Gaius Suetonius Tranquilla was a Roman historian (AD 117-138) under Hadrian (AD 76-138). He was also the secretary of state and authored a book entitled Life of Claudius "Because the Jews at Rome caused constant disturbances at the instigation of Chrestus [Christ], he [Claudius] expelled them from the city [Rome]." Life of Claudius
"Nero inflicted punishment on the Christians, a sect given to a new and mischievous religious belief." Life of Claudius This reference reveals several key things: 1) Christians held to new beliefs.
    2) Christians followed Christ.
    3) Christians were punished and banished from Rome.

When you mention the emperor Claudius, the first picture that comes to
many minds is the character in the television series I, Claudius, so
brilliantly played by Sir Derek Jacobi: the stumbling, rather foolish
man who was the pawn of his wives and freedmen. That this picture is derived for the most part from Suetonius' account of the life of Claudius comes through in Donna Hurley's commentary, but she also goes a long way in correcting some of the misinterpretations that have been perpetuated about this princeps.

    Caius Suetonius Tranquillus

On Teachers of Grammar and Rhetoric
tr. Robert A. Kaster (1995) Excerpts Adam Kissel (4.4) The early grammarians used to teach rhetoric also, and there are in circulation treatises by many of them on both skills. (4.5) Following this custom, I believe, the teachers who came laterthough the professions were already distinctnone the less maintained or introduced on their own certain kinds of exercises designed to pave the way to eloquencefor example, set themes, paraphrases, addresses, statements of cause, and other things of this sortso that their pupils' speech would not be altogether unadorned and dry when they were handed over to the teachers of rhetoric. (4.6) I see that nowadays these things are left out of the curriculum through the sloth and inarticulateness of certain teachersfor I should not think that disdain could be the cause. (17.1) Marcus Verrius Flaccus, a freedman, gained fame especially from the character of his teaching: for he made a general practice of pitting students of similar ages and attainments against one another in competition [cf. Comenius ], to give their talents a workout, and would propose not only the subject for their compositions but also a prize for the winnertypically, some old book that was attractive or rare.

Virgil by Suetonius The following extract was taken from 'Rome The Augustan Age' by Chisolm and Ferguson, Oxford University Press 1981. A number of Lives of Virgil were written in Antiquity, of which the best known, most extensive and most reliable is that found in the introduction to a commentry on Virgil's Bucolics (Eclogues) and Georgics by the 4th century AD grammarian Aelius Donatus. It is very probably taken from a work by Suetonius, On Famous Men, which dealt with a number of poets, including Horace. As the secretary (ab epistulus) to the Emperor Hadrian (AD 117-38), Suetonius would have had access to Augustus's private correspondence and other evidence. Portrait of Vergil, 6th Eclogue

    Biography
  • Publius Vergilius Maro, a native of Mantua, had parents of humble origin, especially his father, who according to some was a potter, although the general opinion is that he was at first the hired man of a certain Magus, an attendant on the magistrates, later became his son in law because of his dilligence, and greatly increased his little property by buying up woodlands and raising bees. He was born in the first consulship of Gnaeus Pompeius the Great and Marcus Licinius Crasus, on the ides of October, in a district called Andes, not far distant from Mantua.
