HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Swinburne, Algernon Charles English poet. He attracted attention with the choruses of his Greek-style tragedy Atalanta in Calydon (1865), but he and Rossetti were attacked in 1871 as leaders of the fleshly school of poetry, and the revolutionary politics of Songs before Sunrise (1871) alienated others. His verse is notable for its emotion and opulent language.

The Compaint of Lisa by Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837 - 1909) There is no woman living who draws breath
So sad as I, though all things sadden her.
There is not one upon life's weariest way
Who is weary as I am weary of all but death.
Toward whom I look as looks the sunflower
All day with all his whole soul toward the sun;
While in the sun's sight I make moan all day,
And all night on my sleepless maiden bed.
Weep and call out on death, O Love, and thee,
That thou or he would take me to the dead.
And know not what thing evil I have done
That life should lay such heavy hand on me.
Alas! Love, what is this thou wouldst with me?
What honor shalt thou have to quench my breath,
Or what shall my heart broken profit thee?
O Love, O great god Love, what have I done

Hymn to Proserpine
by Algernon Charles Swinburne (AFTER THE PROCLAMATION IN ROME OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH) I have lived long enough, having seen one thing, that love hath an end;
Goddess and maiden and queen, be near me now and befriend.
Thou art more than the day or the morrow, the seasons that laugh or that weep;
For these give joy and sorrow; but thou, Proserpina, sleep.
Sweet is the treading of wine, and sweet the feet of the dove;
But a goodlier gift is thine than foam of the grapes or love.
Yea, is not even Apollo, with hair and harpstring of gold,
A bitter God to follow, a beautiful God to behold?
I am sick of singing: the bays burn deep and chafe: I am fain
To rest a little from praise and grievous pleasure and pain. For the Gods we know not of, who give us our daily breath, We know they are cruel as love or life, and lovely as death. O Gods dethroned and deceased, cast forth, wiped out in a day! From your wrath is the world released, redeemed from your chains, men say. New Gods are crowned in the city; their flowers have broken your rods; They are merciful, clothed with pity, the young compassionate Gods.

From Lesbia Brandon By Algernon Charles Swinburne (from Chapter 16, Lecadia (1)) "Well?" said Herbert as she paused: her voice had filled him with subtle dim emotions, and he was absorbed at once by the strange sound and sense of the words.
  • (1) Refers to Sapho’s death upon the isle of Lecadia. (2) Most poppies are extreamly poisonous (including several kinds of red poppies). The opium poppy (also poisonous) is white. (3) Sicily was where Proserpine was abducted by Hades, according to myth.
      (4) Aconites are also called Monkshood. (has blue and purple flowers) It is extreamly poinsonous, and one of the most dangerous plants in the world. Monkshood (and other plants in its family such as henbane, foxglove, etc.) is a plant of the dead in classical Grecian mythology.

    Algernon Charles Swinburne Study Questions
    (Page numbers are Norton Anthology II, Sixth Edition) "Hymn to Proserpine," 1514
    DATE: 1866 (The usefulness of these questions may be somewhat limited by the quality of Swinburne noted in our Introduction: “Those who demand that poetry should make sense, first and foremost, may find that much of his poetry is not to their taste.”) Footnote number 1 on p. 1514 is crucial to understanding this poem, and you may want to go ahead and read footnote number 1 on p. 1517 as well, as it sheds further light. Line 1 ff. Why does the speaker appeal to Proserpine, in preference to (e.g.) Apollo? 13 ff. Who are the “deceased gods” and who are the “new gods”? 30 ff. What philosophy does the speaker assert in opposition to Christianity? Compare to Tennyson’s Lotos-eaters. 47 ff. What does the sea seem to symbolize in this verse paragraph? 75 ff. How is Mary compared to Aphrodite? What is Aphrodite’s special strength or value? 91 “she shall surely abide in the end”—Why? 94 “I am also, I also, thy brother”—Why?

    Algernon Charles Swinburne, Laus Veneris, London, 1869:
    BEFORE THE MIRROR. (VERSES WRITTEN UNDER A PICTURE) INSCRIBED TO J. A. WHISTLER. I. White rose in red rose-garden
    Is not so white ;
    Snowdrops that plead for pardon,
    And pine for fright
    Because the hard East blows
    Over their maiden rows,
    Grow not as this face grows from pale to bright. Behind the veil, forbidden,
    Shut up from Sight,
    Love, is there sorrow hidden,
    Is there delight?
    Is joy thy dower or grief, White rose of weary leaf, Late rose whose life is brief, whose loves are light? Soft snows that hard winds harden Till each flake bite Fill all the flowerless garden Whose flowers took flight Long since when summer Ceased, And men rose up from feast, And warm west wind grew east, and warm day, night. II. " Come, snow, come, wind or thunder High up in air, I watch my face, and wonder At my bright hair ; Naught else exalts or grieves The rose at heart, that heaves With love of her own leaves and lips that pair. " She knows not loves that kissed her She knows not where.
