 1911. MARY: [A priest is tied in a sack, wriggling and struggling about on the ground. The others bundle things together in a wild haste while old Mary tries to keep him quiet.] Be quiet, your reverence. What is it ails you, with your wrigglings now? Is it choking maybe? [She puts her hand under the sack, and feels his mouth, patting him on the back.] It's only letting on you are, holy father, for your nose is blowing back and forward as easy as an east wind on an April day. [In a soothing voice.] There now, holy father, let you stay easy, I'm telling you, and learn a little sense and patience, the way you'll not be so airy again going to rob poor sinners of their scraps of gold. [He gets quieter.]

Then he met with W.B. Yeats, who told him to go to the Aran Islands to seek inspiration. Once he followed this advice, Synge started immediately writing some of the finest drama ever written about the traditional people of Ireland, Riders to the Sea and The Well of the Saints. The decision to go to these remote islands off the western coast of Ireland was not an easy one. Synge came from a long line of Irish Protestants who had been landlords for many years in the west country. His family made their great wealth by managing their diverse parcels of land, which included dispossessing many of their less productive tenants. This caused great rancor and was one of the underlying causes of the Easter Rebellion. For Synge, a known landlord's son, to even appear in the west country was a provocation to violence. Nonetheless, he went.

His father was a barrister-at-law, and had some landed property in Galway. His mother was a fundamentalist Protestant, whose father, Rev. Robert Traill, had been rector of Schull, Co. Cork during the famine years, 1845-9. John was the youngest of a family of seven. As a child he was sickly and solitary, and, not being given to group pursuits, his younger years were spent wandering the hills of Dublin and Wicklow. "Synge's only recreation was walking, and it was to remain the one great activity of his life" (Greene, 'J. M. Synge 1871-1909')

Synge, John Millington 1871-1909, Irish poet and dramatist, b. near Dublin, of Protestant parents. He was an important figure in the Irish literary renaissance In the Shadow of the Glen (1903), a comedy, and Riders to the Sea Abbey Theatre . Two of Synge's comedies, The Well of the Saints (1905) and The Playboy of the Western World (1907), were presented by the Abbey players. The latter play created a furor of resentment among Irish patriots stung by Synge's spoof of heroic ideals and nationalism. His later works were The Tinker's Wedding, published in 1908 but not produced for fear of further riots, and Deirdre of the Sorrows, a tragedy unfinished at the time of his death but presented by the Abbey players in 1910. The Aran Islands (1907) is Synge's journal of his stay on the islands. See biographies by D. H. Greene and E. M. Stephens (1959) and Donna Gerstenberger (1964); studies by Daniel Corkery (1931, repr. 1965), Maurice Bourgeois (1913, repr. 1969), W. B. Yeats (1911, repr. 1971), Robin Skelton (1971), and M. C. King (1985).

    John Millington Synge
John Millington Synge was born in 1871 in Rathfarnham, Dublin. As a young man he studied music in Germany and later lived in Paris, where he wrote literary criticism. In Paris he met William Butler Yeats , who persuaded Synge to live in the Aran Islands before returning to Dublin. All of Synge's plays reflect his experiences in the Aran Islands. His first plays, In the Shadow of the Glen (1903), a comedy, and Riders to the Sea (1904), a tragi-comedy, were presented by the Irish National Theatre Society. In 1904 the Society, with Synge, Yeats , and Lady Gregory as co-directors, founded The Abbey Theatre. Two of Synge's comedies, The Well of the Saints (1905) and The Playboy of the Western World (1907), were presented by the Abbey Theatre. The latter caused a riot amongst Irish nationalists enraged by Synge's send-up of heroic ideals and nationalism. His later works were The Tinker's Wedding, published in 1908 but not produced, and Deirdre of the Sorrows, a tragedy unfinished at the time of his death but presented by the Abbey in 1910. The principal actress in all his plays was Maire O'Neill, who became engaged to Synge shortly before his death. Synge was also a significant poet, for which see Volume 1 (ed. Robin Skelton 1962) of J. M. Synge: Collected Works (Oxford University Press, 1962-8). He died in 1909.

He received his degree from Trinity College, Dublin, then went to Germany to study music and later to Paris, where he lived for several years working at literary criticism.
