JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE (Rathfanham 16 April 1871 - Dublin 24 March 1909) LIFE: Coming from a bourgeois family he first studies at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and at Trinity College where he degrees, then to Paris where he comes in contact with the symbolist atmosphere. He travels to France, Germany and Italy observing and meditating and coming then back to Paris where in 1897 he meets the poet William Butler Yeats . Synge shows to the poet some of his works about the French literature but Yeats finds them insufficient; but having immediately understood the great abilities and possibility of this young talent he exhorts him to leave Paris to go to live for some time in the Aran islands, off the Galway bay, in order to learn habits, traditions and language of the Gaelic people. Synge in contact with that nature of incisive beauty, near those plain and primitive folk, definitively forms his temperament of man and writer. He writes The Aran Islands, 1907 , kind of diary of his stay on the islands, and the dramas The Shadow of the Glen, 1903

John Millington Synge Born in 1871 in Ireland, John Millington Synge is one of the best known playwrights of Ireland. At the age of 19 he chose to study the violin and went abroad to Germany, Italy, and France. While in France Synge decided to alter the path of his career and became a literary critic. After a meeting with William Butler Yeats in 1891, Synge chose to travel the countryside of Ireland in search of Irish folklore. He took all that he learned from the people of Ireland and turned it into a number of plays. Most noteworthy of his plays is The Playboy of the Western World which was greeted on the stage of the Abbey Theater by an offended crowd that ended up starting a riot. Having been of ill-health for most of his life, Synge's health deteriorated rapidly until his death in 1909. RIDERS TO THE SEA A synopsis of the play by John Millington Synge This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama Purchase Plays by John Millington Synge A FTER nine days of constant grieving for her missing son, Michael, who, she feels certain, has been drowned, old Maurya has fallen into a fitful sleep. Her daughter, Cathleen, is busy with household tasks, when another daughter, Nora, slips quietly into the kitchen with a bundle given her by the young priest. It contains part of the clothes taken from the body of a drowned man far in the north. They have been sent to Maurya's cottage with a view to possible identification. As Maurya shows signs of waking the girls hide the bundle until sometime when they shall be alone. Maurya's grieving for Michael is now coupled with fear of losing Bartley, her only remaining son. Five sons and a husband she has already lost to the sea. Will that insatiable tyrant insist on taking her sixth. The priest says not. But now Bartley insists that he will cross to the mainland this very day, in spite of winds and high seas, to dispose of a horse at the fair. In a fit of pique at this only remaining son for not listening to her pleas, Maurya lets him go without her blessing. The girls persuade her to intercept him with the lunch they had forgotten to give him and so to make opportunity for that blessing a mother should have given.

John Millington Synge Synge was born near Dublin in 1871 and died in 1909. In the six years which elapsed between 1903, when In the Shadow of the Glen was produced, to 1909, when he died, he rose from absolute obscurity to world fame, and provided us with six plays on which his reputation must rest." [ Following the completion, or perhaps we should say, the beginning, of his education at Trinity College, Dublin, John Millington Synge set out to see the world. On foot he travelled through Germany, Italy and France, absorbing the very essence of them through the lives, legends and literature of their people. It was in 1899 in a Parisian attic that W.B. Yeats discovered him. With the unselfish insight that is not one of the least of Yeat's claims to distinction, he realized that here was a real genius being wasted on various kinds of literary hackwork. There he was saved for his native ireland by William Butler Yeats in 1899 and persuaded that he must write about his own land. He went off on a second trip to the isolated Aran Islands, where he studied the local dialects, characters, and folklore. He began to write plays of peasant life, employing the natural speech which he had learned. His first play, In the Shadow of the Glen , was performed in 1903 by the Irish National Theatre, of which Yeats and Lady Gregory were co-founders. In 1904, Synge's brief peasant tragedy, Riders to the Sea , was staged at this company's new home, the Abbey Theatre, and Synge became the Abbey's literary adviser. Other folk plays followed, including his comedy about a mock-hero, The Playboy of the Western World (1907), which caused patriots to riot at the theatre. Synge died in 1909.

Similarly, by my own research and claims of Synge, my intent was, and perhaps impetuously still is, to consider an artist whose work once rather violently fragmented an audience, and argue that, years later, his work has become a nexus for a nation. Seem alchemy? Proving so would necessitate my own enchantments, and even arguing for such an immodest assertion would exhaust many paper mills or fill entire gigabytes of virtual space. Accordingly, then, for this paper, my claims are restrained, and my argument modest even , perhaps, straightforward and logical.
