Stoker, Bram
8 November 1847 - 20 April 1912
Irish-born writer, theater critic, and manager for the famed late-C19 actor Henry Irving, Stoker is of course best known as the author of Dracula , the definitive vampire story. Stoker wrote a number of other novels and short stories, several of which ( The Jewel of Seven Stars and Lair of the White Worm , to mention just a couple of the novels) also have major supernaturalist elements.

Yet the best known vampire of all is a person who used to belong to real history instead of myth. The name most associated with vampires is "Dracula", nickname given to Vlad Tepes a.k.a. Vlad the Impaler, 15th Century Vallachian prince who ruled his lands with the methods that would turn Hitler into nice guy in comparison. Four centuries later, Irish writer Abraham Stoker resurrected Tepes as the protagonist of his gothic horror novel. The novel and its protagonists were extensively used by the horror filmmakers in the next century, but among multitudes of such films only few tried to be faithful to the source material. One of them was BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, 1992 film directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

Note that the ascii edition contained a number of what I believe to be formatting errors. I have "corrected" some of these, but left the majority intact. I have, however, endeavored not to introduce any new errors into the text. In case of doubt, you may always compare against the original etext This document is part of a small, but growing collection of html formatted etexts. Love Never Dies My favorite Gary Oldman film is "Bram Stokers Dracula" directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Oldman's Dracula is not only fightening. The actor is able to bring an element of pathos to this historically evil character. With the aid of excellent make-up and costumes, Oldman adds his own uncanny knack for accents to create a living (as well as "un-living") "Prince Vlad" - Dracula.
    A Scarlet Letter
As sexy as Oldman was as Dracula, his portrayal as the Reverend Dimmesdale is so stirring it makes me ache.
Torn between his love for a married woman and his morality, the Reverend eventually succumbs to his desire.
As his lips part to kiss his forbidden love you can almost feel his breath.
    THE FIFTH ELEMENT
Although Zorg is not Oldman's sexiest character,he is certainly one of his most creative.
Jean Baptiste Emmauel Zorg is the villain you most love to hate (and laugh hardest at!)!

    Biography of Bram Stoker (1847-1912)
Writer of one of the world's most famous horror novels, Abraham Stoker was born to the loosely defined socio-cultural group known as the Anglo-Irish. A Protestant Dubliner, he was the son of a civil servant, and he was expected to follow in his father's footsteps. As a child, Abraham Stoker was a sickly child often on the point of death‹by his own account, he never stood upright without aid until he was seven years old. But he grew into a physically robust youth, excelling in athletics during his college years. At Trinity College, he studied mathematics and became president of the Philosophical Society and the Historical Society. The many years with Henry Irving were full of hard work and sacrifice, as Stoker frequently put his work before his family. His only child, Noel, was born in 1879. Noel later felt that Stoker's work for Irving wore out the devoted younger man. There was constant touring and promotional work to be done, throughout the British Isles and as far away as North America. It was during these years that Stoker wrote his greatest novel, Dracula (1897). In 1905, Irving collapsed and died while on tour in Sheffield. Stoker was so profoundly affected by the death of his friend and hero that he suffered a stroke. After Irving's death, Stoker continued to write fiction and do newspaper work until his own death in 1912.

In 1922, F.W. Murnau made a ground-breaking movie that still haunts us today. Casting Max Schreck as the terrifying Count Orlock, Murnau's "Nosferatu," with its shadows and images, still defines the horror film genre. No movie since portrays Bram Stoker's "Dracula" any better.
