His father Thomas belonged to a family of engineers who had built many of the deep-sea lighthouses around the rocky coast of Scotland. His mother, Margaret Isabella Balfour, came from a family of lawyers and church ministers. In 1857 the family moved to 17 Heriot Row, a solid respectable house in Edinburgh’s New Town. At the age of seventeen he enrolled at Edinburgh University to study engineering, with the aim - his father hoped - of following him in the family firm. However, he abandoned this course of studies and made the compromise of studying law. He 'passed advocate' in 1875 but did not practice since by now he knew he wanted to be a writer. In the university’s summer vacations he went to France to be in the company of other young artists, both writers and painters. His first published work was an essay called ‘Roads’, and his first published volumes were works of travel writing. EARLY PUBLISHED WORKS: His first published volume

Robert Louis Stevenson
Robert Louis Stevenson was at the height of his powers when he died suddenly in Samoa in 1894. For a long period he was thought of mainly as the writer of adventure stories for children, but now there is growing recognition of his subtle and surprisingly modern explorations of dilemmas of character and action. Stevenson grew up in Edinburgh, and this profoundly shaped his writing. He was born on 13th November 1850 and from earliest childhood he was frequently ill, which influenced a fertile imagination. It was assumed that Stevenson would follow the profession of his father, Thomas Stevenson , a distinguished lighthouse and harbour engineer, and he studied engineering at Edinburgh University. However, in his twenty-first year he announced his intention of becoming a writer. He began with essays and travel writing and within a few years was recognised as a writer of great promise. His first commercially published book, An Inland voyage , (1878) described a canoe trip in Belgium and France. He followed this in 1879 with Edinburgh, picturesque notes

As from the house your mother sees
You playing round the garden trees,
So you may see, if you will look
Through the windows of this book,
Another child, far, far away,
And in another garden, play.
But do not think you can at all,
By knocking on the window, call That child to hear you. He intent Is all on his play-business bent. He does not hear, he will not look, Nor yet be lured out of this book. For, long ago, the truth to say, He has grown up and gone away, And it is but a child of air That lingers in the garden there. Robert Louis Stevenson
A review by Bradford Torrey
S "All through my boyhood and youth," he says, "I was known and pointed out for the pattern of an idler; and yet I was always busy on my own private end, which was to learn to write. I kept always two books in my pocket, one to read, one to write in. As I walked, my mind was busy fitting what I saw with appropriate words; when I sat by the roadside, I would either read, or a pencil and a penny version-book would be in my hand, to note down the features of the scene or commemorate some halting stanzas." Discuss this article in
See an index of Classic Reviews from The Atlantic Monthly.
So he "lived with words." And the point of the confession is that these "childish tasks," as he calls them in another place, were done "consciously for practice." "I had vowed that I would learn to write. That was a proficiency that tempted me; and I practiced to acquire it, as men learn to whittle, in a wager with myself." Such a course would never give him originality; but no matter. For the present it was not originality he was seeking; he was not yet writing books: he was learning his trade. Whether, having learned it, he should turn out to have original genius to go with his knowledge and put it to use, was a question that the event alone could determine. Originality is a gift of the gods; it is born with a man, or it is not born with him. The technique of a prose style, on the other hand, could be learned, and Stevenson's present business was to learn it, in the only way of which he had any knowledge, the way in which his masters themselves had learned it,practice based on imitation.

Biography of Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94)
In order to fully understand the world in which Stevenson was raised, it is necessary to understand that there were two Edinburghs, both which played a part in molding his personality and outlook. On one hand was New Town, respectable, conventional, deeply religious, and polite. On the other was a much more bohemian Edinburgh, symbolized by brothels and shadiness. The juxtaposition of the two aspects in contrast to each other made a deep impression and strengthened his fascination with the duality of human nature, later providing the theme for The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In the autumn of 1873, Stevenson was taken ill with nervous exhaustion and a severe chest condition, consequently, his doctor ordered him to take an extended rest abroad. For the next six months, he convalesced in the South of France, working on essays. On his return to Edinburgh, he spent much of his time writing book reviews and articles and experimenting with short stories. Slowly but surely, he earned a name for himself in journalism and his pieces began appearing in distinguished journals such as The Fortnightly Review. At this time, he met an American married woman, Fanny Vandergrift Osbourne, ten years his senior, whom was in Europe trying to escape her estranged husband's influence. For three years, Stevenson (still in ill health) continued his relationship with her and eventually followed her to San Francisco, where she obtained a divorce from her husband and married Stevenson in May 1880.

On The Spot RECONSTRUCTING LOUIS John Sessions In Reconstructing Louis John Sessions brings to vivid life a man by turns reckless, romantic and ruthless. Cutting through the popular myths of Robert Louis Stevenson as a romantic consumptive and drawing on over twenty biographies of the writer, Sessions has written, and plays, a complex man from his early life as a budding religious zealot to his death from a brain haemorrhage in Samoa at the age of 44. Julie Batty talked to John Sessions about Robert Louis Stevenson, writing for radio and the ambitions of a man once described as ‘almost as good as he thinks he is’. I first met John Sessions at a birthday party for one of his numerous god-children, in East Dulwich in 1991. He was leaning against the sink in the kitchen, brandishing a glass of red wine like a stately orb and a cigarette like a jester’s jingly stick while he entertained a group of grinning onlookers. He was best known then for being one of the first performers on

"The bottle imp" (1893)
by Robert Louis Stevenson
The following is a Gaslight etext.... A message to you about There was a man of the Island of Hawaii, whom I shall call Keawe; for the truth is, he still lives, and his name must be kept secret; but the place of his birth was not far from Honaunau, where the bones of Keawe the Great lie hidden in a cave. This man was poor, brave, and active; he could read and write like a schoolmaster; he was a first-rate mariner besides, sailed for some time in the island steamers, and steered a whaleboat on the Hamakua coast. At length it came in Keawe's mind to have a sight of the great world and foreign cities, and he shipped on a vessel bound to San Francisco. All of a sudden, the man smiled and nodded, and beckoned Keawe to enter, and met him at the door of the house. "This is a fine house of mine," said the man, and bitterly sighed. "Would you not care to view the chambers?" So he led Keawe all over it, from the cellar to the roof, and there was nothing there that was not perfect of its kind, and Keawe was astonished.

The following is a Gaslight etext.... A message to you about
THE BODY-SNATCHER
BODY SNATCHER was written in June, 1881, at Kinnaird Cottage, Pitlochry, and was originally intended to form one of a series of tales of terror, or, as Stevenson called them, "crawlers," which had been planned in collaboration with Mrs. Stevenson, and were to be brought out under the title of THE BLACK MAN AND OTHER TALES. Of these stories THRAWN JANET and THE MERRY MEN were published in The Cornhill Magazine , but THE BODY SNATCHER was "laid aside in a justifiable disgust, the tale being horrid." Subsequently in 1884 being asked to contribute a story to The Pall Mall Christmas number, he offered MARKHEIM, but as it fell short of the space reserved for it, Stevenson sent THE BODY SNATCHER , which, in a letter to the editor, he describes as "blood-curdling enoughand ugly enoughto chill the blood of a grenadier." Unique and gruesome methods of advertising were used by The Pall Mall , and much attention was drawn to the story. In London, posters were displayed of so ghoulish and startling a character that they were suppressed by the police.
